I’m loving this two part interview. It goes deep into the philosophy behind the design of the game. Thank you for sharing!

RE: Card Deck Question: Escalation versus Z Rise
Good question. The Z Rise card is identical in function to the Escalation cards. I don’t know the answer but my guess is someone was careless in the card design department.

RE: I bought a second AAZ set
Looks like Amazon just raised the price up to $30 for a new AAZ set. But if anyone wants a set (or a second set) there is another one listed with a damaged box for just $23. It’s described as minimal damage. If anything it’s a good chance to get extra pieces. I do believe the AAZ pieces are the same size as the AA Anniversary pieces so you could use them for another set too.

RE: Can Germany have more than 2 aircraft carriers in play
Yes you can do it. In situations like this I use a little piece of paper or a lego piece as a stand in.

RE: I bought a second AAZ set
Surprisingly even. 3 times allies won, 2 times axis won, 1 time zombies won. I’m not an expert player though.
Zombies can create situations where you are invading neutrals or sending units to weird places like Brazil. And sometimes zombies get lucky dice rolls and ending up taking over territories. I even had zombies capture Moscow a couple times.
I like the wildcard factor of the zombies. Sometimes you can even send zombies to attack your enemy. For example I had Japan send half a stack of zombies to India and weaken the Brits, making it easier to invade the next turn.

I bought a second AAZ set
I’ve played about 6 AAZ game sessions now. I love the affordability/simplicity aspect of the game for many reasons, but as a consequence it doesn’t ship with a large surplus of units or chips. You do have enough pieces to play a quick aggressive game, but if you want to stack up a lot of units you can find yourself short of pieces. Particularly I found myself frequently short of UK and US land units and transports, and short of round chips. I never ran short of money or air units.
After looking at HBG I decided it might be more economical to buy an additional complete game set, especially considering that the complete set is so affordable anyway. Low and behold I found a damaged set on Amazon, it was at a discount and claimed to be an intact set with a damaged outer box.
I received it today and it has nothing more than one finger sized hole punched into the center of the back side of the box. The plastic tray and all of the components inside were undamaged and intact. So I now have plenty of units and chips to play AAZ big unit stacker style, and even have an extra map, battle board, etc if I spill too much beer on the original ones.
TL;DR: If you want more AAZ units/pieces, look around the intertubes for used or damaged sets, and you might get a good deal on a second set of components.

RE: AAZ Rule Question: getting the 1 infantry bonus
I’ve found that if I take a territory and end combat while leaving a couple zombies in it, then the zombies tend to whittle down the remaining forces in subsequent turns during the zombie attack phase. So I usually go for the complete zombie wipe-out when I’m doing combat.

RE: What's the best material to use when printing a custom map?
From what I’ve been reading online, lots of people are having good luck with printing onto vinyl. It can be rolled up for easy storage, and unrolled on your playing surface when it’s time to start a war.

RE: Pieces
If you want extra pieces but don’t want to buy an extra copy of the game, I find that HBG and Ebay are the best sources for extra pieces. Ebay sellers often part out game sets just like HBG does. Just look around for the best price.

RE: AAZ Rule Question: getting the 1 infantry bonus
Page 4 of the AAZ rulebook says that you only need to survive one round of zombie combat to recapture a zombie-controlled territory, and that upon recapture of the territory you receive one infantry. So yes it really is the case than you can liberate/conquer the territory and gain that additional free infantry while there are still Zs present in this very area.

RE: A question on battleship etiquette when assigning damage
That’s good to know, thank you! I don’t want to appear to be playing dirty. :innocent:

A question on battleship etiquette when assigning damage
Scenario: Germany sends 1 battleship and 1 destroyer to attack a UK fleet of 2 destroyers.
Round 1: Germany rolls two hits. UK rolls one hit.
Question: Is it considered bad form for the German player to assign the single hit to his battleship and save his destroyer from sinking? In other words, is it generally permissible for battleships to be used as hit sinks to spare smaller units from destruction? Do house rules ever prevent or discourage this damage assignment strategy?

RE: Top Three Expansions to Play With
Global War recently released Zombie and Atlantis expansions, has anyone tried either of those? They look like they would be lots of fun and a good way to spice up an otherwise traditional wargame scenario.

RE: AAZ - Review and Thoughts (Work In Progress) [House Rules]
I’ve been looking around, and most game review sites are giving favorable reviews to AAZ. And zombies are hot right now in popular culture, so I bet it will be a relatively good seller and will be considered a win in the eyes of Avalon Hill, despite the pooh-poohs it’s getting from the diehard wargame crowd.
And it’s also very affordable, especially on Amazon and Ebay. I wouldn’t be surprised if AAZ eclipses the other AA games’ total sets sold counts in due time.

RE: China
@Hopper1999 said in China:
this game is played china is just steam rolled and I was just wondering is their any way around this, like seems like the same problem that global40 had with c
Historically speaking, China’s military ability was pretty weaksauce in the 30s-40s. So I’d say this is historical accuracy.

RE: Somebody please make a "MOD" of AAZ for Axis and allies 1940 global
@Maxiheimer That’s cool, did you use the AAZ zombies or zombies from another source?
What would really be the coup de grace on an AAG1940 adaptation I think would be a card deck that adds the AAZ style Zombie events “desperate times/desperate measures” to the whole AAG map.
And if so many other Global War expansions are compatible with AAG1940, theoretically the Global War Zombie expansion could be made compatible with AAG1940 if someone were to try, right? The GW Zombie rulebook treats the zombie outbreak much differently than AAZ does in terms of the mechanics of the zombie units and how the infection spreads, but I don’t see why either couldn’t be made to work with GW1940.

RE: Somebody please make a "MOD" of AAZ for Axis and allies 1940 global
I just played my first game of AAZ yesterday, and I haven’t played AAG1940 yet, but I’ve got it coming soon. Based on my experience with AAZ so far I’m thinking an adaptation could be done. Hopefully one of the more experienced members of the AA community will take a swing at making “AAGZ” soon.
Avalon Hill included rules and a card deck in AAZ to adapt it to 1942. It would be awesome if they released a rule book and even a card deck for AAG1940.

RE: Somebody please make a "MOD" of AAZ for Axis and allies 1940 global
@taamvan Whoops, you’re right. The funny thing is that many of the Global War expansions from HBG are compatible with AAG1940, and I just thought the new Zombie expansion was as well. But now that I’ve gone through the rules I don’t see anything about compatibility with AAG1940. Oh well.

RE: Somebody please make a "MOD" of AAZ for Axis and allies 1940 global
@Maxiheimer It looks like HBG just released a Zombie expansion pack that is AAG 1940 compatible. It looks fun.
