Actually if they set the game in WWI it would work okay since there were limited air assets. Of course then they couldn’t leverage the A&A name. :|

Mu SU-85 is molded with SU 26
I finally bought a box of Contested Skies today and after I got over the disappointment of not getting an aircraft I realized that my SU-85 tank destroyer actually says SU 26 on the bottom. Has anyone else seen this? I’m not familiar with Russian armor so I don’t know if there ever was such a vehicle. When I get a chance I can post a picture.

RE: Favorite Army
I favor a Russian army right now (mostly because the bulk of my units & good armor are Russian). Of my Set II units I’ve pulled a Guards T-34 and an IS-2 in just two boosters.

RE: Possible Paratrooper House rule??
Personally I think if you roll a mis-drop then you should roll two more dice to determine where the unit actually lands. First die determines direction (you’d have to decide beforehand which hex side is #1 and count clockwise from there) and the second die determines how many hexes away it lands. This is similar to rules in other tabletop games for indirect fire weapons and I think it makes sense here.
For whatever reason letting the opponent decide what hex the mis-dropped unit lands in doesn’t seem any more fair than always having the unit land in the chosen hex (it just swings the pendulum the other way).

RE: Only useful axis is Germany
Terrain and tactical situations really do have an effect on how effective any given unit can be. I think it’s an oversimplification to say that weak tanks cost Japan the War (but that’s a whole 'nother topic in itself).
I do think that with the right kind of map a Japanese army could do pretty well in this game.

RE: Where to buy?
eBay can be a good option for buying & selling. Some of my buddies who play D&D minis reccommend Auggie’s store on eBay. You might also try the Have/Want lists over at www.maxminis.com

RE: Transportation of commanders
I can’t see any good reason why they shouldn’t be able to and it doesn’t explicitly anywhere that they can’t either.

RE: Snipers
Seems to be a Sniper’s ability to destroy an entire squad of infantry is a bit unrealistic. A face-up disruption counter seems more appropriate.
If each individual M-1 Garand is, say, seven or eight soldiers, and if each game turn represents one minute of real time, then a sniper that scores enough successes to destroy a squad of men will have shot and killed each of them in less than one minute. I guess it is possible.
Maybe a “destroyed” infantry unit doesn’t have to mean all its members are dead. They could be routed a la Squad Leader or Close Combat where they are alive but hiding in fear or some such. I know if a sniper picked off one or two of my squadmates there’s a chance I would just cower in fear and not be a factor in the battle at all.

RE: Different Set-up
The AH site has a couple of three map layouts that look interesting. They are three side-by-side with the long edges touching.

RE: Best tank for Set I
Haha, yeah Ian’s story about his “Renault Rush” army was pretty good.

San Diego, CA: AAM players?
I just started playing A&A Minis at GenCon SoCal and I’m looking for other players in the San Diego area. I actually live in Oceanside and I guess there are a few AAM players up here at Pair o’ Dice but they don’t play at the shop, they just play at home.
I work down in San Diego (right across from MCAS Miramar) and I’d be willing to drive to play a few times per month.

RE: Defensive Fire Questions
I gathered from previous posts that the Tiger disrupts the soldier immediately however if I understand the defensive fire rules the soldier can take his defensive fire shot as the Tiger exits the hex so he isn’t actually in the soldier’s hex yet.

RE: Map Question
The plexi thing worked great at GenCon. My buddy suggested cutting the single large piece into three or four smaller pieces to make it easier to transport.

RE: RULES HELP!!!
The trick is to remember that the face-up Disrupted counters go away between rounds. I’ve had several times where one of my units ends up staying disrupted for five turns in a row because it kept getting fresh disrupted counters every turn but never got damaged. (Yes I got lucky and made a lot of cover rolls.)

RE: Has anybody tried playing just one allied country?
I’m trying to get a few more units for a Russian army. I played a good one last week that was mostly Russian but I had to add a 6-pounder and infantry that weren’t Russian. Now that I have a few more Russians from Set 2 (including a Guards T-34) I just need a few more singles and I’ll give it a whirl.

RE: MOD
Oh boy this is one of those topics where nobody is going to change anybody else’s mind.
I hadn’t thought about doing custom paint work on my minis but that’s an excellent idea. One of the things that keeps me away from games like Warhammer is having to paint an entire army from scratch. Doing some custom work on a few pieces is much more my speed. I’d suggest picking up some history books for ideas, or better yet books for plastic model builders are chock full of alternate paint schemes and markings.

RE: Different Set-up
Funny, we were talking about using more map tiles at GenCon. It seemed to me like a lot of battles began with all the units rushing to the objective and slugging it out at point-blank range and maybe having more room to manuever might change that.

RE: Best tank for Set I
I’m a fan of the KV-1 (and I beat a Tiger army with it to boot). Of course I don’t own a Tiger or a Croc and have not even played against a Croc yet.

RE: GenCon So Cal 2005 Convention: Axis & Allies Miniatures
This was my first GenCon and I had a blast. I didn’t get to play many AAM games since I chickened out on joining the tournies (sealed & constructed) but had fun playing league. Big thanks to David for playing against me at about 8am on Friday morning and helping me learn the game at the same time (since it was my first game ever).
I was heartened to see that a lot of the AAM players at the con were also just learning. I did pick up a Set II booster and got some nice additions to my Russian army. I already signed up for the 4-day pass for $35 for next year so I should get more than just four games played in the league next time.
All of the AAM players were really nice and we all helped each other out. The rest of my friends (including Jamie who flew out from Connecticut) are all D&D minis players so I found myself explaining AAM to them. My short version is “it’s like a cross between D&D minis and Squad Leader” which while not 100% accurate is good enough for a one sentence synopsis. I look forward to the AAM mod for Vassal and I’m sure I’m going to learn D&D minis on Vassal soon as well.
