Since you are attacking from that SZ, Italy can scramble because it’s hostile, which means you can fly planes into that hostile SZ.

RE: UK Opening Strategy
Taking out SZ97 and SZ96 are crucial and easily obtainable.
Even with a german fighter on southern italy and the SZ 91 cruiser knocked out? I think your claim is very situational. I agree its crucial, but you can combine the India fleet with the SZ98 for a counterstrike into the med. I think it’s better, odd wise. I would want Italy buying navy instead of troops and transports. Losing the creditable threat of losing transports gives Italy a huge advantage on the Northern Africa/Egypt front.

RE: Scramble question regarding offensive players
You need to be more clear osu888.
Are we talking about an amphibious assault? Or no amphibious assault and no defending sea units? If there is no amphibious assault or sea units to defend, then no attack as been declared, thus, no scrambling. Then you can’t have your planes move on the combat phase.
The rules say that you can only attack zones that have occupied enemy territory/units in them, but is a special rule about scrambling that you can coast planes into friendly zones that may become hostile.

UK Opening Strategy
Is the suicidal attacks on Italy’s fleet obsolete? The only attack that’s somewhat viable is just moving a destroyer & fighter w/ tactical to get rid of a transport in SZ 96. An attack on SZ 97 (not assuming scramble with German Fighter) is a 50% chance, or if you steal a fighter from the cruiser attack on 96 it’s 80% chance. (With German Fighter) Taking it without 96 Fighter is 13% and with is 42%. Even if you do win those really shaky odds, the German Luftwaffe will burn your fleet to the bottom of the Med AND possible take shots at your landed bomber and fighter in Cyprus.
I’m I missing something here? Because I thought this game was more open minded about options, and this 2nd edition is way too restrictive. UK seems to only have the option of small attack on 96 and retreating the rest to 81.

RE: How do you keep Italy strong?
@Eggman:
Something else I’ve seen done on rare occasion is to make sure Germany takes Yugoslavia so that they can build an Air Base there to provide additional scramblers for SZ 97.
Geh… better to spend that on a MIC and support Italy with more ships in the Med. rather than waste money like that. Not that I have that problem, I always take Southern France. No reason to ever buy a AB in Yugo.

RE: Do you think Axis is overpowered?
Poor luck? Only if you make it so luck matters in the first place. Honestly I don’t split my planes anymore to attack UK ships 1st turn with Germany anymore, I just nail 110/109 and call it a day. My Battleship always survives, no chance of my planes dying. I’m not seeing where you can possibly have luck involved that would “doom” axis. :|

Interesting game. :-o

RE: The Japan Playbook
BTW Cow, you forgot to tally the USA +2 income because of Brazil.

RE: The Japan Playbook
Last night I did a J1 Pearl Harbor, man… that was a terrible idea lol. USA slammed me hard with it’s fleet and planes from mainland, wiped my SZ6 and Carolina fleets. Had like 1 Carrier left with 1 plane.

RE: Do you think Axis is overpowered?
Would you rather just play OOB Jennifer? Or do you feel that these Alpha’s have actually had a purpose? If the game has flipped a 180 in the other direction in terms of balance, why even keep the changes? Shouldn’t you go back to the OOB and rethink the whole concept? Instead of having lots of options for attacks for the Axis, we have this POS cookie cutter 1 way street method of playing. :|

RE: Do you think Axis is overpowered?
The UK player as been trying to rebuild it’s fleet to help USA land troops/defend on Western Europe “when” they get into the war. Italy pretty much took half of India and UK is trying to come back from the South. India is busy with Japan’s massive move against China, which China usually ends up with near no IPC. Anzac is always worthless, and can not build up to Japanese size fleet even if you waited 10 turns with money islands.
Can’t reinforce Gib because of the German/Italy subs sitting in the Med. (Germany took Southern France.) USA can’t land in Brazil either b/c of this. USA has to dump so much money in the East that Japan can do whatever it wants.
I’ve played every Alpha and out of box, this seems the most unbalanced imho.

RE: Do you think Axis is overpowered?
Wait, ghr2, you’re telling me that we went through 3 Alpha’s to get to a 10-16 ally bid??? :|
Not impressed. Surprised more people aren’t really interested in this topic, I thought Alpha 3 is Axis favored, mabye that’s just me and ghr2.

Do you think Axis is overpowered?
Not sure if my group of players is godawful, or if the new alpha 3 is just that Axis favored. In our games we played with A.3, Germany forgoes UK, (why would they, bring USA and Russia into the war), and just tanks/planes/infantry to Moscow. Italy captures Africa and is powerhousing UK and subs keep USA away. Japan attacks russia/china and keeps USA out of the war, Russia takes it up the rear for 3 turns with no resistance (how can UK help?) GG Russia and Germany and Italy are now taking all of USA money while Japan explodes.
Anybody else agree with this turn of events with A.3? :x

RE: How do you keep Italy strong?
How to keep Italy strong? Have it take France.
-
RE: Japan in the Med?
I approve of this Kamikaze.
Things to note, UK has in many games, pulled it’s fleet out of the Med. to go to India, could cause some problems with this strat.

RE: Japan & Germany Turn 3
I thought you couldn’t blitz through neutrals?
-
RE: Japan & Germany Turn 3
You guys make valid points. Here’s the catch 22 on the whole thing though, it takes so damn long for the USA to get troops on to europe, that… by the time there’s a train of TT that takes 3 turns to get there, Germany is finishing up Russia.
Think about it though, USA can effectively be on Europe, turn 4, taking Spain and Brazil. You have to think about, in the long run, having USA presence is worth the extra troops axis picks up. But they are just infrantry, it’s not like they get fighters or tanks for taking them.
Right :?

RE: Japan & Germany Turn 3
3. It is not bad if you are fine with the other true neutrals falling into axis hands because you attacked spain
Is it a viable tactic people here on the boards use?

RE: Japan & Germany Turn 3
Way out of position with Japan?? You just sacked India with extra income to slam back east, it’s only 1 turn away to the money islands.
I’ve done pleanty of Sealions in the boxed version with Germany turn 3, what changed to make turn 3 sealion hard??
Is it good strat to have America take Spain for a 2 turn transport chain?
Can America take Suriname before @ war b/c it’s dutch?
