      I haven’t looked at the other brackets but I suspect we’re behind. I’ve been busy as well. If you don’t mind I’d like another crack at the Dutchman. If you want we can still continue this one outside of the tourney….I’m not so sure I could overcome the horrible J1 and your Russsians are poised for the offensive.

      Power is back and it looks like the fans and dryers will be out shortly so my main rig should be up by Friday.  I will try to post from the laptop tonight.

      For a little water I have enough cleanup to last until rapture. Still, it is only a small blip compared to what others lost.

      Why doesn’t the math work both ways?  What I mean by that is if you steepen the curve with your attack hits to get the “average” hits instead of the “expected” hits why doesn’t the same rule apply when calculating the enemy defense hits?

      That would make your estimate a lot more conservative.

      I does do the same with defense hits. It is just that in the scenario he mentioned there was only 1 unit so the odds are simple - 33%. If there were more units in defense you would have to do the same thing. However, generally there are more attacking units than defending units, because the attacker would not do a battle that he would lose. So, this makes the number of hits the defender gets roughly the average since the attacker almost always has => the defender units.

      Just joking and not sure my joke is understandable (it id difficult for me to make a joke in English)!

      My point is: in A&A it is impossible to move “secretly” units in order to place them for a surprise strike. Only way of modelling something like a surprise strike is allowing combat move to be made as the powers were still at peace and then… in the combat phase declaring the state of war starting to roll dice. Even so I believe it is really difficult to obtain a surprise.

      Yeah, it is impossible to make surprise attacks the only surprise Japan can bring is when it will attack.

      I’ve read once about a variation on Classic that allowed for tactical surprises: you’d need 2 boardgames, each for 1 player and a 3rd player acting as referee. You’d only know the location of enemy units were adjacent to yours or if you sent fighters on recon missions to SZs/territories. The moves of both players were simultaneous: you’d make your combat moves together then the referee would inform each player of the number of enemies for each battle.

      In order to collect full income from a territory/island adjacent to a convoy zone the zone must be free of enemy subs/surface warships, correct ?

      sz19 is adjacent to 4 income producing territories with a total IPC value of 9. Does that mean , with the requiste number of units, one could deny the owner of the terriories 9 IPCs?

      If a sz borders 2 territories one axis the other allied, and the sz contains ships/subs for both, both countries income must be adjusted ?

      Moving warships, subs into a neutral convoy zone constitutes an act of war?

      An act of war by Japan against any neutral (except Mongolia) results in a state of war with all allies while an ANZAC/UK attack on Japan maintains US neutrality. Should the US violate neutrality what is the Commonwealth status ?

      US neutrality ends after J3. This means the US can attack on US3 ?

      A 2/2/4/8 unit may be good alternative with the 8 pricetag being the premium for mobility. When paired w/armor or fighters the attack value could be upped to 3.

      Your new tac bombers could obsolete destroyers, as they would be strictly better than destroyers–if it weren’t for the destroyers’ sub detection and convoy disruption abilities.

      Thats one of the many reasons to never deadzone persia, but instead hold it.  You get a free AA gun and 6 UK units down there, no reason to waste them.

      No, this is not an error.  The units are placed behind the casualty strip because defending subs that are chosen as casualties will return fire.  You will notice that the last thing that happens in step 2 is that these casualties are removed.

      That line was the source of my confusion.  So subs chosen as casualties return fire; other unit casualties are removed prior to this.

      I haven’t played the new 42 either but agree with the last post. Something I’ll add is that the British ships in z2 are not safe unless Russia takes out Norway.

      Edit:  Just thought of something - the German Med fleet is affected by the transport casualty rule pretty badly too, so who knows!

      I wonder if Egypt is still a mandatory G1 attack since Germany can take out the British boats in the North Atlantic. If Germany attacks Egypt, then the UK can send a fighter and bomber to sink the med ships and land them both on Trans-Jordan. And for Germany to have a successful attack on Egypt, they need to commit planes. The bomber is in z2, the Ukraine fighter may be dead, I’d like a plane to make sure I win in the z15 naval battle, and should probably attack the cruiser. Maybe the med ships should go west and attack the cruiser supported by planes while taking Gibraltar.

      All air units must have a place to land.  You don’t have to move the AC if none of the ftrs survive but assuming all ftrs survive, each ftr must have a place to land.

      Per page 26 of AA50 rulebook under Air units:

      In order to demonstrate that an air unit MAY have a safe landing zone, you may assume that all of your attacking rolls will
      be hits, and all defending rolls will be misses. You cannot, however, use a planned retreat of any carrier to demonstrate a
      possible safe landing zone for any fighter.

      I have multiple copies of the game so I feel that Larry Harris/AH/WotC/MB made money off me.  As for AA50 being out of print, I’ll say it again, search your small local hobby store.  There’s one store in HI that still has AAE, AAP, AAR, and the last time I checked AA50 in stock.  This guy has a small store filled with all kinds of board games.  If you put in the effort, you will find it.

      As for my self, I still have my 2nd copy of AA50 in it’s original box.  Had the hardest time convincing my wife why I needed 3 copies.

      Heck I still remember one of my friends getting AA Classic map hand drawn with the initial setup on regular size paper (in color) and having it laminated so that we could discuss strategy and use it for PBEM.

      We’ve come a long way but still as the game gets more complex the longer it takes to setup and play.

      Although I have only played a few games of AA50 a few things seem clear regardless of the scenario:

      1. Chinamen vaporize faster than the humans In War of the Worlds…for a 1940 population of 455mil you have a better chance of finding a brontosaurus on the map by turn 3, possibly by turn 2 with the 41 scenario. Perhaps the spawn policy should be changed…maybe 1 for every 2 terr rounded up.

      2. He/she who controls the Gaza strip rules the world…the strip between Egypt and India plays a major role in deciding the game. If this is in allied hands the russians can usually hold the Caucases… if not their position is tenuous. conversely,

      3. Germans cannot live on a diet of sauerbraten alone… a little linguini and sushi help the digestion (of Russia) If the russian player is good I think it is difficult to do it with Germany alone. Just as russia need to hold out until the allies arrive Germany only needs to hold the front with/without  Italy’s help until you can get double/triple penetration on cau/rus with Japan.  Italy can either support france freeing the huns for eastward movement or shuttle thru Istanbul  Btw, I think closed Dardanelles is for pussies.

      4. NOs…I don’t know. The axis NOs are more easily obtained but I certainly like the extra 5 I get in russia for no foreigners as it lets me squeeze an armor in here and there.

      5. Pocket change…whenever I have a few extra scheckles I find myself buying subs particularly in a no tech game.  Its like a boxer with a good jab. keeps the Japs out of the Americans face, also good for the Med.

      6. Advantage who…are the axis really favored???  I am currently plaing a gencom rules game where axis recieved a bid. Maybe this is to offset the allied VC
      advantage with an 8 turn / 6 hour limit  an no NOs    I’d like to know peoples thoughts on who is favored and why
