    • Convoys and Allied Air Cover

      This map from the pc game Silent Hunter 3 perfectly illustrates what I’m hoping for in the Europe 1940 map: safe gap for U-boats and wide Atlantic. The Europe land mass obviously will be enlarged for game purposes.

      Interesting to note that if the Azores was a territory in the game it shouldn’t have completely closed the gap even up to 1943. Below that, I never realized there was such a large gap directly west of Africa; but even more frightening was the Allied 1941 air coverage… 😮

      @The:

      @Brain:

      I still want blockhouses.

      Those might be nice. But i would rather it be like airbases and naval bases where you pay like 15-20 ipcs and then put like a “fortification token” on a territory that ups all infantry defense by like one. It would be great to have in like France and England and such. But expensive enough so that it is an investment. And it also is different enough from infantry to make sense to use (instead of buying lots of blockhouse pieces).

      Brain Damaged & Fire Knight, I agree; I’ve posted what I’ve found to be good fix for a blockhouse piece in the house rules section…now to work out the rule details… 😐

    • Blockhouse units for all A&A games

      I’ve finally found the perfect blockhouse piece. These were discovered by accident while browsing through a dollar store, of all places. It’s those slide puzzle things we likely all played with as kids. So for $1 you get 32 plastic units; great deal. The best part is all you have to do is paint them; I found Humbrol #127 Satin US Ghost Grey the best match.

      So far I like the idea someone shared of being 15 IPC each, one per territory, and allows any artillery there to fire first during amphibious assaults. Of course, if anyone comes up with the IDEAL rules for how these can be used, please share…

      (sorry if this is the wrong place to post this)

      Exactly; meaning they will be making the toughest decisions throughout the entire game. Every UK IPC will have to be carefully considered… 😉

      @Enigmatic_Decay:

      My friend and I are veteran players (15 years) of a few different A&A games. We both live in the Mississauga area and are both well over the age of majority which helps as we indulge in a few cold ones and a whiskey or two or ten while playing.  Looking to get a game going sometime in the future with anyone who is interested!

      Cool; little bit of a drive for me but hell, the nice weather is coming…keep in touch…

      @SilverAngelSurfer:

      All UK territories on the Pacific half of the map will be spent at the India IC.  All UK territories on the Europe half of the map will be able to be spent at any of UK’s 3 ICs there: England, South Africa, and Quebec.

      My concern is the production chart for Global: isn’t this going to be very annoying to count/track/split each time UK collects?  :? Wait, maybe the UK will have two charts of their own… :roll:

      @SilverAngelSurfer:

      And apparently the A&A world doesn’t revolve around Canada either, nothing more for it than “recognition”.  Oh well.  I’m sure this way is probably better.

      Little disappointing but hey, we can use the lime green UK pieces for Canadian units…and that’s good enough “recognition” for me.  😄

      As we all know, finding players is like finding a needle in a haystack…simply looking for anyone up for a game here and there for any version of the game. I own them all, so the choice is yours. Let me know; thanks!  8-)

      Does anyone have or know a link where I can get a good digital map of AA50, AA42 and AAP40?  🙂

      @mike55:

      5. An initiative roll when one side in a battle are submarines only, so that subs can submerge or even move one zone to avoid a battle if they win initiative. This would force the anti-submarine (ASW) forces to spread out and cover more sea zones and not concentrate on one spot.  Knowing exactly where the sub is sets up quick kills and a short sub campaign, which is extremely unrealistic.  (I do like the new convoy rules of AAP40, but we need convoys in mid-ocean for the Atlantic.)

      I like it; although the sub rules have confused many novices/newcomers with its special abilities over the years, I still welcome a rule similar to this.

      Why?

      I checked the other day and forgot that the original Europe gave Germany a whopping 10 U-boats to begin with but they all ended up at the bottom of the Atlantic in about 2 rounds…sigh  :roll:

    • RE: Europe Map Projection Redux

      Ok, no Azores but hope you and I “assume” correctly about the Atlantic.  😉

      I’d rather see a squashed and inaccurate North/South America as a trade off for a wider Atlantic…nothing besides unit placement/mobilization really happens there anyhow in our games…

    • RE: Europe Map Projection Redux

      Can anyone deny or confirm the following concerning the Europe 1940 map:

      1. Will have a fairly accurate, widened Atlantic?
      2. only WITH the above, Azores included? (considering how much smaller Malta is…)

      Am I alone in wanting either of these?  😐

    • RE: Replacements for cardboard counters in the 1940's series

      Air and Naval bases should be fairly flat for the purpose of repairs and landing. Keep them smallish as to not get in the way of crowded units, particularly on islands. Airbase could be a silhouette of the tarmac (A&A: Guadalcanal) and Naval base could be a simplified, birds eye view of the linked docks, breakwater, etc…not sure, that’s a tough one… 😐

      @Gargantua:

      Wow those look nice.

      Especially the ones with red.

      I can’t wait to use the 0 marker.  I seem to need that one all the time!

      Thanks  🙂 Yes, the 0 “fuel” marker comes in handy the odd time and makes for a good reminder to move the carrier into that zone. Larry Harris said he’s now using these in his current game  😄

      Oh, and thanks johnnymarr for providing the answers…

    • RE: Why are there Canadian roundels? A new rule perhaps?

      @SilverAngelSurfer:

      I don’t think Larry is ready to go to the level of complexity necessary to account for transportation of income across oceans, I think he’s leaving it the same it has always been except for adding convoys, and this explanation accounts for Canada being the other “semi-major” power of the UK commonwealth along with ANZAC, the Canadian roundels, and the split income hint: everything!  :mrgreen:

      Your lengthy but well written post is the best I’ve read so far about all this Canada as a power business…though, just for fun, I will likely use those mint green units for Canada  😄

      @allboxcars:

      In terms of contributions to the Allied effort, Canada far outstrips France and in terms of game play, well if Paris Ontario falls before Paris France then there’s a serious problem.

    • Aircraft Range Markers - for all games

      Here’s something I’ve posted over on the Larry Harris site; not sure where else to post but it relates to almost all A&A games:  😉

      Movement for ground and sea units is easy to keep track of but when there’s an enormous amount of air units at play, it’s often difficult to remember which moved, landed, ran out of fuel, etc.

      These Aircraft Range Markers may help some people out on such an occasion; very simple pdf to print on thick cardstock, cut out and use.

    • RE: Do you want canada as a power

      @The:

      Not as a separate power, but almost definitely a division within the U.K. My bet is that it at least has equal status in the global game to ANZAC. And also, if Canada has it’s own markers, you can bet that it will have its own pieces as well. You can’t have one w/o the other. Any ideas on what color they might be?

      I see where you’re coming from but there’s no need for unique molds because Canada would be using the same equipment as the UK, as far as I know. If they’re a colour, I’d like to see a slightly darker tan/khaki keeping the UK power cohesive, looks-wise.

      I do see and like the idea of a divisional UK income; that does make sense. I’m just happy Canada will be represented/involved in the game in some meaningful way.

      @Bluecoat1861:

      Going with the Monoply Idea, the pieces in Monoply City are great - - - you can use the 2 Indstrial unit peice is a great stand in.

      Just checked these out on boardgamegeek; wow, they seem pretty good but are they smaller (to use as minor IC) or the same as the A&A ones?

    • RE: Replacements for cardboard counters in the 1940's series

      Good idea regarding monopoly houses; just paint them the same grey as the classic complexes, which I’d rather see in the new games. What’s wrong with the new design? A quick strategic glance at a crowded board and I can’t see them.

      As for the current flat naval and air bases, I actually like the idea of physically placing/parking the units on them; though, I do find them a tad too small. I’d be interested in what you come up with…

    • RE: Locations of Air and Naval Bases

      @Richter:

      I would put a naval into “western” France - Germany used this as a staging point for subs end based some cruisers (includung the Scharnhorst/Gneisenau) for some time there.

      I think it should be a built, optional base (illustrating the upgraded concrete pens) not a pre-built. If not, Germany will have no chance for long-term harassment with their uboats. Unfortunately, and fortunately if you’re the allies, this will likely become the number one naval base bombed throughout the game…

      On that note though, I actually liked the subtle “watermarked” convoy and kamakazi zones.

      Same here 😉 just when the allies get too cocky you remind them of a kamakazi strike. “Oh, did’nt QUITE see that coming…”
