I’ve never seen a game where the axis won when they don’t do Pearl. Whoever is playing US would have to be a newb or a bonehead not to capitalize.

RE: Agressive and pretty unorthodox R1 Strategy: Saving Egypt.
If the German player does choose to attack Egypt G1, he’d only be able to bring one fighter into the battle, not two.
Assuming you take out Ukraine. You’re strat is already too dependant on risky roles. Winning the Ukraine fight is far from a given. I guess if you don’t win it you could obviously opt not to land the fighter in Egypt.
Don’t get me wrong, you should try it. It will throw a player off if he hasn’t seen it before. It could win you a couple games, just don’t expect it to become a standard move.

RE: Agressive and pretty unorthodox R1 Strategy: Saving Egypt.
We used to use this strat in Revised. It worked for awhile until the German player (which was me) decided to attack. It’s not that hard of a fight to win considering 2 inf, 2 tanks, 2 figs and a bomber can fight it. It’s even riskier in 42 because the destroyer defense has been reduced to a 2.
I don’t understand the Ukraine and Norway attacks either. I see a lot of people favor them on here but I don’t understand them. Doesn’t this just thin out Russia to the breaking point by round 3?

RE: Can friendly's ride in other teams transports?
Thanks guys. I wish I had known about this sooner. This is going to come in handy. British guys are going to use US transports to land in Europe. That’s bound to save some time and ipcs.

RE: One minor map change that would make AA42 (and AAR) gameplay much better IMO.
This would be interesting to play out. Something would have to be done with the UK navy off Australia or else they could just take it. Maybe putting two inf on the island would be a deterrent. I imagine it would fall to America whenever they felt like taking it out, since they can outspend JP by 12 ipcs. If Japan sends all it’s navy there then Russia and UK are laughing. It would be nice to have more options in the Pacific but I still think it’s not enough to threaten America and would only distract Japan.

Can friendly's ride in other teams transports?
This came up in a game I played on the weekend. My friend put a german inf in a JP trans. In the ten years I’ve been playing I’ve never seen anyone do this. Not in person, not on Facebook A&A and it wasn’t in the rulebook. Is this a legal move?

RE: Variations of set-up
I know after the first round the game can vary, I was just tired of the Japs killing the Hawaiian Island fleet every first round and having the same pieces to work with, just an alternate set-up would perhaps make the game feel fresh and even more fun setting up the game. I know everyone on this website will hate me saying this but setting up RISK is more exciting with the random assignment of territories, each game is completely different.
This version is only a few months old and it has all new naval pricing, a new boat, different initial naval set ups, new BR rules, cheaper bombers. Those changes alone make it radically different than revised. Add in the dice roles and you have no idea what round two is going to look like.

RE: Variations of set-up
Why would you play the same way the first round every time?

RE: Playing as Japan
Sounds like you’re playing passive Allied forces WTFchris, or ones that always do heavy KGF.

RE: Playing as Germany
Anybody have solid numbers on SZ2 strike odds? Roughly calculated I’m guessing it’s 25% that the German fighter lives. I think, in general, this is an excellent attack for Germany if the fighter survives. But if the fighter dies, it may be debatable whether it was worth it, given that those 2 planes could have been used elsewhere and the Kraut sub could have gone for the defenseless transport. The 25-30% chance that Germany gets the BB without losing any planes makes this eminently tempting.
Anybody aware of a web-based calc for the new rule-set?
The only problem with that is the US destroyer and a plane and bomber can take out the sub. It would be a sittin duck. If I wasn’t going after the battleship, that sub could go for the cruiser by Gibralter, that way you don’t risk losing a plane. Or I wonder if it would be wise to try a conservative approach and keep the subs together for a round two attack. You could get three subs and a whole lot of planes for a round two attack in the Atlantic.

RE: Allied Strategy Discussion
Germany doesn’t have a force to amass. There’s two or three germany inf surrounding Cauc and Mosc and nothing immediately behind it. He’s spent so much on navy. He’s got a carrier, a cruiser, 2 destroyers and two transports in the Med, plus a baltic navy. He is up 54 ipc’s. I imagine he’s going to buy 8 men and 6 tanks, but who knows. It’s a lot of money but he’s just buying stuff he should have by now already.
I normally do a KGF, but with the new rules, KJF is more tempting. It seems to be working. I’ll let you guys know the outcome.

RE: Playing as Germany
We played a game last night where Russia tried the 2 sub move again. I was Germany again so I tried ten men and one fighter. This worked really well. His attacked failed and later, two UK fighter missed, and two Russian fighters missed. That navy survived 3 attacks :). After that I just bought land stuff and Russia surrendered around round 5. Having seven fighters was nice as Germany. I think I might forego Navy in the future.

RE: Playing as Germany
We’ve played a handful of games now with 42 and an almost always standard rd1 move is to take out the British navy with a sub, plane and bomber. It almost always works. No one has tried the Russian attack on Norway yet but I understand a lot of people on here favor that attack. I think it’s crazy as it’s still hard to win, and you’re losing a plane and armor in the process.
Getting into Africa right away is a must. The new strategy of a rd 1 russian sub build off caucus can cause Germany huge problems. I don’t know the answer to that move yet.
If West Russia has roughly 6 pieces or less than that’s definitely attackable.
I think the AC build in the baltic is even more feasible in 42, if you still have that navy (since Russia can take it out now with one fighter). So if you get to keep it on you turn it really slows down UK and puts them on D right away.
In summary, I favor -
-attack the UK navy/Russian sub with 1 sub, 1 bomber, 1 fighter
-attack West Russia if it’s vulnerable. Also caucus, if it’s empty/very weak for some reason
-attack karelia with whatever you feel like. Should be an easy fight.
-If you still have Norway, leave some guys there to protect your bomber from the UK transport off Canada.
-take out UK Cruiser with 3 planes
-take out UK destroyer off Egypt with battleship.
-take Egypt with 2 guys, 2 tanks and 2 fighters.NCM -moves subs in the baltic out, move guys from Algeria up, move stuff towards russia, make sure France is defended adequately.
Buy an AC if you still have Baltic navy and 8 inf. If you don’t, buy all men.

RE: Allied Strategy Discussion
I already have East Indies. I took it last round. (We’re on round 6). I’ve spent almost all my income on the pacific as the US. Germany has a lot of boats but they only have three tanks on the board right now.

RE: Allied Strategy Discussion
Thanks for the advice Romolus but here’s where I’m torn. If I abandon Island Hopping than Japan will be uncontested. At least where I am, I’m forcing him to think defensively as Japan. I’m two spaces from Africa, Two spaces from India, and one space from all his islands. Maybe I should skip the east indies factory and focus on a mass landing in africa? Land in algeria and Italian east africa or Egypt. Actually I could probably do both.

RE: Allied Strategy Discussion
I’m in the middle of a game where I was really putting the hurt to the axis for the first four rounds but suddenly he broke out and is making some huge money this turn with both powers. I still have an Indian IC, and a huge US Navy that’s just started island hopping, but I’ve lost africa for the time being and he built a med navy and a baltic navy as germany. Russia is surrounded but with minimal forces.
This was my first attempt at a KJF. The question I’m posing is, can the allies overcome a big economic advantage from the axis? Is it better to be aggresive or patient when this happens?
-
RE: IPC question
It’s better to just write your money down, especially if you’re playing one on one. It can get messy trying to keep IPC’s organized for all three allies. Writing income down is quicker and is evidence of purchases in case there are any disputes later. Our group stopped using money before 42 even came out because we realized the pointlessness of it.

RE: Allied Strategy Discussion
A friend tried this on me but he used two subs. I thought he was done for and I might have been able to beat him if I bought just land forces but I went with an AC in the Baltic in a bid for defense and to try and get back into Africa. I even botched the RD1 attack on the atlantic UK navy and he kept his BB. Still I did get back into Africa by about round 4. OUr game wound up being epic, over 15 rounds but eventually Japan was taken out because he always throws everthing he can at Japan (and somehow it usually works for him). I even had India as Japan, and Caucus as Germany but not on the same round. It was a crazy game.

RE: Should I buy AA42?
I’d bring your revised board as well. The 42 map is terrible. I don’t know what they were thinking when they designed it. Borders are too dark, important territories are too small.

RE: Don't get how Germany can handle UK and Russia with the bombing…
Couple things, first, when I said you don’t have to think to much, was in regards to AA50 and how bonus income is obtained. It tells you right on the card. It’s saying do these things to win the game, when before you had to figure out these strategies on your own.
Secondly Gamerman, you called yourself a boaster in more than one post on the previous page. I’m just going by your own words.
