Actually the 1930s was filled with such vid thoughts on the topic and it was assumed that in case of war all powers would resort to he use of such weapons; H.G. Well’s The Shape of Things to Come was filled with air bombardment filled with Chemical Weapons. Even though such a weapon existed (in Primitive form) as early as 1917 it was never used. Some have thought that Hitlers own expierence being gased in the first war had something to do with his own reluctence to use it as well as his own fear of national level retaliation. Small uses did ocure in ethiopia and chinia however and the use of smoke (yes it is is classified as a Chemical) was common throughout the war.

RE: Marines
How about coupling a mech Infantry (which in this case represent AMTRACs) with a Marine which then when together on an Ampibious attack can do so at a with combined stgenth of 3. That would make Marines worth the 4 IPCs to purchase I think. :-D

RE: 70th Anniversary - Invasion of Norway & Denmark

Fist Impressions
Just got the game yesterday
Map - Well pretty nice (Even though mine was a lttle messed up on the fold line on one map board) largly a blown up version from the orginial A&A Pacific game board, Mexico, more of Canada, Russia and Alaska was nice to see but no Panama Canal (hope to see that in the Europe 1940 Boad) the canal was a Jap target more then once. Another nice point every thing was more realalic placed on the map Wake is now equal to Hawaii and not north of. But wheres Papua New Guinea on the map? Its on the old but gone on the new.
Units - a little beef, here not as nice scupts as in the past seems flaten in my set, and wheres a B-29 much more Iconic in the Pacific then anywhere else.
Game system
excelent as expceted now big but:Marines, why were they left out I thought the unit and rule from the original were good enough
The set up, would have been nice to inclde a mid 42 set up. -
70th Anniversary - Invasion of Norway & Denmark
After a long wait the war in the west begins when Germany invades Norway and Denmark on April 9th; Denmark fell in 12 hours. Funny thing was the allies were ready to move into Norway there self. Thus the fight in Norway is joined quickly on both land and at sea. This was the first battle to be fought in all three spheres (air, land, and water) at the same time at the same level of intenisty. Organized fighting continued until June 10th 1940 making Norway the nation to resist German occupation the longest of all those to fall (62 Days)

Armed Medical Corpsmen?
What would be the chance to see a Navy Corpsman armed with a pistol? I know in Europe the red cross on a person was geneally respected but in The Pacific not so much.

RE: Best World War II movie?
well many good ones so far.
I have to say that well Tora Tora Tora was good nothng beats the visual effect of seeing a bomb plowing into the Airzona and see trapped saliors in the Oklahoma as the water overtakes them. So Pearl Harbor is one of my Fav, minus the whole Battle of Britian BS.
Speaking of which another Favorite Battle of Britain

RE: The role of the british
No matter what the Brits in India have a long road ahead just trying to stay alive and marshalling troops (Mainly Infantry and Artillery), if the Japanese decide that its there time to go down with a full force effort there wont be much to stop them at the start of the game. The CBI was a pain in the neck theater filled with allies sitting on ther duffs (Chinia) and poor resource allocation, (the UK Continued to send Indian troops to the Middle East, North Africa and Itally up to 1943!) The UK player is going to have to get use to Defending and not attacking right up to the end.

RE: Pacific 1940 review copy has arrived
The US Pacfic Fleet had 8 Battleships, 12 Crusiers and roughly 100 Destroyers & 50 Subs spread out through the Pacfic, though the BBs and Crusiers where generally kept togther as a battle force. Now that I have seen the actual numbers I agree with them whole hartedly as well as starting them on the US West Coast. The US Navy stuck with the last of the War Plan Orange Ideas as best as best they could. Those old Four Stacker destroyers were out dated hold overs from WW1 and were in fleet reserve till FDR “Leased” them to Britian as part of Lend lease.
So then, will anybody come up with different Starting Set-ups for different dates other the 1940 one?

RE: Pacific 1940 review copy has arrived
Just to keep hammering on this alittle here is an article in Wikipedia on the US Pacific Fleet in May 41:
“Until May 1940, this unit was stationed on the west coast of the United States. During the summer of that year, as part of the U.S. response to Japanese expansionism, it was instructed to take an “advanced” position at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Long term basing at Pearl was so strongly opposed by the commander, Admiral James O. Richardson, that he personally protested in Washington. Political considerations were thought sufficiently important that he was relieved by Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, who was in command at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor.”
There was a reason for Peral harbor the US fleet was considered a BIG threat to Janapese ambitions that was why the effort was made to take it out.

RE: Pacific 1940 review copy has arrived
The US did have a H^&* of a Pacific Fleet even in 40, though it was movong from San Diego to Hawaii, Those Battleships at Peral were not new having been built betweem 1910-1917 and with 10 new fast Battleships the US has always had a strong Navy as the first line of defense.

RE: Pacific 1940 review copy has arrived
ANZACs were more common to wear a bush had than a Helmet, But if you want to get speific down to uniformes then the British should have a few Siks (SP?) with Turbans then as well :) No the typical Tommy (or Digger if you prefer) as molded does the job well.
As to the difference in IC units I would ask if anybody still has there A&A game from the 80’s? I still have mine and the IC’s then were white so I will just use them to mark the difference.
One thing I miss see in the game is the Panama Canal not so important in this game but in the combined way vey Important.
And how real is that set up when it comes for the Americans? There is virtiually no US Pacific fleet how true is this?

Eurpean Aircraft Carriers
Does anybody play with Aircraft Carriers in AA Europe?
Ignored in Set up and too big of an investment to be bought in game when land forces need as much as they can get and with the main Axis naval force in the Med bottled up this unit seems lost, even though Aircraft Carriers played a small but important role in this theater. see what others think now on the topic.

German first move strategy
Ok, I sat down to play out Barbarossa the other day, not ant entire game of game of A&A Europe but just that first important move for the German player. The first points to keep in mind is that you will lose troops accept that fact and don’t let it hinder your judgment. Secondly, though you can mass considerable firepower against the Russians it is not always the best move because the Russians can counter attack on their move with a still dangerous force.
Purchase with a mind that you will make up he majority of your loses. Buy 6 Infantry (18 IPCs) and 3 tanks (15 IPCs) use the remaining 8 to buy a sub for that “other” war. The extra 12 should be used to either store or build a new fighter.
Organize your forces before you move in your mind. The break down of forces goes sup-thing like this, in Poland you have:
6 Infantry
2 tanks
1 artillery
1 fighter
In Hungary you have:
3 infantry
1 artillery
1 tank
In Rumania you have:
3 infantry
1 tank
In Finland you have:
3 Infantry
In air units you have:
2 fighters in Germany
1 bomber in GermanyThe Fin’s usually send 2 Infantry into Vyborg, don’t worry about Karelia yet, move 2 infantry from Norway in the non-combat portion of your turn to fortify this spot. Though you might be tempted to use the fighter located there (Norway) it is best to leave it be for now.
Now create Army Group North for the drive into the Baltic states. This force should consist of 2 Infantry, an artillery, a fighter, from Poland and the bomber from Germany, against 3 Infantry in the Baltic states. Chances are here you will lose 1 Infantry perhaps 2 saving the artillery unit, meanwhile destroying the Russians.
Create Army group Center for the drive into East Poland. This force should consist of 2 Tanks, 2 fighters, and 1 Infantry, against 4 infantry in East Poland. YOU WILL lose an Infantry as well as possibly a tank in this battle but eliminate the Russians. Don’t worry you will regain the 2 tank advantage the next turn from The coming from Hungary. In the non-combat phase move the remaining 3 Infantry from Poland forward return the fighters home to Poland. The likely counter-attack should come Belorussia at 4 Infantry and a tank. You should bounce this attack right off with little loss perhaps an Infantry which should bear the brunt of this attack. After which the road to Moscow will be open.
Create Army Group South with 2 Infantry and artillery and 1 Infantry and a tank from Rumania into Bessarabia against an infantry and tank. Loss here should be light again an infantry or two. The 4 Infantry and 1 Artillery in Ukraine will give you the greatest amount of worry but the country attack here should be repulsed too with heavier losses.
SO that’s what I think will get you going on the right road to winning in Russia.
