Right, if I understand your meaning we use 2nd ed. rules and setup, just when I host I have the 2nd ed Europe board with 1st edition Pacific, so the IPC tracker doesn’t go all the way across the top. (I eventually asked for and received AAA sculpts for ANZAC and Japan from WoC). For example, this is what we use for Pacific http://www.axisandallies.org/resources-downloads/setup-chart-for-axis-allies-pacific-1940-second-edition/ with the addition of the 18 Russian infantry and 2 AAA in Siberia. So Japan should be getting all its planes. Any rules I use the rulebook first then come here if I have questions. Never played online. Does that change the dynamics at all? I would assume it takes some luck out of it.

RE: USA play for Advanced players (help)
Slacking? Maybe. We certainly don’t author pages of moves in notation. But I don’t think so, I play with (and have taught) a few people, intellectual types, chess players almost all of them, who are good at this sort of thing. This game is really not that complicated mechanics/strategy-wise, it’s just big - but I like that, the idea that what you do on one side of the planet affects the other. I know my explanation was probably simplistic to many of you, but I was just reporting the success I’ve had playing as the US and watching. I’m mostly here for rules clarifications :)

Although when i host it it’s with the 1st ed. Pac board. Don’t think it matters much though, except you can take Yukon.

RE: USA play for Advanced players (help)
I don’t seem to have the same problems and haven’t ever felt the need to incorporate bids, OOB is how I have always played, and the Allies have an excellent record against the Axis, and it’s all due to the US.
US strategy is entirely dependent on how the Axis goes about starting the war,but generally speaking I focus more on Europe since I find it’s easier to defend the victory cities in Asia. But if Japan goes after Hawaii early I’ll go straight Pacific to defend Western US and Australia. The silver lining in that is it leaves UK Pacific with the ability to claim money islands and send units as necessary to the Middle East/Africa or possibly up to help Russia in the Caucasus region. If Japan doesn’t attack Hawaii I’ll slowly build a giant navy there anyways, eventually you’ll be able to outspend the Japanese even while fighting in Europe, and go in for the kill, claim that seazone around Japan (6 is it?) and then Japan’s done. You have to be disciplined to keep units in Hawaii longterm and resist the temptation to have adventures around the money islands except for a couple planes and the occasion sub or transport.
My Europe strategy depends on how bad the Axis player wants Gibraltar. If he starts parking German planes there I’ll build UK units in Canada and fighter units to scramble in London, send US navy up to Canada with several transports and then park everyone off Ireland/London in anticipation of hitting Normandy/Holland, assuming you have enough naval units to survive an attack by the German navy/air force. Then I hit Normandy with everything and stay there, funnelling in land units, play D with Russia and eventually tear the Axis in half. If the Axis leaves Gibraltar open, then you can park there with enough force to survive Axis attacks, then of course hit the “soft underbelly” of Italy, or Normandy, Denmark, or wherever he’s weak. Just keep the navy together. It’s probably pretty obvious that you won’t win Europe if the German navy is strong enough to claim the English Channel and environs for the duration of the game.
It’s hard to win with the Axis against a good allied player, reason being it’s hard to effectively allocate resources between the Russian war and naval/air units needed to keep the British/Americans at bay. When I was in the service I overheard a British soldier say “If you have all the gear and no idea you must be an American.” You can’t be that guy - the US greatest advantage is its income (Bonuses). Spend it wisely, and give everyone a job.

Carrier Repair Question
When a carrier is repaired at a naval base, can any adjacent fighters/tacs automatically “hop on” without using up a movement point? Ie, can they start their combat movement from the carrier, not the land territory, kind of like when you place newly purchased fighters on a carrier adjacent to a territory with a complex. Thanks

RE: Amphibious Assault - Sub Question
Right - should have made that clear. The Russian sub hit on it’s surprise attack removing the cruiser from battle before it had fired a shot. Had he survived I understand I would have been obligated (indeed it would have been to my benefit) to roll the cruiser and fighters separately.

Amphibious Assault - Sub Question
I am Germany and want to do an amphibious assault against the Russian sub and cruiser in the Baltic Sea, hitting Leningrad/Novgorod. I take a transport, cruiser and a couple fighters and he does not submerge; the planes take out the cruiser but the sub, doggone it, hits a “1”, meaning I have to apply that hit to the cruiser cause subs can’t hit planes. So now it’s planes/transport against sub - and now I can’t unload because my planes cannot hit the sub but the sub can (and if I don’t retreat, eventually will) hit the transport. Is this correct - and retreating is, all things being equal, my only option? Thanks

RE: Blitzing into a neutral
Thanks. In this situation there was one tank that survived the initial Battle of Egypt. Had there been say an infantry we could have taken over Trans-Jordan with him and moved the tank into Iraq on non-combat. Seems kind of funny though now that I think about it - a tank can blitz into Trans-Jordan and back to Egypt (the move back would seem rather non-combat-ish) but not from Trans-Jordan into a friendly neutral. Weird rules thing, I guess

RE: Blitzing into a neutral
Thanks. Was thinking it wasn’t legal, as the rules for non-combat state that the unit must not have moved during the combat phase, and activating a friendly neutral can only be done on non-combat.

Blitzing into a neutral
Can a tank “blitz” through a territory into an unactivated friendly neutral? For example, can an Italian tank in Egypt blitz through unoccupied Trans-Jordan on combat move and then into pro-Axis Iraq to activate the infantry there on non-combat?
Thanks

RE: Japan's NO
Thanks.
Yes in this game I played the Allies a little differently - Soviets Turn 1 stacked the 18 INF in Amur, which drew the predicted response of an attack and Mongolian activation. To kill the 18 INF, Japan used the planes it would normally use to go after the Chinese (was hoping to kill a few planes with the AAA-none hit of course, and send the Mongolians south to help China).
So Japan had fewer planes to hit southern China/stack in Kwangsi, and left 2 fighters, 2 tacs and an SBR in Kwangsi. I took the UK Kwangtung INF, an INF and ART from India by transport, battleship support shot and my three UK Pacific planes after them (I killed the planes, only lost the ground units, moved the planes back to defend Yunnan).
The maneuver caught Japan a little off guard, at this point he’s taken over most of Siberia (I find Russia can handle that loss of income if it maintains its bonus and gets a European axis territory once in awhile), China is holding the Burma Road and his Japanese transports, having gone to Amur, were out of position to nail the money islands early on. We’ll see how it goes, but generally speaking I have no qualms about attacking Japan with UK if Japan leaves its planes/boats vulnerable.

Japan's NO
One of Japan’s national objectives states: when Japan is not at war with the US, has not made an unprovoked declaration of war against UK/ANZAC, and has not attacked French Indo-China, it receives a bonus of 10 IPCs.
If UK/ANZAC attacks Japan first, that doesn’t bring the US into war and as such Japan would still receive that bonus if it doesn’t attack the US, right? In the current game, Japan attacked only USSR and China turn 1. Then UK attacks Japan on its first turn. Turn 2 Japan, Japan counterattacks UK but still leaves the US alone, and hasn’t yet taken over Indo-China. So, the US is still out of the war (hasn’t been attacked by Germany/Italy on that side yet), and Japan receives the bonus, even though it is at war with UK/ANZAC. Is this correct?
Thanks

RE: Convey zone question!
It hits both…roll once at the end of germany’s then again at the end of italy’s

Planes vs. Sub
If I take a battleship and strategic bomber against an enemy cruiser and sub, and my opponent does not submerge, how does combat proceed? Do I roll the battleship and bomber at the same time or separately? Meaning, if I roll at the same time and get one hit, he chooses to lose the sub or cruiser (since bombers can’t hit subs)? Or, do I roll separately, and if the bomber hits he MUST lose the cruiser?

Scrambling against an amphibious assault
The US has defeated the Japanese navy and two wounded battleships are all that’s left in the seazone around Japan. Japan buys a fighter on its turn and it’s the US turn again. I understand if I leave those battleships there and bring a transport in from Hawaii to try to take the island Japan can scramble that fighter, ensuring I can’t bombard and more than likely taking out one of those battleships, correct?
If I don’t bring in the transport, and just leave those battleships there, the fighter can still scramble against them on the US turn even though they haven’t technically made a combat move, correct?
Finally, let’s say ANZAC brings up a transport to try to take over Japan. If Japan scrambles the fighter, does it do so against the ANZAC transport only (which would kill it barring a 5 or 6 allowing the transport to retreat) or can the US battleships protect it and engage the fighter?
Thanks
