I’ve been working on this project for about a year. Here is a preview of my take on the G40 map!
Some things to look for:
Pro-Axis and Pro-Allies neutrals have regular textures with no diagonal hash-marks.
Mountain terrain graphics have been added on every continent, from the Andes to the Caucasus and much more.
Many coastlines have been enhanced with greater detail.
The ocean is a custom element. It’s now a subtle gradient with minimized sea zone numbers.
Adjusted almost every sea zone border to optimize space in critical zones.
Enlarged Australia, Western United States, Morocco, Italy, Bessarabia, Malaya, Borneo, and sea zone 110.
Shrank Spain and Saudi Arabia.
These are just for starters. There are too many small tweaks to list. If you’re very familiar with details of the original map, I think you’ll enjoy discovering all of the small changes, so please see for yourself!
That is so helpful! Thank you for the analysis!
It’s too bad Avalon Hill didn’t print the new Anniversary Edition in the same colors as Europe '40 Second Edition. I really like the lighter shade of those Italian pieces because they’re easier to distinguish from Soviet red-brown.
I noticed that Infantry seem to be always be a shade off from equipment pieces. They usually run darker. Especially true of my ANZAC and Italian sculpts.
Do the new Italian pieces match the color used in Europe 1940 2nd Edition? Or are they in the darker shade used in 1st Ed?
Thanks.
Partisan Attacks
(Occurs immediately after the Convoy Disruption step)
A territory would be subject to having its income disrupted by a Partisan Attack unless it is occupied by at least 1 friendly land unit with a combat value.
Your original territories and original friendly neutral territories that you control are never subject to Partisan Attacks.
Roll one die for each affected territory.
Any rolls of “4” or higher are ignored.
The results of these rolls that are “3” or less is the damage suffered by Partisan Attacks.
No territory can lose more IPCs than its own IPC value.
The total of these results is subtracted from your income for the turn.
The purpose of this rule is to incentivize players to leave at least 1 occupying army unit in territories they conquer by adding a little risk to leaving those empty.
I think it would add an interesting logistical element and a cost of “occupation”, especially for Axis powers.
Areas of the game map most affected:
Strategic implications:
I’ll post a photo tonight after I get home. The paint looks good, just easily chips off (down to the plastic) when scratched. I’m perplexed because my original test pieces (OOB Ju-88 and HBG Panzer IV) came out impervious to scratching.
I’m in need of advice from anyone who has experience painting Axis & Allies sculpts.
I’ve started the long project of painting my armies and the main trouble that I’m having is getting the paint to stick, especially to infantry.
I’ll give you an overview of my project…
I’m using Tamiya model sprays, so I won’t be creating any additional details.
My sculpts are a combination of OOB ('40, '42) and HBG.
My goals are:
1. Use colors that are less game-y looking and more muted without compromising visibility.
2. Broaden the sculpt options per nation (i.e. using 2e Anzac sculpts like Warspite and Beaufort in UK tan)
3. Eliminate the difference in shade between OOB and HBG.
4. Sculpted details ‘pop’ more when painted.
I have a process which produced some highly successful test pieces. However, I have since been unable to duplicate their quality and I cannot figure out why.
The process:
1. Soak pieces with warm water and Dawn soap to remove mold release agents.
2. Rinse and dry.
3. Paint with a spray primer at room temp.
A. I’ve tried multiple primers (Krylon Fusion satin white, Citadel, Tamiya primer)
4. Let dry at least 24 hours.
5. Paint with light coats of Tamiya model sprays (room temp)
6. Let dry at least 24 hours.
7. Coat with Testors spray lacquer (semi gloss, @ room temp)
8. Let dry at least 24 hours.
I made perfect test pieces that whose colors were solid and perfectly scratch-proof.
So I went and bought the rest of the sprays that I wanted which were not cheap, and have since been unable to duplicate that quality. Infantry pieces seem to be especially ‘flaky’.
Have I missed something?
Is a soak in soapy water not enough, do I need to scrub each piece?
I’m afraid to paint en masse without 100% confidence that the paint won’t just scratch off after.
If anyone can advise me on my process/equipment, I would be very grateful! Thanks.
Many, many hours were spent creating the graphics for these custom card decks. These are meticulously detailed, professionally printed and cut, and designed to match the aesthetic of AA40.

Any way to make that work or would it just get steamrolled by Japan in most cases?

Putting the finishing touches on these new National Objective cards.
They are 2.5 x 3.5" (poker size), to be printed at 600 DPI.

I’m going for a clean-looking design. I wanted the historical photos to be very prominent, in order to add some interesting visual flair to the game.

Thanks, everyone, for the positive feedback!!!
Sure! Here is a link to the full .jpg file. Let me know if you see anything else that needs to be fixed.

Thank you very much, YG! Another thing I forgot to mention is that I “finished” New Zealand by hand. The original map has it cropped. Because the dimensions are different, I was able to expand the southern hemisphere a bit.
Ambilzi, Intrepid, Young Grasshopper made the original map file.
I resized it and cleaned it up a lot. Here is a low-resolution preview:

Too many fixes to list.
Thanks for the advice! I will try a different primer.
Yes, I washed them with warm soapy water. Is it necessary to scrub your pieces with a brush while doing so? Because I did not. Just soaked them and washed them off.
I was trying to use Citadel Paints spray primer. The primer does not adhere, it scratches off easily.
I am having trouble priming the polyethylene material that 1914’s pieces are made from. Has anybody tackled this issue?
