It may be more realistic, but strategic bombing is not very powerful as it is…

Critique this Russian first move…
I tried this play recently and it worked pretty well and I won the game. But it may have been due to other factors and not what I did here with Russia. So tell me what you think…
Buy 8 inf.
Combat move:
- Everything from Russia, Arch, and Caucus into W.Rus.Â
- 2 inf and fig from Karelia into W.Rus.
This allows you to take W.Rus with 4 arm, 2 art, and about 8-10 inf.
Non-Combat:
- figs to Russia
- all other infantry moves east towards Sink or Bury
- AA from Caucus to W.Rus
Unit Placement
- 1 inf in Caucus
- 7 inf in Russia
So this is obviously a bit of a gambit in that you are giving up Caucus to Germany. But the thing is, he can’t do much damage in terms of killing troops because there is no way for him to attack your big stack. The most he can put into Caucus is 3 inf, 3 arm and 1 art which could easily be destroyed and would be an obvious mistake in my opinion. So I think Germany probably just takes Caucus with 2inf + planes. But then this takes planes away from other crucial G1 battles like Egypt or the UK battleship. So mabye Germany takes it with 3inf? or 2 inf and 1 arm? But the thing is, anything Germany puts into Caucus is destroyed next turn.
If Germany does take Caucus with minimal troops, then you can easily take it back with your 7 inf from Russia, leaving your big stack to attack any juicy targets that may be available. W.Rus can attack Karelia, Ukraine, or belo if there is a juicy target in any of these areas. So it could prevent Germany from placing tanks or figs in any of these territories and create a nice buffer. And if not, then you can always just move everything to Caucus on turn 2 and have 4 arm, 2 art, and 15-18 inf to hold it with.
Also, this strat sends plenty of troops east to block Japan for as long as possible.
Anyways, what do think of this? Where are the flaws? What would you as Germany in response to this? Also, I’m sure someone has thought of this before, so mabye there is a thread already dealing with it?

RE: Philippine Islands
And it is closer to Japan and thus easier for Japan to take back.

RE: A few questions from a new player
1. Can a plane in a coastal area such as england defend in the seas connected to it?
No. Only the zone it is in. The only way for planes to defend in naval battles is if they are fighters on a carrier/
2. can submarines submerge after their combat phase
Yes.
3. Do planes attacking on a coastal area like an island such as midway conduct both land and sea assaults
No. The Planes can either be part of a land attack or a naval attack, not both.
4. Does a ship in a coastal area defend the land or island next to it on an amphibious assault.
No. But remember that if you attempting an amphibious assault, you must first clear the sea zone you are landing from from any enemy ships. So in this way, they can prevent an amphibious assault. For example, suppose you are attacking Germany with an amphibious assault and he has a destroyer in the Baltic Sea. You must first sink his destroyer and then you can assault Germany with any transports that remain. But if he manages to destroy the invading fleet with his destroyer the assault is defeated. On the other hand if you are assaulting a island like Britain with multiple bordering sea zones, you can conduct your assault without worrying about a fleet that is on the other side of the island in a different sea zone from the one you are assaulting from.

Australia IC
Has anyone ever looked into this? Is there way to make a T1 IC in Australia profitable?
I don’t really see how, but I have heard some reference on this site to a australia IC strategy.

Rules help needed…
I am pretty sure I am right about this rule, but a dispute arose in my last game and we don’t have the rulebook that came with the game…
Anyways what I am asking is this. Can you attack a sea zone occupied by an enemy fleet, wipe out the fleet completely, and then move through that seazone with a second fleet in your non-combat move?
I think you can, but I don’t have the rulebook and I don’t know what rules this would be. Does anyone know?

150 IPCs - Built the best fleet possible…
Ok, so what are your thoughts on the best fleet that can be bought for 150 IPCs. It should take into account attack power, defence power, versatility, etc. but NOT transports. Obviously the amount of transports needed depends mostly on the land situaiton. So assume that you get 4 transports to start, and you build around that. Also, since every country has at least 2 fighters, assume that the first 2 fighters are free. It would be interesting to see who can come up with the most effective build. Both in terms of winning percentage, and in terms of versatility.
My initial thoughts would be:
4 transports - FREE
1 carrier - 16 IPC
2 planes - FREE
5 destroyers - 60 IPC
9 subs - 72 IPC
TOTAL - 148 IPC -
Critique this US strategy
Does anyone think it is possible to set up an effective strategy for shuttling US troops into Asia from Western Canada, while forgoing any US troops into Europe? I have tried this in several games now and have had mixed results. Has anyone else tried this, or is such a stretegy impossible to pull off?

Sitting positions for 5 man game…
So when you play a five man game, where does each country typically sit relativew to the board?

RE: How do you respond as UK to this german first turn?
Well the 5 transports carries a much greater risk of a land invasion, which if succesful is obviously far more devastating for the uk then losing its navy. But you’re right, the planes can kill and then you can reunite during non-combat. Is there a way to prevent this?
-
How do you respond as UK to this german first turn?
Ok, so suppose Germany uses the bid to buy a tranny in baltic. His first buy is a carrier and two trannies. He places them all in the baltic and lands two planes there as well. He moves his med fleet west to attack the uk battleship (taking gibraltar). He places 5 inf and 5 tanks in western Europe and moves the rest of his ground troops towards russia. He makes the attack in Egypt with just the tank, inf, bomber, and two figs.
So he is threatening a united german fleet off W. Europe with
1 battleship
1 destroyer
3 subs
5 transports
1 carrier
2 fightersPlus 5 inf and 5 tanks in Western that could invade uk or north america.
So how do you respond to this as the allies?
I encourted this in a recent game and to me the best move seemed to be sacrificing a US tranny off the coast of Spain to prevent uniting the fleet and drawing the weaker southern fleet within range of uk planes and the uk battleship. But then what if Germany doesn’t take the bait and simply moves the baltic fleet to west europe, threatening a later unification of the fleet. How do you respond? Is there any way to minimize the effectiveness of this fleet?

RE: Tech
People use the word tech and weapons development interchangably. In older versions it was called technology rolls. In revised it is called weapons development. But the two are the same.
-
What is your first buy as UK (assuming baltic carrier)
Assuming that Germany has a opening buy of a carrier in the baltic (and lands two fighters there) with the rest of his initial IPCs being used for ground troops, what is your first buy as UK?
-
How many ships do purchase as Germany in a typical game?
I know most people like to buy at least a carrier on turn one, or possibly 2 transports. But how many total ships do you buy in a typical game as Germany in say the first 5-6 turns?
-
RE: IMPORTANT QUESTION!! READ HERE!!!
You can skip the extra AA by going through the two sea zones
-
RE: How much in-game strategy conversation do you tolerate?
Whenever we play there is a LOT of strategy discussion. As long as everyone is having a good time who cares…
-
RE: East or west?
I usually send it east to destroy the uk ship and allow a landing in Egypt. Many people like to place their bid in Africa and send the battleship west in order to unite the German fleet on G2.
I’ll just throw this out there, but I don’t think uniting the fleet on G2 is that important. Usually the northern German fleet can survive till G3 without uniting.

RE: How would you deal with this Russian Navy?
if my opponent makes that purchase in r 1 i start planning my victory speech :-D
That’s exactly what I thought, and it came true. Obviously this was a terrible strat for Russia, I just wanted to see how others would handle it.

2nd turn attack on U.K. - How do you counter this?
Suppose the German player buys a carrier and three transports on G1 and places them all with its northern fleet. After making its usual attacks Germany leaves 4 tanks and 4 inf. in Germany. It leaves 4 fighters in Western Europe and two on the carrier. It seem that a 2nd turn attack on UK is coming. What do you do as the allies to counter this? You only have one UK turn and one US turn (and one Russian turn but I don’t know what you could do with it). So, what is your response to this as the allies?
