RE: What to buy ?
Buy the new starter pack. You’ll also need a couple of boosters just to start. There’s not enough in one starter pack to learn how to play. The game can be played with the new or old figures. Some notes
Old starter packs have old maps with 2" hexes. That is what we play with online here.
New starter packs have new maps with 3" hexes. There are 4 sets of rules: Orignal, Revised (this added the aircraft rules), next generation revised (this added the new 3" maps), expanded (this one doesn’t come with any starter packs, its bought seperatly about $20, comes with some extra maps, has some extra “expanded rules”, the expanded rules are very complicated and not used by anyone I know who logs on at this web site, also adding that for $20 the book is made like crap)
original 5 sets are
Base
Set II
Contested skys
D-Day
ReserviceNew 2 sets are
1939 - 1945
North AfricaSome units in the original sets have been recosted.

RE: More 1940 Germans units available to combat the French horde
For those of you that needed to see for themselves that 1940 France vs Germany is in French favor please check out my game vs Shemar.
It is historically accurate (minus the para drop) and he put together a nice army w/aircraft. He’s been on the offensive most of the time while my guys are defending. His Messerschmitt slowly took out my whole army of infantry and/or pinned them down with disruption. This was typical of the early war. German air superiority.
Advantage is still in the Frech favor (round 10), Shemar has his last two attacks close assualt on my disrupted Char. Rolling 7 & 8. A destoryed will swing the pnt count in his favor, anyting other France will win the game.

RE: Ammo and Fuel Dumps
Supply vs damand
More army needs more supply. Depots should cost more if they are supplying more…

RE: AAM at Historicon 2008
I am back from my first Historicon experience and must admit I had more fun playing at the Axis & Allies Miniatures than I did at any of the huge, 8 player and up, historical games.
My brother ran me through a short Flames of War demo and it was OK. But the funny thing was … we showed back up to the WOTC table on Saturday night with an ammo can of cold beers and played a 300 point Eastern Front late war game with 4 players on the cool map Steve (WOTC Staff) brought.
The only frustrating thing to me was that many of the attendees of the WOTC table were kids dropped off by their dads on the way to some other big table game. This left Steve having to demo the game to a bunch of kids who were primarily interested in the free give-aways. Don’t get me wrong, Steve did a great job with them. It’s just a shame that the table wasn’t equally attended by gaming adults.
I’ll have to attend next year… what kind of give-awys did they have? Any cool scenarios?

RE: What comes first
@Der:
Exactly…
Use your common sense Half-A-Sac…
How can there be DF if movement roll fails…
That means unit never moved…Don’t make me drive all the way out to Long Island and smack you…
This is actually your life long problem… only looking at things one way…
A succesful attack can stop the unit in the starting hex, so how can the movement roll take place?
Have a nice drive back to queens with no teeth.

RE: What comes first
Yep, confirmed:

Slowly have to rebuild my rules-lawyer status :-P
Wow… what I can’t believe is that it’s in the rulbook!!!

What comes first
What comes first… movement roll or defensive fire… and if the movement roll fails does defensive fire still happen?

RE: Two new North Africa scenarios
If I was going to guess, they are cutting off the “free” information to cripple peopl like us who use it to play “virtually”. There are lots of people who post that they play AAM with other minis they already own by printing the stats of the new units. Plus WotC has Gleemax which is supposed to be a game portal and they might be working on some AAM offering there in the future so they dont want competition. Just my conspiracy theory :-D
Too bad…
Personally I’ve invested thousands and I’m playing online.
Even still what’s that have to do with being too lazy to set it up on the old pdf format?

Two new North Africa scenarios
I’ll just have to complain… NO PDF…
thanks

RE: I don't like this smite thing much
Hey, I’m the only minis player whose smite is more than my appl.
I’ll have to fix this.

I case you hadn’t noticed, you have to have 100 posts to give karma, so your fake accounts beter start posting allot.

RE: Sideskirts
Bazookas, and panzer schreks and fausts, are shape charges. Skirts are specifically designed to defend against them. Mot is correct an AT gun fires a high velocity solid round designed to penetrate armor, this type of round is too heavy for a hand held weapon, but it is more effective and side skirts don’t make much difference against Armor piercers.
Think of a shape charge as a headlight. The beam is focused at a specific point. That point is the tip of the nose cone. The blast is focused and super heats that spot forming plasma from the armor itself making a hole and pushing through. Side skirts create an air space and make that plasma jet less effective. And the mesh Idea is actually more effective in this. In fact that’s what we use on strikers today to defeat RPGs, which are modern panzer fausts.
So in short, the effect of skirts on close assault would be a bonus. The reality is that the only defense against close assault is machineguns and infantry accompaniment.
Also btw the only real difference between a Garand and a BAR is ammo capasity and rate of fire. BAR hold more and shoots faster. Same bullet though.
Correct me if I’m saying something stupid but the Bar gun also fired a higher velocity and higher impact shot.

RE: Sideskirts
@Der:
I’m trying to stress out that a bar gunner and garand both have the same attack vs vehicles at medium range. Rolling “2”. Both units would have an equal chance to score a hit on a disrupted/damaged german tank from the rear having a defense of 5/3. However, add side skirts and the garand no longer has the ability to do any damage from medium range because it’s basically penalized for have close assault.
I’m confused here…
Doesn’t a Garand roll 0 dice at med range against vehicles, maybe 1 dice with stars and stripes.
I’m thinking M1 Garand rolls 2/0/0 or 3/1/0 with SnS.
Bar would stay as you mentioned above at 2/2/0
Corrected, its short range
Bar
2/2/0
Garand 2/0/0 -

RE: Superior Camouflage
The key is the Brumbar’s blast ability… without it bombardment does not allow a unit to attack a unit with superior camouflage at med or longe range… as Mot points out it’s only possible if blast targets another unit.
Blast is also useful to target units on transports which normally are not allowed to be targets.
