      Very interesting, Mr. Marc.  We have some friends here in Kansas City that work/teach/study at the Leavenworth staff college and we were just discussing a few weeks ago the German Staff College Kriegspiele Game and how these original 19th c. simulations are the origin of modern wargaming, with many of the modern conventions reflected, such as dice, complex ruleset, modular setup, special rules/exceptions, piece types, attempted realism, etc.  The professor in our group spoke about how he uses modern wargames to teach modern warfighting and what games/rules they emphasize, he’s basically a professional gamer (jealous!).

      I find it interesting that many of the older Jules Verne style early wargames, like the one you describe, required some measure of dexterity in order to fire at your enemy as opposed to dice based games that simulate the hits/misses/damage.  Real naval gunfire has some element of timing/patterning/watching your misses in order to zero onto your target, there are some different considerations than trying to fire a pog or something.  I think we would hate to lose to people who are simply better shots than we are rather than better generals.

      I’m actually trying to SIMPLIFY the game by reducing the number of powers to four.

      Often, simplified rules are the most complex to explain, especially to dick heads.

      @CWO:

      On the subject of Star Trek, here’s an odd news item: the first Star Trek beer to be licenced by the franchise.Â

      http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/story/2013/04/27/calgary-vulcan-beer.html

      Alas, it’s Vulcan rather than Romulan and it’s amber instead of blue – but I guess one has to start somewhere.

      We have green beer here.  I’d wager we could add some orange coloring and make it more vulcan…if we can add green, why not orange?

      @Flashman:

      Russia (or indeed any Allied power) can activate Romania at any time by moving in an infantry.

      Agreed, I was just stating that if the CPs attack it the Romanians are also activated, so it isn’t like you are missing out on those units until Russia activates it.  It can be a barrier territory with Austria too weak to attack & hold.

      You can evacuate a contested tt, but not use such a move to attack. The tt you move to must contain one of your own units (allies do not count).

      It says that in mobilize units, if you have a tt with other land units but no infantry, you must demote one unit to an infantry to fulfill the “minimum 1 inf” criteria.

      It is sensible to enforce this after movement as well if you spot the enemy has made such an error.

      I’m not 100% on Germany’s borders, but with Hanover in there I can’t see Ruhr bordering Berlin.

      It’s possible that Ruhr borders Lorraine (following Diplomacy), the Munich-Silesia border is an assumption again based on the Dip board.

      The Kiel borders I’ve posted on elsewhere.

      @Clyde85:

      one of the few recordings of Hitler were he isn’t trying to shout the crazy out of his lungs

      Another one is a brief audio clip included in the Stalingrad episode of the series “The World At War”, in which we hear Hitler making an after-dinner speech casually announcing that his troops had successfully occupied most areas of a certain city on the Volga named after Stalin, and that only a few mopping-up operations would be needed to overcome the remaining pockets of resistance.  It dates from around October 1942, I think.

      Prefer company of heroes 1, because COH2 takes away too much stuff, and gives not enough back, and seems no different in terms of graphics and gameplay from COH1, so What has COH2 given us, apart from Russians, and general characters? Nothing, less units, less factions, same graphics, The game failed. :-(

      Self confidence is everything, because if you find yourself alone, you can sill enjoy life.

      The ability to have solitude as your primary state of existence will serve you in good stead in any situation in which you find yourself.

      Good point.

      The only occasion where you are permitted to retreat only some units is when the attack involves an amphibious assault (land units attacking from a transport can never retreat - all others still may).

      So:

      1. Not typically, unless all the land units are from an amphibious assault.

      2. Yes, except amphibiously assaulting troops are left behind to fight to the death.

      Thanks Clyde. Really was a big event and the town getting involved too, is great.  Working WW2 vehicles and the noise makes for a realistic experience.

      @LHoffman:

      I used to be interested in making an Axis & Allies type game for Star Trek during the Dominion War, but haven’t thought about it much for about 6 years (since high school). I still have all the materials and even made a map (based on the Star Trek Atlas) on the computer, but I sort of abandoned it. It was getting very complex.
      Simplicity is the key to a great game and more is not always better.

      Did you ever play Birth of the Federation for the PC?  I usually played as the Romulans, but the war-like Federation would always be the last I had to conquer…Even on easy, that game was very difficult…you had to put A LOT into tech and security, which usually meant my fleet was fodder (especially if I left random events on…Borg and Crystalline entity woudl devour me). until much later in the game.  I would love to see a sequel to this game…

      Loved reading about generals I knew in a different context, but am aware is not WW2.

      If you guys havent read this list it is hilarious!!!  :lol:
      Here are a few of my favorites in no particular order.

      Not allowed to play “Pulp Fiction” with a suction-cup dart pistol and any officer
      Not allowed to add “In accordance with the prophesy” to the end of answers I give to a question an officer asks me
      Not allowed to add pictures of officers I don’t like to War Criminal posters
      May no longer perform my now (in)famous “Barbie Girl Dance” while on duty
      Not allowed to let sock puppets take responsibility for any of my actions
      Not allowed to let sock puppets take command of my post
      Not allowed to ask for the day off due to religious purposes, on the basis that the world is going to end, more than once
      “Napalm sticks to kids” is not a motivational phrase
      Not allowed to trade military equipment for “magic beans”
      Not allowed to sell magic beans during duty hours
      Not allowed to quote “Dr Seuss” on military operations
      Not allowed to yell “Take that Cobra” at the rifle range
      Not allowed to quote “Full Metal Jacket “ at the rifle range
      An order to “Put Kiwi on my boots” does not involve fruit
      An order to “Make my Boots black and shiny” does not involve electrical tape
      May not pretend to be a fascist stormtrooper, while on duty
      May not wear gimp mask while on duty
      May not bring a drag queen to the battalion formal dance
      Must not use military vehicles to “Squish” things
      If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it

      The list goes on and is one of the funniest things I have ever read, link below

      @special:

      Another thing about USA’s help against Italy that bugs me is… shouldn’t they be helping out UK instead of finishing the Italians?

      You are right, the US’s main focuse in this scenario should be to liberate London and as fast as possible. However, that said, I think sending a token ground force (maybe 2 transports worth of units, any combo) with the initial fleet and a few air units to back up the Brits in the Med. at this point is a good idea. If nothing else it settles the issue of whether the Italians can wear down the Brits and forces the Italians(and by extension the Germans) to stay bottled up in Europe. Once the US does liberate london, then the UK can use its position in N. Africa to launch a number stinging attack on the Euro-Axis under belly. This would also allow the African positions to start sending reinforcments to India.

      Uzo is the Greek version.

      Thanks for clearing that up FMG  :-D Though I would still rather use Red wine for Italy, there are already so many harsh liquours on the list sambucca seems a bit extream.

      Can anyone think of an acceptable beer for the Soviet Union?
