If you really want to keep your options open build a naval base in central america.A fleet parked in sz 64 can reach Gib,New Zealand,Alaska,Hawaii,Nova scotia. You don’t need to be at war to do this.
Anyone ever tried this with succes?

Is a SBR against UK standard in your games G2 or G3?
G1 i use my STRB’s against the Royal Navy.
Most games i need my fighters and TB’s to kill UK ships in SZ 97 and land a few fighters/TB’s in Tobruk/Alexandria.
for a SBR against London i need at least 2 STRB’s (i buy navy G1 so i only have 2 STRB’s) and 2-3 fighters, otherwise the UK will intercept fighters and i’ll lose my bombers. By using my fighters G2 in SZ 97 i can’t do a SBR G2. If i to do a SBR G3, it’s actually too late.
Anyone else has this problem?
Hi,
I heard YG in his last YouTube video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rApYW9q7B1I ) talk about a German “Dark Sky” strategy with buying lots of bombers. Can anyone of you explain this strategy and tell me why (or why not) to do it?
@ABWorsham:
I bought 41 a few weeks ago, I soon will purchase one of these games. I’ll have both in time. But I’m training two sons in the game. Your thoughts?
Once you play 1940 E an/or P, you’ll never want to play 1941 or 1942 (at least for me). 1942 is however a good option, but the rules in 1940 a diffrent and there are more unit types. Im my gaming group, 1 player used to play the classic edition (from the 80’s) and the first few games he was confused with the new typical 1940 rules such as airbases, naval bases, bombing raids etc. If you teach your sons 1941, then 1942 and afterwards 1940 they will get confused too because of the variaty of rules.
OT: I say Europe. More diverse battles (land, air and naval) and more diverse nations.
But what if you attacked Paris with less-than-usual forces on purpose so you could get all three territories? If you don’t take Paris, you can send in the Italian units in Northern Italy to mop up!
G1
Attack Normandy with 3 inf, 1 art from Holland.
Attack Southern France with 2 mech inf from Western Germany and 1 tank from GSG and 1 ftr from Slovakia-Hungary.
Attack Paris with 1 inf, 1 art from Holland and 3 inf, 2 mech inf, 3 tanks from Western Germany and 2 tanks from GSG and 1 tac bomber from Poland. This gives you somewhat good chances of taking all three, and, like I said, Italy take finish off Paris if Ger doesn’t get it.
Never take Southern France as Germany on G1. You’ll probably lose the 3 IPC’s from Southern France because the French cruiser and destroyer are allowed to convoy.
You can take Normandy for 2 IPC’s (i never do it G1, always G2). If you attack Normandy G1 you’ll use 2 inf. and 2 artillery from the France battle. By doing so, you’re weaker in France and you’ll lose more units in France and probably 1 or two in Normandy. The 2 IPC’s you receive for Normandy are nothing if you lose 3-10 IPC’s in infantry, artillery and mec’s.
Has anyone of you ever tried to strafe France G1 and take France with Italy? I’m curious if this works (the Brits can land fighters in France if Germany doesn’t take it).
AC/DD/sub is a solid G1 buy even if he has no intention of doing Sealion. It cements the dominance of the German navy in the North Sea and forces UK to invest most of his first round buy into units that won’t see actual action until many rounds later.
I also like this purchase. This allows you to attack Russia G2 and take out the Russian sub wich in most cases will be in SZ 111, 112, 124 or 125. The new sub goes to SZ 125 to take away the NO for Russia. Also take out the Russian cruiser so it can’t block an amphibious assault.
G2 i purchase two transports so i have the option to land 6 land units in Leningrad G3.
If you keep your fleet in the Baltic sea, you can use these 3 transports to reinforce Norway, Finland, Leningrad, Baltic states etc. a fleet with a few transports is allways usefull.
Even if the US loses that battle, Japan will lose a lot of their fleet and the US can replace their ships much easier than Japan. So they can keep sending more warships out to finish off the Japanese fleet.
I think that’s a good strategy knp. Build up your fleet with warships and planes and go after Japan first. Fast enough to stop Japans economy from growing. Japan’s economy encreases faster than Germany’s economy, thats why you should go for Japan first (if Germany doesn’t do Sealion).
However, i don’t agree with you saying: “Losing your entire fleet is worse for the Japanese as for the Americans”.
I think it’s worse for the Americans to lose their fleet for a few different reasons:
This is why i agree with you when saying: “The US is the most difficult nation to play”. You should be extremely carefull with your units and can’t afford to make mistakes or take a gamble.
Hi!
There are strategies that involve attacking a strict neutral. The Allies (US/UK) can take Spain to make the US supply line towards Europe shorter. The Allies can also build an IC there and can fight its way liberating France to reach Rome and Berlin. You can only do this if the UK controls the Middle East and Africa. Otherwise Germany or Italy can take Turkey and take control over the Middle East (lots of NO’s for Germany/Italy).
The Axis can also attack strict neutrals (for extra money or an easy corridor towards the Middle East. If they do so, the US can take Chili, Argentinia, Venezuela (2 IPC’s each) so if the Axis decide to do so, make sure you attack as of the struct neutals you can, at least Sweden, Turkey and Spain. This way you prevent the Allies trom taking a bunch of free infantry and IPC’s. Also: make sure you attack it with force so you’ll have enough to take and hold it.
Most games i would not recomend you to attack a strict neutral, but you can use it as a suprise strike when your opponent doesn’t expect you to do so
good luck!
where can i find it? :?

Awesome! thanks a lot!
I’ve only played Global 1940 about 5 times but i’m looking forward to play this setup! Lots of new options to try!
I’ve ony played about 5 games by now, but here’s what i think:
There is no way you can say what is “best to do turn 1 -4” playing USA. Playing USA is verry hard in my opinion. You always have to wait and see what the Axis are doning, then decide what you need to purchase so you can make plans for an attack on maybe turn 4/5/6….
After Japans turn, study the board and ask yourself questions such as:
Things i miss in your stratey:
Things you could/should always do turn 1:
Correct me if i’m wrong :-D…
Also, please don’t criticize my grammar, i’m from Holland :-)
@CWO:
The OOB rules, for the sake of simplicity, don’t depict the historical Vichy / Free French split. Instead, they depict a kind of altermate-history scenario in which France continued to fight as a single (but greatly diminished) power on the Allied side, but with rule restrictions that reduce it to near-irrelevance.
I can see the point of eliminating the historical Vichy / Free French elements of WWII, since otherwise A&A would be much more complicated, but at the same time I disagree with the combination of rule restrictions that make France nearly irrelevant. I think that France can be made more interesting, without adding too many complications, by simply allowing it to collect income and build and mobilize units despite the fact that its capital has fallen (which is essentially what China is allowed to do). It could be, for instance, allowed to do so as long as the Allies are in control of London, or even allowed to do so without any such restriction.
This would be quite interesting! Give the French the same rules as China after Paris is taken so they can still collect for Arfica and Syria.
The downside to this rule would be that these rueles would not hurt the Germans or Japan but ony Italy. If the French can still collect 6 - 9 IPC’s each turn its impossible for the Italians to take some countries in Africa. The Italians already have a hard job to resist the UK. With even more French untis in Africa/Middle East its impossible for Italy to sustain themselves.
Definitely check the house rules forum. Oztea’s '41 set up is awesome, but it can be overwhelming! There are a ton of options firs turn for every country.
where can i find it? :?
some input for the top 10 list:
how does a submarine work: suprise strike, submerge, movement, doensn’t count as a blocker and: where they can or can’t move (Gibraltar vs. Danmark), can’t hit air units.
take friendly neutrals is a noncombat move, many players “attack” during combat move
convoy, many people get this wrong
kamikaze, may people get this wrong
Mongolia rule
turn sequence, especially scrambling and convoy, may people forget of do this in the wrong order. YG explained this verry well in the P-2 Runthrough video Germany during the combat movement phase:
use of airbase naval base extended movement. Many people think an aircraft can move 1 more if its on a carrier in a sea zone adjacent to a air base. Also: many people don’t know a ship must DEPART from a friendly naval base to extend the movement
planes may not land on newly taken spaces
AAA
SBR
use of bombers, and air battle. how many defending fighters can the defender use? how meny escorts can the atackers send? Do you need an airbase to intercept?
Hope this is helpfull…
For new players:
1. Germany
2. Japan
3. UK
4. USA
5. Russia
6. Italy
7. China
8. ANZAC
9. France
I think for new players it’s hard to play the Axis (Germany or Japan). They have lots of options, especially the fitst few rounds. For the more experienced players, playing the Axis will be quite easy.
for experienced players
1. USA
2. Russia
3. Germany
4. UK
5. Japan
6. Italy
7. ANZAC
8. China
9. France
For more experienced players it is hard to play the Allies i.m.o.
As the Allies you’ll have to wait and see witch side is doing best and base your purchases on what you think you need 2/3 turn later (especially USA). Playing the Axis is straight forward. You know what your options are and basicly just do the best you can to win the game a.s.a.p.
I don’t think Africa is a waste of time for Germany/Italy. But if the UK takes SZ 97, SZ 96 and Tobruk turn 1, it’s often verry hard to take terretories in Africa or the Middle East.
However, if you can take Egypt on I2/I3 Africa becomes quite important for the Axis. There is lots of money you can take away from the UK and lots of bonus in NO’s for both Germany and Italy.
Also: if you send Italian and/or German units into Africa or the Middle East, the Allies are forced to send troops into Africa/Middle East and builda factory to regain control. So the UK’s income won’t be spend on ground troops in London, fighters in Russia or Navy in Canada. This helpes Germany to go for Sealion or Barbarossa and delay an Allied invasion in Europe.
Italy can help Germany by distracting the UK and it’s income. However, when playing Italy, you always have to wait and see what you options are when your first turn comes around. You can never really make a plan when playing Italy. If Africa and the Med. is lost, you can always help Germany in Russia or defend against an Allied invasion.
Lots of options, so strategy is perfect i.m.o.
I have never land the fighter in Tobruk, only in Rome. I will land the Fighter in Tobruk next game and the TB in Rome, see if it pays off…
Also: i allways try to take out the UK Cruiser in sz 91 using just one sub. I know the odd’s are against me, but if i hit 1st round, the payoff is huge (and te sub survives :-D). In most cases it prevent the UK player from taking Tobruk 1st round.
I like Italy take Southen France but i think it depends on who Yugoslavia gets and what the UK player does
As germany i like to give Yugo to the Italians so i try to kill 3-4 Yugo’s and retreat to Romania. If this succeeds i take Bulgaria during NCM with Germany and take the 4 infantry. Turn 2 i can attack Greece with Germany using 5 inf. and 3 tanks. This way Italy can take Yugo turn 1 with 2 inf and 1 tank from Albania and 1 tank from Nothern Italy.
If i kill all 5 in Yugo and take it with Germany then Italy gets Bulgaria and Italay can take Greece turn 2. Germany then gets Southern France turn 2 in most cases…
I never take Southern France als Germany turn 1. I need all my ground troops in France so i don’t lose too much untis taking it (i won’t send plans because of te AAA). Somtimes i take both Normandy and France turn 1.
Who takes Southern France (Ger/It) is also depending on what the UK does turn 1, in most cases: sz. 97 (Taranto), sz 96 and Tobruk. If the UK player takes out sz 97, 96 and Tobruk then i attack the French Navy in sz 93 with my fleet in 95 and my bomber. I also take 2 inf. from Southern Italy with my transport and drop them in Southern France with 2 inf. and 2 art. from Northern Italy. Depending on how strong the UK player is Africa, i can reinforce Africa turn 2 using my transport and landing my fighters in Lybia.
Sometimes if the UK does not attack Tobruk and Germany does not havo Yugo, i still take Southern France as well als Yugo with Italy. In this case i will send my fighters to Tobruk as well as the forces in Lybia. During G2 the Luftwaffe mops up any left over British ships in sz 97 and 96 and land planes in Tobruk. On It2 you can attack Alexandria from Tobruk. Take your fleet and your transport to sz 98 (you own the naval base and if sz 98 its empty you can bombard with your cruiser). If Egypt is empty or weak you can even take both Egypt and Alexandria using your transport and air in Egypt. This way you collect up to 2 NO’s for Italy on It 2. This way Italy is collecting at least 18 and up to 27 IPC’s turn 2.
If Italy takes Southern France you can still built a factory in Yugo or Greece as Germany. This way you can still help the Italians with troops in the middele East/Africa and you can build navy.
I think that it’s Germany’s job to help the Italians in the med early in the game. Italy can be helpfull to the Germans and the defence of the mainland if it collects 25+ IPC’s. The only way Italy can be rich is by NO’s so they need Germany’s help. Germany also has NO in Egypt and the Middele east. If the Brits buy a factory in Egypt and/or Persia it might be difficult but it’s worth to try. Also: as long as the Italians are threatning Africa and/or the middle east, Britain wil build Units in South Africa of in Persia or Egypt (using a new factory). This way they can’t defend London (Sealion) and can build up forces against Germany.
This strategy works perfect for me. I almost never send Italians into Russia except for Caucasus from the south:)
