I dont know about having bother trucks and half tracks, sounds like much of a muchness to me.
Half tracks and self propelled artillery would be much cooler. Just my 2 cents.

Wow, my compliments on another solid paint job that makes me envious!
BTW what did you use for the stars on the ships? Looks like a decal of some sort.
My local model store has loads of stuff for flames of war, so i grabbed a transfer set. You can also see some of the cyrillic script on the russian tanks as well.
Annoyingly, flames of war doesnt do Japanese models so ill be winging the paint scheme a bit.
The Soviets Are here!
Will be painting the Japanese next

New Zealand
I had to tick “elsewhere asia” even though we are in Oceania
Im keen on a pre order.
Mainly just to paint them, after 3 weeks or so im 1/3 of the way through painting my AA50 set. So hurry up already ;)
ANZAC? ANZAC! ANZAC!!!
Explodes!!!
Color is supposed to match the battledice, but even if a bit different I think they could still suffice to work with current pieces. Some Paintskreig could always fix your ills. And since they’d have to be at least re-sculpted designs of the original units they could function as extensions of unit types from the original or stand-alones that simply replace all the originals.
Neato, someone using the term “Paintkrieg”. I wonder if i can claim coinage of that ;)
Anywho, as long as the model quality is good i will buy, I would prefer new units, but the colour wont phase me as I will paint them.
I can see how people would want the new plastics as close as possible to the originals though
Germans are finished! 8-)
Well, almost. I am planning on getting some flock to do the bases for the German infantry, but that will be way later
Updated pictures include the entire fleet painted and some quick snaps of the Germans in their 1941 start up positions with all units on the board.

I have started the Russian infantry and will post those when I am done.
I agree 100% with IL
New units, give us some variety.
I would love a hurricane, typhoon or mosquito for the UK fighter, so it can go along with the spitfires fro AA50.
Even dive bombers for the fighter pieces would be neat.
Variety is the spice of live after all!
Just out of intrest, did you consider dry brushing?.
Also Flames of war models paint up and fit very nicley on the discs, ive tried the dry brush over basic national coulours and a more detailed approach and don’t know which way to go as i kinda like both!!.
I normally do a bit of drybrushing on models, but i fnd the AA50 models too small to really utilize that technique. I did drybrush the metal parts on the German artillery (88flak) however. I tend only to drybrush metal.
What I do instead is a lot of inking. Taking black (or a darker shade of the original colour if black is overkill) and the original shade, mixing them and then applying a lot of water. You then coat the model in the watered blackish mess over the original paint. It falls into all the cracks and once dried, you paint the higher areas of the model again and is creates a nice layered effect. When I post pictures of the fleet you should see that a bit better.
The key to painting, i think at least is practice. Start simple and build up. Be prepared to paint lots of crappy models, you should see my original blood bowl team from when I was 13!
I learned a lot from various friends who paint in a whole league above me (One friend even has a couple of games workshop golden demon placings) . I sat with them and painted horribly for years and they gave me advice and guidance. Slowly, and surely I got better. I’m not a fantastic painter, but i’m not horrible either.
Excellent job! Love the planes.
I need to do a picture of the underside of the planes as I painted them a very light blue and the contrast between top and bottom is quite nice.
I’d skip painting seldom used units (Russian naval vessels and Italian bmb come to mind.
I thought about that, but im not really painting the game for play reasons, more of a painting exercise.
I really like painting and just wanted to do a project, for the sake of doing a project almost.
I could play AA with old bits of cardboard, this is just for fun
So I got home from work to find that my partner had been playing with my Axis and Allies models :-P

I had to laugh and take this picture.
@Imperious:
what types of paint did you use and what colors or brushes were used?
I have a bunch of Citadel paints from my Warhammer 40k days. Codex Grey was used a lot, as well as your basic colours (Black,Red). All models were spray based by a can of citadal chaos black after i blue tacked them onto a cardboard sheet. (Actually the packing box my aa50 came in chopped up)
For the german specific tones I use the Flames of War German Infantry Paint set. Flames of war is a local New Zealand model company and they do national paint sets based on historic uniforms.
http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=141&art_id=760
Brushes, I use a standard 1 for basing, 0 for most detail and a 000 for real fine work. My brushes are not good and probably need to be replaced as i’ve been using some of them for about 8 years on and off.
Thanks guys.
Current plan is to paint the nations in turn order according to the 1941 scenario (Makes as much sense as any other selection system i could think of)
I’ve done the German Battleships, Cruisers and Aircraft carriers and will try to update pictures later in the weekend.
Off to the model store to grab a flames of war “Soviet paint set” today ;)
All posts about my fully customized and painted AA50 set are now on my blog vom-krieg. Thanks for all the support.

The 88mm was also used in the artillery role as well even though it was not designed for it. Personally I think the 88mm is just fine as an artillery piece. It was best all around gun the Germans had.
I do agree with “Ithkrall” that the Hummel and Wespe would be more accurate. However, I think they would create confusion because they are mounted on tank bodies. What ever artillery pieces are chosen, it should be a nonmotorized version.
Fixed, as i made that suggestion. I also pointed out that motorized artillery would possibly confuse people.
I think my issue with the 88mm flak is also to do with it being a flak gun. If there were no “AA gun” models in the game, id agree. Personally, I’d love national AA gun models and have the 88mm there (I think a few people would like say 4-6 AA models per nation of your very own, and only dipping into the generic pool if you need too).
It just doesn’t look right on the board to my eyes (and the models for the 88mm in AA50 are not fun to paint)
personally i like the 88mm flak piece for german arty. i mean, it was used in this role :-P
BUT, if most people want a change, then stick with the iconic and make it a pak 40
It was used in an anti-tank role, not a convention artillery “Shell them till the go deaf, then shell them some more” kind of way. A pak 40 is also an anti tank gun and not an artillery piece.
I just find it an odd selection for an artillery piece, and would prefer to see an actual piece of German artillery instead.
Plus a Hummel or Wespe model would be Hawt.

Although self propelled artillery models may confuse people who aren’t familiar with WW2 machinery.
Just a few quick ideas and suggestions for the pieces.
Iconic units! AA50 did a reasonable job at this, but ensure that the right piece is used for each nation. British fighter = Spitfire, Russian tank = t34 etc etc.
On this note, an 88mm flak gun is not an artillery piece. Either use the 10.5cm field gun, or the Wespe/Hummel self propelled artillery, I hate those flak gun models.
National variation. The Italian pieces really disappointed me because the fleet was identical to the Germans. This just seemed lazy to me…. so very lazy.
decent molds! The aa50 molds are rubbish, the seams are really pronounced on some models to the point where you cant remove them without destroying the figure. I dont mind some flash, and minor seam lines, but the AA50 pieces are just a bit too crap in this regard.
I will buy “at least” an Italian set, I am currently painting my current models and if this pack is a far higher quality than the original I will ebay my painted models and start again entirely. (And probably make enough off my lovely high quality painted set to buy a new one with some change)
Seriously, Nickiow
Using the D&D spell “Cast Wall of Text” is not exactly constructive or useful. I read your argument, and there is some good info in their but it is swamped and lost.
Might i suggest you check out this link, the skills shown here will greatly increase our understanding of what you want to say.
