I have seen opening France attacks go sideways a few times. Usually Italy will come in and mop it up, so there isn’t too much value in adding units that will die anyways. And to be honest, Italy with the extra income each round plus 19 more in R2 can make for a much stronger Italy!

RE: Incorrect wording on the Italian NO
My bad on this one Panther. I just finished a game where I thought subs were denying the NO, but it seems even when the allied fleets left the Med, there was at least one dd or ac remaining. Sorry about that! :)

RE: Need a little help the game is preditable
@Warhawk77 I think it comes down to early decisions. If players play the same way each time, the game may take a certain predictable path. But as soon as someone tries something new, the game can be turned on its head. For instance, a round 1 Barbarossa is very different than a late (Italy round 3) one. Japan attacking the Allies on round 1 is a different game compared to round 3. Try different approaches and you’ll see different results for sure!

RE: Need a little help the game is preditable
@Flying-Tigerz There’s one exception to whether newly-hostile ships block enemy movement on the turn that war is declared:
From the rulebook: “During your Combat Move phase in which you entered into a state of war, your transports that are already in sea zones that have just become hostile may be loaded in those sea zones (but not in other hostile sea zones). In effect, transports may be loaded in their initial sea zones for amphibious assaults before war is declared, while the sea zone is still friendly.”
I’ve actually never seen this in play, but it’s part of the rules nonetheless.

RE: What is the most unusual/annoying/strange allied bid
@WindowWasher I was thinking about this recently too lol.
3 Russian tanks in siberia would definitely alter the Sino-Soviet relationship. Or how about a tank, art and fighter?
I also want to say that two fighters at Scotland should be able to disrupt G1 just enough since the possibility of scramble always forces the G1 attacker to overcompensate.
A transport at New Zealand would allow ANZAC to capture Brazil round 1 (and maybe put an IC there round 2). A little Anzac presence in the Atlantic anyone? :)
I really like the discussion around AAA, maybe in Normandy, even if only to add some anxiety to German plans to use air to help conquer the French.
That’s about as wacky as I can think of. If the whole bid doesn’t have to be spent up-front, then giving ANZAC enough to buy an IC in round 1 should be pretty advantageous too.

RE: Italian Pacific Bombers
@windowwasher I’ve done that on occasion and it can be really effective.
My route of choice is via Greece - from there Yunnan and Kweichow are in reach.

RE: League General Discussion Thread
Essentially, all players should use the same version and then the problem doesn’t occur. I’m playing two games at the moment, one using 2.2.20868 and for the other I’m using 2.1.20365 because that’s what my opponent is using.
And it’s more than just the game hanging, it also removes sub evasion and submerging, and it interferes with the subs stealth movement.

RE: Submarine-related Issues with TripleA
@simon33 Confirmed!
I started a game with 2.2.20868, saved it, and then loaded the file with 2.1.20365 and reproduced the problem. Same thing happened with:
2.2.20868 > 2.0.20234,
2.2.20790 > 2.1.20365, and
2.2.20790 > 2.0.20234.But it did not happen with
2.2.20868 > 2.2.20790, or
2.1.20365 > 2.0.20234.So it seems that the update from 2.1.20365 to 2.2.20790 is key. My guess is that, if everyone is using 2.2.x, or 2.1.x or earlier, the problem doesn’t occur. But if there is a mix of 2.2.x & 2.1.x or earlier, the problem surfaces.
Bottom line, everyone should update to the latest version.
Thanks for your help with this!

RE: Question : Best calculator out there?
So I have a decent stats background in that I have studied & understand descriptive and inferential statistical methods. But I think you are really looking for someone who understands probability to recommend something based on a sound methodology.
I second TripleA’s calculator. I would add that it’s important to learn the default order of loss and to modify it depending on the battle you’ll run, and to understand when default loss order can be different from what people would do in real life. For instance, a sea battle where ACs are needed to land planes would disqualify them from being used as first-hit fodder. To my knowledge there is no way to tell TripleA not to assign hits to them first, so the only real way to simulate that is to run the battle without ACs.
Another example is sea battles with a DD and planes against multiple subs - once the DD is dead, the subs are safe, but I’ve seen the calculator not take that into account, overestimating the chance of success. I think submerged subs results in a victory for the attacker, but is it really?
So basically if you’re familiar with the limitations and customizations, TripleA is definitely good.

no problemo! I didn’t feel like it was a nag at all

RE: Need a little help the game is preditable
@Red-Harvest the situation you suggest on G1 is a good example, but as you said it’s unlikely to occur for the reasons you outline.
The only other possible situation I can see is still easily countered: a transport off Siam. But that can be countered by UK blocking Burma & Sumatra. Might be able to pick off the UK navy that way, but I don’t think it’s worth it. Even a harbour in Kainan/Kwangsi is easily countered. A lot of investment in a feign that doesn’t really threaten India, and diverts much needed units from China & the money islands. Not worth it imo

RE: L20 BM3 freh vs LennardF (Allies+20)
@LennardF yeah it’s ok, I think I would have kept the subs in as well. all good!

RE: G40 Balance Mod - Feedback Thread
I have a question: What is the going bid for BM? I’m getting back into it and I’m curious as originally the goal was to eliminate bids but I think they’re still around?
As for the increased costs to bombers, for what it’s worth, I think an increase to 14 makes sense. Every single unit in A&A has had some cost or attribute change since the original game (if you count inf getting the art bonus hehe), so it makes sense to reconsider value from time to time as the game evolves and strategies develop.
Personally I like the sbr bonus at 2 or 3. What really makes them overpowered, in my opinion, is their airbase range. Not saying that should be changed though as that would have a huge impact. I still remember the long ago forum discussions around weakening the defence of ACs from 3 to 2, and making subs weaker on defense, and 2-hit battleships. Great discussions to have and good ideas often flow from them!

RE: Mongolia problem
So, I just tried recreating it, and I could recreate it, twice in fact. I included one of the files below. I replicated the same combats (not the exact same moves, just the areas & SZs attacked):
- on J2, declared war on all allies and Russia
- I blitzed a tank from Korea to Amur and then Sakha, and a single inf amphib to SFE,
- amphib attack at a US fighter on guam, undefended Anzac transport at DEI, and then conventional attacks on Kwangtung, Yunnan, Phillippines, and SZ 41 (UK cr).
It seems normally the trigger (Mong to Russian units/control, hereafter called ‘the trigger’) occurs at the beginning of the combat phase, but when I tried to recreate it, and it did switch MON to RUS, it did it at the end of the combat phase. So this makes me think that the problem is related to circumstances when the trigger happens at the end of the combat phase, rather than the beginning of it. Because sometimes it happens before you resolve all combat.
In this case, I declined the scramble, confirmed attacking a transport, and confirmed a bombard. Then I went through all the battles, and when completed, the trigger didn’t happen.
I continued on in the defective file (not the one attached, but the original), just to see what happens with a still neutral Mongolia, and this is what I discovered:
- As Russia, in the politics phase, I could declare war on Mongolia separate from the Neutrals (never knew this was a thing)
- If, as Japan, I moved into Buryatia, then it would trigger Mongolia to become Russian.
- But if I did nothing, just went through the whole turn and didn’t move anything, then the trigger doesn’t occur, even though Amur is Japanese.
So, the best guess that I can offer is this:
- I think it has something to do with the fact that the other prompts I had (scramble, attacks on transports, bombards) pushed the trigger to the end of the combat phase, not the beginning.
- I think it is related to the fact that I blitzed through Amur, and so it wasn’t enemy occupied during the combat phase. In addition, this persisted to the next turn, since if I did nothing on the following turn, the trigger wouldn’t be pulled and Mongolia would stay neutral. It’s as if the engine decided that Amur wasn’t a reason to trigger the trigger.
Maybe this is just a weird obscurity that should be added to the player enforced rules part of the game.

RE: L20 freh vs Sovietishcat (a+14) BM3 v2.1.2
@Sovietishcat I figured you wouldn’t scramble at India but let me know if you wanted to and I’ll roll it.
-
RE: Mongolia problem
@barnee yeah, that makes sense. I must’ve tried about 40 different scenarios - I didn’t record the variables diligently, but off the top of my head, having a unit in Amur was always enough to trigger the switch. Sometimes it would trigger at the beginning of the combat phase, before any battles were run, which is strange.
I’ll give a shout-out to all the programmers and developers out there who keep this game working, because I definitely don’t have the time at this stage in my life to run sims and isolate the factors that are causing this. For those that do, and keep triplea working in general, hats off to you!!!

RE: freh (x) vs Soviestishcat (L+14) L20 v2.1
@Sovietishcat Hey, I’m an idiot!!!
I started the game as 2nd ed. by accident instead of BM3.
I can edit it so we continue but with BM3. Sorry about that. Does that sound good?

RE: freh (x) vs Soviestishcat (L+14) L20 v2.1
@Sovietishcat Sorry, I was so fixated on the med that I forgot to move my East Africa units. Hope the edits are ok.
