In a lot of ways this map is superior to A&A 1914. Especially the colors. The red for the Ottomans is so much better then the turquoise. I also like how Bulgaria is controlled by Germany over the Ottomans. More territories to maneuver in too. How large will the map be? Is there some connection with this game and Pegasus Hobbies? Are they making the the pieces? I do like how Larry’s map feels more global though. A few suggestions I would have for the map is maybe consider creating a new image for the forts. I had to really zoom in just to tell what it was. Maybe get rid of one of the US convoys and make it Canadian also. Shouldn’t the Russian capitol be in Petrograd? Spaces like Gallipoli seem way too small. Over all though I really dig it.

RE: 1914 Sculpts list by type…from larry
That’s unfortunate there are few sculpts. I was hoping there was 22.(Unique sculpts for Allies and CP) I guess we’ll have to wait for future editions or games if there are any to get more sculpts. Either that or HBG or FMG needs to get make more sculpts.

RE: Test Play Setup
Haha! Very cool. The western front does look screwed. There is no way you can fit chipped British, Germany, and French units in those spaces. They look too small and your map was even a little bigger! As I’ve stated on other boards there needed to be a blow up box for the WF. Something like this from Triple A’s The Great War. Without it it’s just a jumbled mess of troops you can’t maneuver or even put into the same space together. I defiantly plan on making one for a A&A 1914 variant.

RE: Preview 1: Setup & The Political Situation
Hmmm…I don’t know how to feel about the U.S. rules. I thought the U.S. would basically not move, build, or play till the 4th turn. Isn’t her income low too? I guess she doesn’t have to spend any IPC on ground units to defend, but if Germany is doing well at sea a loss of transports or capitol ships will take awhile to replenish. France lower income then Austria-Hungary? Must be for balance. The control markers are excellent. Well done with that. I also don’t get why it doesn’t activate a minor power if you enter a non capital territory? You would think if you started taking over people’s colonies or what not it would lead to war. I really like how they gave Canada a lot of units(6inf, 2Art) to kinda represent all the troops they would bring to the war over the years since you can’t build there.

RE: Unit Sculpt Variety
The land game is going to be nothing more than
an attritional dice roll fest so I don’t see any exciting mechanics there. If the game would have used the “Great War” blow up box idea for the Western Front the A&A 1914 would have room for maneuver and strategy instead of the boring Western Front we are getting in the game.

RE: Unit Sculpt Variety
Yeah, everyone always wants more sculpts and it’s a little disappointing, but I think what we get is cool. Someone will make some new sculpts you can buy on side I’m sure.

RE: Preview 0: Release Date March 19
Very cool! I see that Bulgaria is definitely controlled by Turkey. Kinda wish it was by Germany, but no big deal. Interesting that the Adriatic is not it’s own sea zone. How is the mine rule working with the Italian fleet in the same zone as the Austrians? Do they have to fight since they are in the same zone or does the port rule protect them? Is the board cut off? Looks like Madagascar is. A few colors I would change, but overall it’s nice.

RE: Burbank/Los Angeles players
Hi! Good to hear from someone. :) I was going to go to that con, but my Dad will be visiting from out of state that weekend and gaming isn’t his thing so I’ll have to miss this one. There are 3 a year right? Definitely going to the next one so hopefully see you then. If you wanted to get together some other time let me know and maybe we can figure out a time.

RE: Ottoman Empire
Well, hopefully UK can build in India to represent Indian and Anzac troops. They’ll put pressure on the Turks. Can’t wait for that! Love the UK in A&A.

RE: Is Germany screwed?
If Germany has a transport or two in the Baltic you can transport 2-4 units from Poland, PetroGrad, Prussia right to Keil and to the western front quicker. That’s at least a partial solution to getting your Eastern troops back to the West with more speed.

RE: How much would you pay for a painted copy of 1914?
If I wanted painted infantry pieces I’d probably buy HaT figures and get the exact poses I want.
http://www.hat.com/currentW.html
By paining the bases in player colours you can still retain the colour coding.
But I’d need that bigger board; someone could make a killing from producing them.
Just a quick ask on what folks would want -
An exact copy of the official board at double size?
A copy with anomalies such as East Prussia fixed?
A copy with a global dimension; i.e. Indian Ocean and Pacific included, possibly as an optional extension?
At some point when I have some time and money I want to pimp my game with those HAT units. I love the idea of doing that, but at the same time I’m hesitant because at the moment I have no one to game with and who spends money on cazy pimped out games without players? LOL
All of the above. Yes the Pacific wasn’t vital in the war, but for WWI buffs it would be fun to have it included. The African fronts weren’t that important either and they are in this game. I think it would be fun to have an optional extension. The fighting would or should last a round or 2 at the most, yet it just adds flavor. Plus then you can actually ship troops from Australia and New Zealand and fight the Germans in the Pacific and China for a turn. As the Germans with your few Cruisers you can decide to fight or run away to fight the allies another day. Maybe have more areas over there that the Germans can do shipping damage like the Atlantic. I’m really hoping for a deluxe edition with the Pacific included and a few more unit choices like bombers and advanced rules like poison gas, Rail movement, ect.

RE: Opening the door for more World War One based games? Your opinion
I am hoping too for more WWI games! Battle games like A&A: D-Day, BOTB, etc., and hopefully a cooler and more advanced game about the Great War that we are getting now. I think a theater game of just the Western Front would be super cool. Triple A’s “Great War” had a lot of things right. Not everything, but definitely there are some things in that game that are superior to this one. I think the battle mechanics for Larry’s WWI game are better, but the map(including the blowup box for the Western Front) and some of the other colors for the nations are superior. Red for the Ottomans is so much better then Turquoise for example. I don’t know what they were thinking with that?

RE: Is Germany screwed?
I agree with you Flashman. Simple and effective non combat Rail movement rules could of been made for this game. It could still work out well. We’ll have to see when we get the game.

RE: Images of the Map?
Has it been said how Bulgaria will be handled as one of the Central Powers? Will it be controlled by the Ottomans like Serbia for the Russians? If it was up to me I think it would be cooler if was controlled by the German player. Give a more of a feeling of a separate player since it isn’t controlled by the other 2 powers involved in the Balkan Wars. It will give another theater for the German player to play in and maybe build in? I think limited builds in Bulgaria would be cool.

RE: The British Empire
I like playing the UK and to me it’s much cooler and historical if you have build troops all over the Empire. I’ve always been a fan of separate builds in India/ANZAC/Canada. If it was up to me they would all have a separate incomes that had to be built there. Fortunately as A&A has evolved Larry has moved toward this idea except for Canada. Larry almost takes us there with separate roundels and it’s own factories, but leaves it short with no separate income so in the end it’s not usually worth it to build there. Maybe one day…haha

RE: Germany!
I’ve no objection to Germany invading Holland, though I don’t think the Allies should be allowed to invade neutrals.
I’ve suggested that Germany is allowed to collect trade income from Holland and other bordering neutrals; if they invade they still get this cash but add 4 units to opposing armies.
It wasn’t so much the forts; they knew that the entire French strategy was a drive through Alsace-Lorraine. So, in order to wrong-foot France, allow them to move east, and then swing round behind them to cut them off from supplies and reinforcements before crushing them.
I like that idea for Holland Flashman. At least it’s something to deal with that aspect of history. Germany never needed to invade Holland. What would be the point? A costly sideshow battle with nothing to gain. It needed to move quickly and defeat France. If France was defeated it could take Holland anytime it wanted to later anyway. I guess it’s the basic game mechanic of take territories and gain money that is at fault here.
I still say the forts had a important role in why Germany went through Belgium. You are correct in everything you are saying about the flanking maneuver, but the Germans feared the forts on the French border.

RE: The British Empire
Canada, India, ANZAC, and the rest of the empire was very important to the UK war effort. The UK’s empire is what really made it a World War with men coming from all corners of the globe to fight. Hopefully Larry has simple, but effective rules that demonstrate this reality. At the very least I hope the UK can do limited building in India.

RE: Germany!
Belgium’s frontier was more heavily fortified than that of France. It was more to do with outflanking the French army and sweeping round to attack it from the west.
But didn’t they want to outflank them because attacking the French head on through their forts would of been two slow and costly and they needed to defeat the French quickly? I could be wrong of course, but just watched a documentary on WWI yesterday that indicated that Schlieffen’s solution to France’s fortifications was to go around them.
Also Larry comments on invading Holland in the game. I’m all for having the option to invade Holland, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, ect. when Germany didn’t in the war, but shouldn’t there be some reasons not too? I mean why not invade Holland? It feels just like a quick cash grab for the German’s every game.

RE: Germany!
Love the mine rules and the unrestricted submarine warfare. Great new stuff Larry! Overall seems cool. One thing I wish would have been represented in the game is why the Germans attacked through Belgium in the first place! The French had a very well fortified frontier with Germany. It would of been great to introduce forts in this game either on the map or as a piece. Probably something ripe for house rules. Also has anyone felt surprised that the attacking infantry/artillery have a higher attack value then their A&A WWII counterparts? Is that to help make up for them only being able to attack one round?

RE: Images of the Map?
If this is how Russia is divided I’m a little disapointed. Why can’t they divide the territories so they all equal about the same amount of distance? It’s so weird where one space represents a few hundred miles and another a thousand or more. One of Russia’s biggest advantages is it’s size and how far you have to travel across it to get anywhere. So few spaces negates that and could easily be represented and more historical with a few more territories. I don’t want a map with a million spaces that takes just as many years to play, but more then this for Russia. I do like that there are conditions for Russia’s revolution and it doesn’t just automatically happen like some thought maybe it would for simplicity. I also find it interesting that it is an optional rule. Do you think people will want to use it most of the time or not?
