    As a child I played a lot with toysoldiers and tanks. Indoor during wintertimes, outside in the garden during summertimes. I could not get enough of it. I even came up with some simple rules that made it all a kind of wargame.

    I did find the original first edition A&A board game in the eighties.
    To me, it was as if I had found a treasure!

    The first time I played the game with a friend, we started around seven o'clock in the evening, played all night until 6 o'clock in the morning. It was absolutely amazing. I've been playing the WW2 variants regularly since then. At first with friends and wife, later with my own children. The funny thing about that was that they had no trouble with topography at school.

    And what I finally wanted to share. For a number of years I've worked on my own version, this time in a modern setting.

      Thank you for this well substantiated reply. It gives me a lot to consider.

      The whole idea of a ‘time’ came from the situation how I play AA 1940 Global these days with friends. Once in say two weeks, mostly on Sundays we meet and play. The game is placed on a large table at the attic. In this way it’s possible to play a longer period of time.

      Preparing the next moves at home, before the continuing battle continues after a week or two. Therefore I came up with the idea to create a Journal or Log. I wanted to keep track on the game progress. And therefore it felt necessary to find a way to relate game events to a ‘real’ date…

      It keeps me bothering and busy, questioning the real versus game time.

      I like the idea, “like a rubber band where its stretched in some points and shorter in others”.

      However, according to Larry Harris’s Designer’s Notes A&A Europe 1940 2nd edition, Larry writes;
      “From a game design point of view, I’d have to bridge some spans of history. Spring 1940 through December 7, 1941, represented a year and a half. I wanted certain historic milestones to occur in the game and they had to occur in their proper order. I quickly decided that the game would have to start with the Battle of France. France had to fall, and fast. The problem was, France was no small, token nation, and its military was first class. In June 1940, the British and other remnants of the Allied armies had just evacuated Dunkirk, leaving behind tons of equipment. I decided to begin the game at that moment.”

      Also according to the manual,
      A&A Europe 1940 2nd edition, the Political situation, United States, page 37.
      “However, if it’s not yet at war by the Collect Income phase of its third turn, the United States may declare war on any or all Axis powers at the beginning of that phase.”

      Keeping in mind the above, I came to the following solution.
      The first 3 Turns seems tot take about 7 months per turn. From turn 4 and following up turns, these turns can be about 4 months per turn. The so called ‘rubber band’ (effect) from Larry.

      Combining and interpreting the different input, I come up with this scheme:

      Turn 1 (7 months):
      Month 1. Mar. 21, 1940 - Apr. 20, 1940
      Month 2. Apr. 21, 1940 - May. 20, 1940 (May 10th, Invasion France.)
      Month 3. May. 21, 1940 - Jun. 20, 1940 (May 26th, Dunkirk.)
      Month 4. Jun. 21, 1940 - Jul. 20, 1940
      Month 5. Jul. 21, 1940 - Aug. 20, 1940
      Month 6. Aug. 21, 1940 – Sep. 20, 1940
      Month 7. Sep. 21, 1940 - Oct… 20, 1940

      Turn 2:
      Month 8. Oct. 21, 1940 - Nov. 20, 1940

      It’s another and interesting way to approach this issue indeed.

      Something else I sometimes seem to forget, although I’d like to think about it otherwise. Axis & Allies is a great game. I enjoy playing it since the very first edition in the eighties. And although I really would like to see Axis & Allies as to be a WW2 simulation like board game and sometimes even feels like one. In my opinion the truth however is, it is not and never wasn’t meant to be one either.
      In the time scheme I’ve shared I have only taken into account, the ww2 events in relation to the months and seasons in a year.
      Things are getting a bit awkward when you try to involve the movement of units as well. A Liberty transport ship wasn’t a very fast ship. But even a slow vessel like a Liberty class ship under ‘normal’ conditions, didn’t need a couple of months to cross the Atlantic.

      And this is where I would like to think about the rubber band approach. Where I can enlarge the feeling of a ww2 simulation game, I’d like to tighten the rubber band a bit and give it all a more simulation like feeling. On issues like ‘travel time versus distance’ maybe it’s possible to loosen up the rubber band a bit.

      Movement through former occupied land and sea zone, during non combat movement phase:

      I could need some help on this for me and my group of players, mind troubling issue.

      A situation which occurs mainly in sea zones, but/ and could also occur on land territory.

      Situation on land:
      Is it possible to move a tank through an, in this turn during combat phase contested territory?
      I.e.: Germany occupies Poland and Belarus. Russian units still occupy Eastern Poland. It’s my turn.
      During the Combat Move Phase I decide to attack Eastern Poland with half of my tank forces from Poland. I win. Eastern Poland becomes German.
      Now I want to make my Non Combat moves.
      In Poland I have the other tank reserves, which didn’t participate in the attack.

      Question: Can I move these units from Poland during Non Combat moves, through the former hostile now occupied by my own forces territory (Eastern Poland), to reinforce, Belarus which was taken already by my forces in a previous turn?

      Situation at sea:
      Say, in SZ 113, I have an UK fleet of surface ships (skip submarines and transports ;o) )
      SZ 114 is an occupied SZ. This SZ is controlled by an enemy German Cruiser.
      During the combat movement phase, I decide to attack the contested SZ 114 with only the half of my fleet. I roll the dice and win. SZ 114 is no longer controlled by a hostile surface ship, or any other hostile ship for that matter.
      Now I want to make my Non Combat moves.
      In SZ 113 I have some remaining surface ships (used only half of my fleet during the attack on SZ 114).

      Question: Can I move (non combat movement) these fleet units in this same turn from SZ 113, through SZ 114 (where no longer a hostile is present), and into SZ 115?

      Can anyone clarify this issue for me, and where I might or could find it in the manual?

      I admire your work in building this game (the boardgame) and follow the progress of your design with great interest. I know how hard it can be at some moments because I went about a same course myself. But what I personally really can’t understand are the colors that were used. And by that I mean Are the colors of the units and the colors used on the gameboard. Perhaps it is a matter of taste. But they are way to bright, almost like candy. Why did you choose these color preferences above a more softer more serious looking color.

      I don’t want to offend you in any way. Absolutly not! But I’m wondering.

      I’m from Holland. Maybe that explaines a lot.

      I was the UK power in the mentioned game 😉

      So, to simplify. If we consider both scrambled Messerschmitt to become seaplanes. It becomes quite clear!
