2 axis and 2 allies players for sure. Additional thought on pairing Russia. If you pair with the US, that player takes 2 turns in a row since America goes last and Russia goes first. But also, America is removed from immediate action, while Russia and UK are immediately involved in conflict. Just food for thought.

RE: Sea Battle Transport question
I worded it a bit funny, in the 2nd example the UK was attacking. Thank you for the clarifications!

Sea Battle Transport question
This has happened twice in my recent game, so i decided i needed official confirmation. Here is the most recent battle scenario
Germ attacks multinational force in SZ 109
6 Subs, 1 Dest, 1 FighterUK Defends with
3 Dest, 1 Car loaded with 2 American fighters. There are also 2 empty transports.German gets 5 hits and the UK chooses to lose it’s Destroyers and Carrier. This leaves just the fighters to defend. Here is my question. Do the germans have to continue to attack to get the transports? It will most likely mean losing their destroyer/cruiser/fighter or maybe two of them if very unlucky. Or since there are no surface ships left to defend, the transports are gone.
The prior example was opposite. UK sent a loaded transport with a force against a guarded sea zone it wanted to make an amphibious assault on. The Japanese navy had a carrier with 2 fighters on it. The carrier was lost and so was the UK attacking naval ships. What happens to the UK loaded transport if there are just Japanese planes left to defend in the final round of combat?

Adding Italy & China ('42 Mod Idea)
Just curious if anyone has ever tried to add Italy and China to this edition as a “modification” or to sort of replicate Anniversary Edition. I haven’t put the maps side by side, but it seems like maybe it could be done if you have the pieces from Global 40. Give Italy Markers to Lybia, Balkans, and Italy. Maybe add the National Objectives. Has anyone ever tried anything similar?

I live in the “Rockford, IL” area. Looking for anyone interested in A&A. I own '41, '42, and global '40. Would love to start a decent dedicated group around the area. Let me know your thoughts! I’m willing to travel too!

RE: Grasshopper's first game
@Young:
What we’re your 1st round USSR attacks?
I took out the territory facing Moscow, the territory with the fighter and tank next to the south factory, and the territory up north with the infantry and tank (sorry I don’t have my board open to name the territories). I also, abandoned my north factory as I couldn’t see a way to keep it, is it worth building there just to get countered my infantry and planes G1?
It’s easy to over commit with Russia. Lot’s of options in the opening round. Taking west Russia is a given. You ALWAYS need that buffer between the werhmacht and your capital. There is always discussion between attacking/strafing Ukraine. Attacking either Belorussia or the Baltics can be argued as well. Abandoning Karelia is a common defensive move. It’s easy to counter attack and distract the germans from the real prize. My personal rule of thumb is decide on no more than 2 attacks. Be sure you can properly defend a territory if taken. If not, leave 1 inf and abandon! Keep your art/tanks/planes alive too! Tanks and planes especially. Being able to hop through West Russia is important for counter attacking. It’s a fun dance that Russia must do to survive as long as it can. I actually enjoy playing as Russia.
My personal favorite move is to Attack W Russia and Belorussia. That’s 6 inf you are eliminating. Great to get rid of their cannon fodder early. Abandon Karelia (leave 1 inf) and stack Caucacus. That way you are ready to defend and counter very nicely the next turn.

RE: Grasshopper's first game
I’m sure I could have played Russia better, I was looking for a second attack after my 1st round but couldn’t see an opportunity without lossing position. It could have been round 4 when Russia was vulnerable, I just know that the first pair of American fighters reached Moscow round 3 and I remember being very relieved to see them there.
Even though I lost, and it was difficult playing the Allies… It was still a lot of fun.
What we’re your 1st round USSR attacks?

RE: UK1 purchase ideas
@Young:
2 art 1 inf for India and 2 Fighters for UK.  That’s pretty standard for me.  I also understand saving for Round 2 Naval build, but I have found that rather than attack sz37 i send India navy southwest around Africa and Australia Navy south east around S America.  By round 3 they join and round 4 they are ready to help invade western europe.
I like those purchases and will likely do the same, but if you don’t attack sz 37, what are you doing to help save Calcutta?
It’s been a bit. You got me hooked on 1940 and that’s where my heads been at. Funny how you switched on me! No worries…I’m sure you know that everything for the allies hinges on what the USA does. Neat thing about 42 is that you can combo with the UK in the Atlantic so I usually have enough to run a distraction on Japan In the north as well. I usually set manchuria as my destintion. Send a transport and fighters/bomber over To Russia. See how J reacts. I have 3 rounds to disrupt the axis before that UK pacific Navy unites and preps for a European assault.

RE: Lets talk about chips
I find it odd that WotC doesn’t sell accessories. IE: More IT or ANZ units, factory units, chips, or dice. im sure it’s not as large a demand for them to bother, but…well i basically answered my own question, but i still can hope and wish right!!!???

RE: Good advice for new players
Italy response to Taranto: Buy a fighter and take Gibraltar and S. France your first turn. 2nd turn take Greece. Buy subs. 3rd turn destroy remaining MED Royal Navy buy Mechs. Now you have +10 in NO plus around 16 IPC’s. Now “can open” Ukraine with ze Germans.
Kiss Africa goodbye. Move your Somolia/Ethiopia grouping either south or East and pick up 1 IPC a turn. Eventually you will get pinned, but in the process you’ve distracted the allies for a bit. Consolidate your N. African forces and play D.

G40 via video chat
Has anyone ever played G40 with anybody over skype, Google hangouts, or fb video Or is the pbm just more convenient? maybe the game is too large. Watching YGs YouTube help videos and match action inspired this post. Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

RE: Lets talk about chips
not to hijack the thread, but i thought i’d let everyone know that WotC is shipping me a replacement board! I just sent them the same picture i shared with all of you and gave my discrepancy. Nice to know that there are still honest good business out there! Now if i could only find a way to get more 1942 2nd Ed chips!!!

RE: A&A '42 2nd Ed Chips
I was actually just about to post that I’m looking for these too! Haha - you take first dibs. If anybody else has these, I am willing to trade my Europe 1940 1st edition ANZAC pieces.
The chips are just better, right?! Also, that’s a good incentive to trade ANZAC pieces! Good luck!

A&A '42 2nd Ed Chips
would love another set of A&A 2nd Ed Chips. I prefer these smaller yet thicker chips to the thin ones given in 1940.

RE: What size are the chips in this game?
Best Chips in the series IMO

RE: Lets talk about chips
Product quality has always been an issue with axis and allies games with the exception of A&A 50th Anniversary Edition… that game was awesome, nice tokens, paper money, and compartmentalized unit trays… after that, things went down hill and that’s why big fans of the game customize their own materials. Along the same issue you brought up with the air and naval base tokens, the 1st edition 1940 Europe game has thick base tokens and the Pacific 1940 1st edition has very thin base tokens. Are the 2nd edition base tokens from both europe and pacific the same thickness?
the bases are all the same size. Just crookedly printed on 1940 Pacific. Here’s the board warping and crooked prints below. the crooked prints doesn’t bother me as much as the warped board. I don’t want to have to use 6 weights to keep the damn thing flat. I can see why you guys custom make your own accessories.

RE: Lets talk about chips
I personally prefer the 1942 2nd ed chips. they have a smaller circumference but are thicker. Thus taking up less space (vital) and a bit easier to count/pick up. Was pretty disappointed when i opened up 1940 and found these huge thin chips. Sometimes i am a bit disappointed when it comes to the quality of necessary accessories with this series of awesome games.
On a separate note, the Asia board on my 1940 pacific was a bit warped. I have to place paper weights on it to make it flat. The air bases are poorly printed on pacific as well. Off centered. Anyone else have issues with product quality?
