RE: AA42 and ABattleMap
@P@nther:
Just one issue after the first moves:
Maybe the seazones are colored a little too dark. On the darkest parts it is sometimes hard do identify the number of ships - because of black figures on a dark-blue background.
No big thing of course.
:-)I was afraid it would be a little too much… I’ll simply lighten up the map a bit, tnx for bringing it up :)
Keep up the great work everyone.
tnx :)
Is there a way to make AA battlemap display what the pieces are when you move your cursor over it?
I’m afraid not, ABattleMap is created by someone else (Attilla is his nick, hence the “A” in “ABattleMap”), and he doesn’t work on it any longer. The only things we can do is fiddle with a module or a map. If you wish, you could adjust the pieces files (=BigPieces.bmp and Toolpieces.bmp) so that DD’s and Cru’s look more different. This way, you won’t make the mistake again. It’s pretty hard though, we did our fair share of reshaping :roll:

RE: Naval Battles
Welcome gn0me!
I have another question regarding naval battles; offshore bombardment can only occur in combination with amphibeus assaults, right? Also, can cruisers/battle ships offshore bombard each round in the battle or only the first round?
Thanks in advance
Offshore bombardment only occurs in combination with amphibeous assault. The bombardments occur only in the first round. The amount of bombardments is the lesser of 1. the amount of land units engaging “amphibeously” (= moving from a transport ship into a hostile territory) or 2. the amount of ships able to do a bombardment (= cruisers and battleships engaging in the amphibeous assault). Enemy units hit by an offshore bombardment are allowed to return fire.
Note that it is not possible to take any hits dealt by the defending player onto your ships during an amphibeous assault. The assaulting ships do not engage in the combat directly, but are only allowed a first round die roll to deal some extra damage to the defending player’s units in the assaulted territory.

RE: AA42 and ABattleMap
the computer told me to piss off.
Could you be a bit more specific; the link’s working fine over here…

RE: Pacific 1940 - Limited Edition or not?
It’s Adlertag’s response to Andy Dandy. I think it’s something about combined shipping? To save money by combining pre-orders?
You’re right.
“sammen” means together, and “dele” means to share. And ofcourse shipping == shipping and kost == cost. But that’s as far as my passive Nordic goes… -
RE: Allied Strategy Discussion
I like bugoo’s idea a lot: coastal bomb Borneo, ofcourse!
Veqryn, 2 arm a turn for Russia? I’d like to stick with 2ftr 1 rtl round 1 purchase, because the fighters come in real handy when trading territories. For the rest, inf + 1 arm or inf + 1 rtl each round will bolster Russia’s defensive capabilities in the long run. Though maybe defense isn’t all Russia needs…
As for your UK atlantic combat move: you’re assuming your UK fleet is still alive. But what after this G1:
sub SZ8 -> trn SZ1
ftr Nwy, bmr Ger -> BB, trn, sub SZ2
ftr Weu, ftr Ger, ftr Eeu -> Cru SZ13You’ve got no more fleet left, and the German fleet can move to SZ7…

RE: AA42 and ABattleMap
Allright, new update of the 1942 module, any complaints, suggestions or requests are welcome ;)
@P@nther:
Krieghund states:
@Krieghund:The official word is that these islands are game spaces. Iceland should have a UK roundel, and Formosa should have a Japanese one. This will be in the FAQ.
So it should be integrated.
:-)Hmm, I’m not happy with an extra two useless territories. But alas, Krieghunds will is our command, so they are integrated now :-P
@P@nther:
Just an approach:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ujnmmhwdojzUsed them, tnx!
I would say leave it in. Some of us will probably play AA42 with the techs from AA50 irregardless of what Larry or the official rules say.
I couldn’t agree more.
@P@nther:
Allright, Kenya == Rhodesia, will be changed in the next upgrade ;) Tnx for the keen eye!
Only one other issue:
What is Cuba in the module is “West Indies” in the original map. Same as in AA50 btw. There we labelled it “Cuba” - what I would prefer to do here, too.I don’t really care about this. Anyhow, Cuba is still Cuba, Kenya is now Rhodesia.
@P@nther:
I just think we should continue to work with one *.pdn.
This is why I “updated” it: to have all options for the individually preferred map.bmp.Hmm, owkay, didn’t spend much thought about it. Will make the .bmp’s when I’ll work out the ABattlePack as a .exe self-extractor (between now and 6 months :roll: )

RE: A&A'42 new and "refreshed" sculpts
The British, American and German battleship are bigger too. Overall, the units are finer detailed, for instance, the american armour or the german transport are way better than before.
-
RE: Basic Ally Strategies
Welcome both!
as long as Germany has some naval units taking out transports trying to come into France or Italy as well as guarding the east coast with just enough defending units, the allies can’t get on land.
This seems odd… You should be able to clear the atlantic of German subs during the game. Then invade Europe via Norway/Leningrad/Baltic (often done by the UK). Invade France if it is possible, but don’t make it your focus. Make sure you get Africa and clear the Mediterranean (usually done by USA), Egy is a crucial territory in this game.
This is a KGF, or Kill Germany First. The other idea is KJF, Kill Japan First, which involves aggressive moves of the Indian and Australian UK fleet in turn 1, an IC in India and Sinkiang, etc. Pro’s don’t use this, but it is really fun to play :)
For the Axis, it usually comes down to kicking the crap out of USSR. Just keep cool, Russia’s harder than it looks, especially if UK can support them via the baltic/Leningrad/Nwy.
So in short: 1. clear the atlantic of enemy vessels. 2. conquer Egy and Leningrad, Africa and the Baltic sea are points worthy of your attention. 3. Hold out with Russia as long as possible (buy lots of inf).

RE: AA42 and ABattleMap
@P@nther:
What I did with your .pdn is:
- removed my “alternative Info Item”-layer
- added a layer with the AA-logo removed
- added another layer with AA-logo removed and “black lines” added
So this leaves all possible combinations to meet one’s individual needs ;-)
Sry, I like the logo too much, but your map will definately in the future ABattlePack 8-)
@P@nther:
The “new” colors of the BigPieces are nice.
I’m just thinking about the AA-guns… I think I prefer the guns in national colors on a white background, because they are easier to identify in a territory with many units in it.But this is an individual question of “taste” of course and can be easily modified.
You’re probably right… I’ll try something else when updating the map again.
@P@nther:
I got my copy of 1942 today.
What is named “Kenya” in the ABattlemap-1942-module is “Rhodesia” on the “real” map.
I will go through the other territories before re-labelling
;-)
@P@nther:
I quickly checked the setup before … everything looks fine :-)
Allright, Kenya == Rhodesia, will be changed in the next upgrade ;) Tnx for the keen eye!
On a sidenote, am I right you like this version of A&A also better than AA50? You once stated you had hoped AA50 would be an “upgrade” of AAR, but that it turned out to be a whole new game. I for one like it better than AA50 because it doesn’t take so damn long to play a game :x

RE: 1942: Territory question
Hey Panther, I was just about to answer your post in the ABattleMap thread :roll:
Anyway, here’s what I wanted to say:
@P@nther:I’m wondering about Iceland and Formosa. Both territories are labelled, both do not have an IPC value, both do not have a control marker.
They don’t have a control marker, unlike Greenland, Gibraltar or Caroline Islands, so I think they’re “just for fun”, and aren’t separate territories.

RE: Why is AA42 being hated by everyone? I just bought a copy. Sigh.
I’m a completely new AA player. I just bought AA42, and am seeing people don’t like it very much.
By the way, what the hell is with the empty space in the box?
i lift up the map, rulebook etc, and under it is a huge box of nothing.
Most of the space inside the box is wasted. AM I MISSING SOMETHING?
is something supposed to be there? Because it’s covered up nicely as well, giving me the impression something didn’t get shipped properly…I heard the game is “broken,” besides using poker chips for the IPC thing, what else could i do to make it a “good” version of AA?
AA42 is a great game by itself: it’s better than Revised, and as you might know, Revised is still the most popular online A&A variant. So the game is still very good, though the lack of “new” things and the lesser size than AA50 gives people something to whine about. And that’s what is best heard on a forum. Since this is a budget version though (only 30 bucks!), some non-crucial items were omitted; paper money, grey chips etc. Just be creative about those aspects (poker chips for money and grey chips represent 2 extra units), and you’ll have a great game. Have fun!

RE: AA42 and ABattleMap
@P@nther:
So here are the promised files:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ltrqtmtomyq
(574 KB, 7zip-format)Included in the 7zip you will find the .pdn in which I added seperate layers for SZ-numbers, territory-names nation by nation and the Neutrals.
Many thanks! You forgot Gibraltar though :p
Also included is an alternative Info Items layer. Here I removed the Axis&Allies label in the left corner and “lined” the unit collect zones.
In AA50 I sometimes had problems to see the number of units placed there because of the black numbers on a dark background.
It is all optional of course.Those vertical black lines… shudder Though you are right the a&a logo does block sight (I never noticed cuz I never use that unit gather area). I tried something, tell me what you think.
You will find 2 bmp in the 7zip with an example of how the maps look like - one including “Axis&Allies”, one without.
By the way: Removing the Axis&Allies label reduces the file size of the map.bmp from 4.33 MB to 1.44 MB, because of the color reduction from 24 BPP to 8 BPP.
:-)You could’ve saved the regular file (with the logo) also in 8 BPP format. It would’ve worked too, without color degradation or stuff.
Now, one thing I changed: all your names were centered in the territories. As a result, most of them were blocked by IPC value or by units in the territory. So I moved the names to the sides of each territory (your layers are still in the .pdn file ofcourse). Also, I tried “fancying up” a little. It’s got kind of a 3D feel now, with a slightly scorched earth and flintly clouded seas. As a result, the .zip file is a bit bigger now, as is the .pdn file. Tell me what you guys think about it, cuz I tend to like it :roll:
@Panther: do continue making your own versions of the map, it’s fun to compare ideas and merge the best ones together.

RE: Actual AA pacific 1940 map pictures
I feel the same way. I didn’t buy the original AAP and AAE because I prefer a global contest. The ability to combine the new games into one global game was stroke of genius by Larry Harris. Clearly though, the global game is only for the most dedicated of A&A players. I know I won’t be able to convince my playgroup to sit down for a game of that scope. Getting them together for a game of AA50 is hard enough. We need software versions of these games!
True. In my gaming group AA50 is simply impossible, that’s why I like AA42 much better: it’s playable face to face.

RE: IPC record sheet for AA42 for -Over the board- (OTB) Tournament play
@Imperious:
should upload in 5 seconds.
Aah, much better, many thanks :) (The problem is I have only about 500 MB left on my HD, so I simply can’t afford to keep your .pdf’s on my laptop :roll: )
-
RE: AA42 and ABattleMap
@Imperious:
Iceland and Formosa aren’t actual game territories for AA42 either…
They both are actual territories on the OOB AA42 map.
Really? I mean, can you land on them with a fighter or conquer them like in AA50? But you’re right they are present on the map
I can try a .BMP of the map, but its a high meg file and BMP usually wont work for this
With what program do you create your image files?
@P@nther:
One issue I found out by quick checking: In the nation overwiew the underlying text is “Technology” where “Victory Cities” should be.
Blimey, you’re right!
Yeah, true… But a bit fancier wouldn’t hurt: territory names would be handy etc. …
I’m going to add territory names and SZ as I did in AA50 as soon as I find some time for it (not before 19th of August I’m afraid). I will add layers to the .pdn then.
Maybe for a 1942BattlePack? :-)That would be great! Also, I’m thinking of making some kind of ABattlePack with modules not present in the standard ABattleMap, including a self extractor and extra image files and stuff. Just a one-click install file, with some extra functionality for those who want to adapt a module to their needs. Though I would need to learn how first. 'nyway, ideas for later.

RE: IPC record sheet for AA42 for -Over the board- (OTB) Tournament play
Save it as .png before importing it to .pdf. .png is degradationfree compression, unlike .jpg.

RE: AA42 and ABattleMap
I think the module has a error with bel, eeu, bal and ukr frontiers: they seem all wrong, eeu should limit with ukr and such
You were right, this was a little bug, it is fixed now, an updated version is attached to one of my previous posts.
Holkann I would advise against trying to get too artistic with the AA42 module. The reason being is the size of the map on monitors and that artistic details in the background sometimes obscure the unit numbers. Honestly for battlemap I feel that plain solid colored territories work the best. With an actual printed map which is ILs goal for his maps these items are not issues.
Yeah, true… But a bit fancier wouldn’t hurt: territory names would be handy etc. And in the end, one can simply change the map by changing the Map.bmp file… Although that won’t be possible with IL’s map, because of territory border differences. Aw well, for now, his map doesn’t fulfill my high standards (sry IL :p ).
IL you need to remove the words “malta” and “azores” to differentiate them from actual game territories like “iceland” and “formosa” right?
Iceland and Formosa aren’t actual game territories for AA42 either…
yeah a44bigdog needs a plain border to generate the territory info for abattlemap
either IL give him a version without the pretty graphics
or it’ll be faster to star from scratchThere is a version (almost from scratch) ready if you want to play the game, see one of my first posts in this thread, the module attached to the post.
@Imperious:
If you want my map more plain i can do this.
What I really need is a layered file format version (Paint.Net or Gimp) of your map, otherwise it will be very hard to make a module out of it because I need a .bmp file with only the territory borders in black and all the rest in white. So even if you make a more plain one, you’d need to make that territory borders file too. If you make a good map file and a good territory file, I’ll make a module out of it. But otherwise it probably won’t happen…
-
RE: AA42 and ABattleMap
@Imperious:
OK i have spent some time proofing. I think this is the final. I fixed everything and yes your correct as usual. I am not detail oriented in this respect, but at least its correct now. :mrgreen:
You can go ahead and convert to battlemap or what not. Just credit me: Imperious Leader
Lol, I’m VERY detail oriented :evil: For instance, your China has another color than USA, which is strange in AA42. And your USA territories don’t have the background all the other land territories have.
Now, about ABattleMap modules: I’ve made a working one, but it’s fun as in functional and not as in fun to look at. Your map is both, but it’s impossible to make a module out of your .pdf file; I also need a matching file with only the borders of the different territories present to make a module. If you’d like to be credited, you’re gonna have to send me either the “borders” file, or a layered file format version of your map (so no .pdf). Otherwise, credits of map design go to me :-P

RE: AA42 and ABattleMap
@Imperious:
SZ 55 still is bordering to Wca, whilst on the pics of boardgamegeek, it isn’t.
I am going by my actual map from my copy of AA42. IN it it does. From SZ 54 you can hit California, from SZ 55 the same.
You’re right, but it’s not what I said. I said Sea Zone 55 is bordering to West-Canada on your map, whereas on the pics of the map on boardgamegeek, it doesn’t. The only Sea Zone bordering to West-Canada is Sea Zone 64. Check your actual copy of AA42 whether I’m right or not :|
