So when other units attack an aircraft, is it treated as a soldier or a tank?
Soldier. The attacker gets a -1 to each die, unless it has anti-air.

Just wondering which of the revised units you never planned on using, or used infrequently, but now plan on implementing regularly?
For me, it’s the Puma, Easy Eight, and Chaffee for sure, and possibly the Nashorn.
The people around here that play A&AM seem to all play FoW as well, except for me. I hate having to make my own units (paint, glue, etc), the cost of all those Warhammer type games, and the fact it’s more complex. To be fair though, aside from this game, I hate table-top games like D&D or whatever. It’s kind of like how I think it’s cool to play CoD4 online, but think WoW is for dorks…. Flames looks like a decent game, I just don’t get it, I guess.
Dude that is so funny you mentioin that Ducky. I was a Warhammer FREAK in when I was a kid and MY WHOLE LIFE was painting those damn miniatures before battle. I wanted to do a good job too, so I would sometimes spend 6-9 hours on just one. That’s all I did, paint and play. Oh – and listen the The Doors and Rush while painting (on tape). God I was such a dork! :-P
lol that’s funny. I guess everyone has something shameful to admit. My only serious dorkiness comes in the form of Star Wars knowledge. I don’t care how dorky I look anymore though…. I look like a football hooligan so nobody would hassle me anyways :P Though I do feel like I stick out like a sore thumb at the shop I buy minis at….
Thanks for the help. Both of you. Now where the crap are you reading all these rules!!
Expanded rules book for me…
I haven’t played Tide of Iron yet, but it can’t possibly have as much variety. It does look like a fun game though. Kind of halfway between this and Risk, in terms of depth.
The new revised rules added the Agility SA to the zero, while keeping it the cheapest fighter at 12 pts…so maybe they are not as bad as you might think! You can easily field two in a Japanses build.
That is a good point, but the 3/3 armor really keeps it less appealing.

I just got my first plane. A japensese Zero. Now if I could only get the Meserschmitt Ace & Stuka plus an ammo & fuel dump, I’d be perfectly happy.
I do not fully understand the plane rules & I don’t find them explained in depth in the online advanced rules. I’m figuring it out the best of my ability though.
The game flows in this order:
deployment
movement phase
aircraft placement
aircraft attack
assault phase
casualty phase (remove aircraft)
It can be a big advantage to go first if you have an Ace aircraft because of their 4 hex defensive fire ability. Unfortunately, the Zero is the crappiest plane you could’ve possibly gotten, so don’t let its shoddy performance turn you off the idea of using them. The aircraft can only shoot straight ahead, so whichever way they are facing, use the lines going diagonally forward to determine that. In terms of getting attacked, anything attacking the aircraft without the anti-air special ability suffers a -1 to it’s dice rolls. I don’t remember the rule exactly, but if the unit is not directly infront of the aircraft, it suffers a -1 penalty to its range as well (so if it’s 3 hexes away, you count it as 4 away).

find the ones for sets 1-5 on their respective pages on the link below:

…a few pieces of info that stood out to me:
Guards T-34/85 - 34 points
Sherman VC Firefly - 24 points
Centurion A41 - 44 points
Nashorn - 40 points
Panzer II (F) Flamingo - 14 points
SS-Panzer IV Ausf. F2 - 27 points
Sd Kfz 234/2 Puma - 17 points
Jagdtiger - 54 points
Veteran Tiger - 68 points
Semovente 90/53 - 26 points
Of all the adjustments from all the sets, the 17 point Puma (IMO) is easily the best bargain. They’ve also removed Superior Armor 2 from the Tigers (among other things) and replaced it with Heavy Armor, which nullifies the first damaged counter.
Notice that Karma goin’ up Ducky. Ha haa! I finally have the priviledge to smite and applaude whom I wish. All the power, all the glory!! Ha HAAA!! It’s ALL mine!!!
Thanks!! Let the good times roll… now if only the stupid rules update was posted…
He leaks a lot of accurate things and it has been proven on the official boards.
According to M2A0, the new rules are finished. He said now it is just a matter of when the WotC guys will post on the website…. Should be up next week.
My Russia is always outclassed by Germany. I’ve won with them, but don’t remember the last time. I had an amazing 200 point build, but bit the dust because of an unfavorable side of the map for me, and a very favorable one for him, as well as the fact he fielded almost no armor, which screwed me. Both of us use Russia well (quick and aggressive), but Germany always seems to come out on top. Either because of it hitting harder or just being awesome at playing defensively against Soviet armor. When they are dug in, Russia’s aggression really doesn’t pay off, and it can’t play defensively because of lacking range on attacks. I have a problem of building a Soviet army to take on what I’d personally field as a German player, which I didn’t realize until the last game I played, when I opted to take a KV-1 instead of a Soviet Partisans platoon, and got eaten alive by 5 PAK40s and some MG teams…
My next build is going to be balanced for once… not 90% armor:
Soviet T-34 Platoon - 78
-1x Guards T-34/85
-2x T-34/75
-2x PPSh-41 SMG
Soviet Assault Gun Platoon - 59
-4x SU-76M
Soviet Partisans - 23 (x2)
-1x Cossack Captain
-3x Communist Partisans
-1x Fanatical Sniper
Maxim M1910 MG - 7 (x2)
Mousin-Nagant 1891/30 - 3
Ammo Dump - 10
(the cool thing about the Soviet Partisans platoon is that it doesn’t count against “special unit” limits and all the 6 communist partisans and 2 fanatical snipers within them have a special rule of being deployed on any unoccupied edge hex… 2 snipers with crack shot behind enemy lines!!)
I can’t remember the last time my Germans lost though, which is nice. The only side I have a hard time with is the USA, solely because their infantry is really amazing.
Mine is probably Russia. I have a really solid force, but it just seems to get ripped apart every time. The one game I used Nationalist China to take on Japan (with no year limits) I did really well, so it’s odd how bad I do with Russia…
The tricky thing with this game is that you don’t feel like it’s costing you that much as you buy a few boosters here and there, but it certainly adds up after awhile. One of the best units in terms of cheap but powerful is the PAK40. 14 points, but it dominates tanks.
The WVI are awesome, and so are the Veteran Fallschirmjager and StuG III Ausf. D. I try and field those things most of the time. My first 15-20 games or so all involved the StuG D…
Speaking of honor, perhaps its been a little unfair that I’ve been playing someone who does not have a weapon with “bombardment”. Well last night we both bought out the rest of the Afrika and contested skies packs at our local store and we STILL haven’t got a single plane. I’m really getting irritated. We’re just going to buy individually. He was really cool though and traded me 4 German units for a Russian Su-122.
I got the 2 rare russian tanks in buying 2 afrika packs and out of BOTH of those packs, I only was given 2 axis cards. REALLY irritating. My opponent now has an amazing array or armor and plays Russia quite well. So I think my tanks are finally going see an end to their overwhelming supperiority on the field.
How many pieces do each of you have, roughly?
Ironically, I found Contested Skies didn’t net me a ton of planes. I got a ton out of the green 1939-1945 boosters though…
But on some level games mirror our real life attitudes
That is a very introspective point. The games do bring out traits in our personality and that’s why these dicussions are so interesting in how they turn into moral and philosophical debates. It’s a good thing for us to go with it and challenge each others views because I know that I’m learning a lot by participating in these dicussions.
….And thank you Der Kommander. You honor my SS battalion with your unsolicited praise. We won a very one sided battle last night. One sided in the sense that more than 10 units and 2 tanks remained of my force to my enemies complete decimation. It was fear that lost this opponent his battle. He diverted his forces (US) west; away from the objective and the bulk of my force and even pulled valuable resources away from the field in fear of my Tiger 1. These actions set us up for an aggressive stance the entire game.
Anyways – I really enjoy what everybody brought to this debate which is really about morals and codes of conduct, not Axis and Allies miniatures.
Speaking of which, If you know anyone that wants to trade German stuff for my Japenese army, let me know.
I had the funniest fight ever not that long ago, speaking of German-asskickery. I beat a Soviet Army with my Germany in 1 turn. I had 2 Veteran Tigers, 2 SS Elite Infantry Platoons, and a Fallschirmjager… He took a bad selection of pieces and it was on a wide-open map. I killed more than half of his guys in my first assault phase, and all he managed to do was disrupt 2 of my infantry on his. He surrendered because he had a better chance of winning the lottery than winning that match.
At the end of the day the fact of the matter is that this is only a game, and winning is the only focus!!
National Socialism is about giving up some personal freedoms for the collective good of the state. A few friendly casualties to win the battle can be justified under those circumstances. Most countries had that philosophy back then, and I think it was better. The common good should be more important than the individual. Look at what helping the individual has gotten everyone? Invalids draining economies dry while weakening the gene pool. We’ll all end up a bunch of crippled, food-starved morons at this rate. Natural selection FTW.
