That matt laminated finish is really nice. I noticed also you did yours with a border, very cool. I didn’t do the border, because as you can see with my table any wider and it would not have fit. Playing on the larger board is definitely superior to the old smaller one, so much so that I would have to say that it adds to the gameplay experience. It appears us Aussies have a taste for the finer things in life, haha.

Thanks Krieghund as usual, you’ve come to the rescue :)

Rocket Strike and Strategic Bombing Question
If the player has strategic bombing and rocket strike capability, collectively they can still only take down the value of the IPC territory which the industrial complex is sitting on right? I mean lets say someone Strategic bombs Germany and rocket strikes it, they can’t take more than 8 right? Does this also work with more than one country. I mean hypothetically could Britain then America bomb Germany taking a maximum of 16 IPCs from Germany. Or is the Germany territory strictly limited to an 8 IPC loss before the German player has his turn again?
Also with rocket strikes you can only have one rocket per territory attacking a another territory, and the rocket strike can only occur once per turn. So does this mean say that if Britain from the British mainland rocket strikes Germany, USA can’t rocket strike Germany again in that same turn from the British Mainland or on any other territory for that matter?

RE: A&A Enlarged Map
I got it, the original size 3 feet by 5 and a half feet. Looks awesome! It actually ended up fitting my table somehow, maybe those dogs down at Kinko sneakily reduced the size by an inch. Nonetheless I am happy, they said three days, and it was ready today, so only a day wait. Anyways I attached my picture for all those who’d like to view.

RE: A&A Enlarged Map
Yeah good point Ivan, but with laminated boards, you can just as easily roll em up and put em away. The only negative to this is that without holding the board down you can’t prevent it from curling up. I think blue-tack will solve this easily however…

RE: A&A Enlarged Map
Hmmm, oh well, I will just go ahead with this one, I think if I screw around with the pixel size it will not look the same. Is that right? I mean I just reduced the pixel size then on my computer to make the map smaller, and it doesn’t look at good. I know the more pixels you have in a smaller area the better, but when you reduce pixel size from a previous size it doesn’t look at good, is that right?

RE: A&A Enlarged Map
Hmmm I just came across a bit of a problem, stupid really, but none of my tables fit the dimensions! Except the one siting outside in the patio. I think I will have to get the map size reduced. I have one fat table so its fine wide ways, but is just under 4-8 feet long, and I need 5 and a half feet! The other table is long, but just under 3 feet wide. So when you factor in the 5mm on either side of the lamination, the map will be just over 3 feet, which means the sides of the map will be hanging over the edge of the table. You think I should worry about that? That the sides will hang over the edge just a little? I mean I think it’d be nice to play the game, and lean with one hand on the edge of the table without fearing that you will tip the map. I better fix this quick before they process the order.

RE: A&A Enlarged Map
Yeah its expensive, but I live in Australia so to get that shipped is probably not going to happen, and if it did the wait would be like months. Even if I could ship it to Australia, after you factor in shipping costs, and then the costs to get it laminated, then your looking at something like 100 Australian dollars at least. Now thats a alot cheaper than Kinkos still, up at 190 Australian dollars. So yes it boils down to the fact that I am an impatient person, who’d prefer to wait his 3 days rather than his 3 months.

A&A Enlarged Map
I just went down to Kinkos, and got them to print off the 5 and a half by 3 feet map from bionic donkeys (http://bionicdonkeys.com/iWeb/A%26A map/Axis %26 Allies game map.html). They are also gonna laminate it for me, should be ready by Monday, so I’ll have a picture to show everyone of it. I can’t wait.

RE: Special Sub Scenario
Attacked my submarines with the battleship and transport thought right?
-
RE: Special Sub Scenario
Thats ridiculous if you ask me. If germany gets super subs, then their ability is totally wasted if Britain builds up an airforce. The air power will attack the subs, and totally negate their attack of 3 making them victim of a strike from which they can not return fire and only submerge.
-
RE: Special Sub Scenario
Can aircraft by themselves attack submarines?
-
RE: Special Sub Scenario
Thanks so much, that makes everything alot more clearer. One more thing though, I still don’t fully understand the sub sneak attack. Like whats the point of the subs firing first (assume no destroyer present) on defense if the attacker still gets to fire back? Also if the subs say attack a lone battleship, they can fire and then submerge without the battleship firing back?
-
Special Sub Scenario
In the last game I played as Germany, I had two subs off the coast of Western Europe, and the British player had two transports, some planes, and a battleship. Rather than fight my subs out with his battleship and then if successful land his troops in Western Europe with transports, he opted to attack my subs with his aircraft making them submerge, and then he moved his men in with his transports. Is this possible? I mean subs can’t fire at aircraft, and I know in AAE you had to have a destroyer to attack subs with aircraft, but Revised seems to make out that aircraft can clear a sea zone without there ever being any combat rolls simply because subs have first strike, subs can’t fire back, therefore they submerge when attacked by air.

RE: Industrial complex question
Thanks Cpt Jack et al. I shall have to play like that in the future then. Last game we had Germany took Russia, but because Britain got Southern Europe it could churn out unlimited tanks there, and this proved Germany’s undoing.
-
Industrial complex question
If an allied nation takes southern europe, and therefore the industrial complex in it. Are the limited to producing six units per turn from it? Or because its an industrial complex from the beginning of the game can they produce unlimited units?

Yeah I was half wondering if you were being sarcastic or serious, hehe. I might do that then :)

Ok still learning out to use quote, that last part of my previous post should be outside of the quote.
The ‘it does sound a bit…’

RE: BOTB rule clarifications
A&A games are some of the most rewarding games I have ever played. I remember when I was 15 and I found the original Larry Harris game unopened in my dad’s holiday house. I was totally obsessed with World War 2 history at the time, and so I decided to slog out the 30 page manual by myself and learn the game. Having learnt it, I have been enjoying playing it ever since.
Larry would be thrilled to hear that. Why don’t you go over to his site and tell him?
Yes well it probably does sound a bit gay doesn’t it.

All the other games with the exclusion of BOTB, as you guys pointed out, are extremely similar to the original Larry Harris version, so the time investment to learn these new versions are not very daunting. BOTB however not only is it like slogging it out as if I was learning the original Larry Harris game all over again, the manual is also like a bloody enigma (and yes that is a pun). I think with BOTB all they had to do was elaborate on the rules more, and give an example of the turn from start to finish, rather than in dribs and drabs. Then they should have stuck on the box, WARNING: Forget all previous A&A conceptions and rules when learning this game. Had they done this, then who knows maybe I could have saved myself alot of time and pain. However thanks to Krieghund, I now understand the game, and I can see that it could well turn out to be my best A&A game.
Its not just a problem with BOTB though, like BOTB is a deeper problem within A&A games. The problem I think starts with A&A games, most people hate using their brain in a recreational sense, and Axis and Allies games do just that. I liken them to chess with chance, but how many people do you know that like chess? Its a shame, but I suppose those of us who love our military history, our strategy, and being able to play it out on a board game, are and always will be a very small minority.
