How to win as US

In the current situation (board is not here where I can see it) I think 2 Japanese fleets may be able to reach Hawaii.  My thinking is that they can’t afford to do this attack because they can’t afford the losses even if they did come out numerically ahead in IPCs.

After turn one Japan has to concentrate on consolidation and maybe picking off straggling Allies units. Japan can afford no signifigant losses of material.

Japan can have a decided advantage with an India Crush tactic.  However, there are very powerful “Anti-Crush” tactics that can be brought to bear against a J3 or J4 attack.Â

The anti-crush has to be flexible but these are some of the elements.

1.  Provided Japan hasn’t positioned itself for a powerful J3 attack, on Allies 1, India buys 9 Inf (or 5 Inf, 3 Rtl), Aus buys an AC and US buys 5 bombers).

2.  On UK1 NCM, if the sz54 trn has survived and sz47 has not been occupied by Japan, move the trn to sz47 and the sub to sz52.  This will prevent Japan from occupying sz52 and capturing the British convoy on J2 and will effectively delay a Japanese attack until J4.  If you can manage this, Japan’s chance of success drops to about 50% on the J4 attack.  The sz50 fighter flies to India or Burma.

3.  All Australia ground units must move to South Australia.  Two US fighters will land on the newly build UK carrier.  Blocking units must be placed in sz28 and sz15 and the bulk of the US fleet moved to sz14.

4.  If Japan, on J2, makes a strong move against India, on UK/US 2, the Australian ground units and a fighter or two plus the seven US bombers move to Western Australia.  This becomes either bait or reinforcements for India.  If Japan attacks WAus on J3, it has weakened any attack on J4.

5.  The sz50 BB moves to sz52 and the sz52 sub moves to sz53.  This effectively blocks any J3 attack against India from any units in sz47, where the Japanese must congregate for an all out assault on India.

6.  The new UK carrier moves to sz41 with it’s load of US fighters and the sz50 carrier moves to sz42 and lands two US fighters.  Either one of these units is a sitting duck for Japanese attack but the point is to present Japan with tough choices.  Every unit attacking in the south pacific on J3 will probably be unavailable for attack against India on J4.

7.  On J3, Japan moves into position for its attack.  If either of the UK carriers survive, the UK carriers move to sz49 and the US fighters fly off to India to meet the J4 attack.  The 7 US bombers from WAus also fly to Aus.  If there is any easy targets for the bombers to attack in conjunction with Chinese Infantry, they can do that instead but they should only attack units that can definitely participate in the J4 attack on India (preferably if they can kill a few fighters or bombers located in FIC, Burma or Shan State.

8.  In Asia, the movement of Allied troops will depend on the threat to Yunnan.  If after J1, Japan can wipe out your forces in Yunnan, you will have to retreat the Chinese and UK troops to Burma and the rest of your Chinese troops to Kwiechow.  If you can hold Yunnan then do it because you will be able to move more Chinese troops to Burma on US2 that will be able to reach India to defend the J4 attack.

The anti-crush works.  You just have to be a little flexible and a little lucky.  If you feel an India crush is coming on J1, then the ideal purchases on Allies 1 are those I set out above.  It gives you the best chance of defending a J4 attack.  If there is a strong J3 attack possible, then read those long threads I referred to above.  The J3 attack is harder to defend because India may have to purchase 2 subs on UK1 to prevent the J3 attack, thus weakening the J4 defence.

Wich means only those ICs that are on the planboard at the beginning of the match.

Any other ICs US forces might buy has limitated production rate.

Industrial Centers and Placing New Units

Only the US can buy industrial complexes. Does this mean that once a non-US industrial complex is destroyed, that country can’t build or buy any more and is pretty well out of the war?
Industrial complexes can’t be destroyed, only captured. As each country has an industrial complex in its capital, it can’t lose all its industrial complexes without losing its capital. When that happens, it is likely that that country has pretty well had it. It’s also likely that the game will end soon.

Where can Industrial Complexes be built?
Only the US can build ICs, and they can only be built in territories that are blue (US) or brown (Japanese) AND under US control.

Can you place naval units in Hawaii? Page 25 states “Naval units acquired during phase 1 are now placed in sea zones adjacent to your home territory.” Is Hawaii considered US home territory?
Yes, the US can build all types of units in Hawaii. “Home Territory” was a poor choice of words. They are subject to the usual restrictions; units can only be placed in territories (or sea zones adjacent to territories) that were owned since the start of the player turn.

So can the USA spend all 75 IPCs building units in Hawaii if it so chooses?
Yes.

Is there a limit to how many units can be placed at a particular industrial complex?
Sometimes. Any number of units per turn can be placed at an IC that the player owned at the start of the game. If the IC was captured or was built during the game, then the number of units placed there per turn can’t exceed the territory’s IPC value. If the IPC value is 0, then an IC can’t be built there. (A common house rule, brought over from the original Axis & Allies, is that ICs can be built in 0 IPC territories and one unit per turn can be placed there. This is not an official rule, but its use seems to be widespread. Assume this modified rule is not in effect unless all players agree to it beforehand.)

The rulebook states the US marines cost 4 IPCs, but the US reference card shows them costing 3 IPCs. Which is it?
Marines cost 4 IPCs, not 3. The book is right, the chart is wrong.

Can you build one naval piece in an enemy-controlled sea zone specifically to cause combat and prevent Shore Bombardment?
Yes. This may seem sneaky, but it’s legal. Sometimes, it’s an excellent tactic.

What is the significance of the Burma road?
China receives an additional infantry unit if the Burma road is open at the start of the Chinese turn.

If Chinese forces capture French Indochina or Siam, can the US build an industrial complex there?
No, not if all the land forces involved in the capture were Chinese. If a joint Chinese/US land force captures the territory, then it can go to either country. If it goes to the US, then an IC can be built there and on the following turn, US units can be placed there. There must be US land forces physically in the territory when it is captured for it to be controlled by the US (and the same thing applies to China). If the only US units involved were air units, or all US land units were killed in the battle, then the US can’t take possession. (The territory isn’t “captured” until all Japanese units are destroyed, so US units that die before the battle is won are not involved in the “capture.”)

What can the US build in Szechwan?
Nothing. The US/China player can build only Chinese infantry in Szechwan. If the Japanese capture Szechwan, however, they can place one unit there per turn, the same as at any captured industrial complex.

the move against both Hawaii and us fleet is a great move… unfortunately you can’t place your carriers in the Aleutian seazone, that would make your planes (in zone 5) make an illegal combat move.
You can’t use the carriers to make a move forward and then send of planes, the planes can only move four spaces.

When I try to make this move and I usually do this.
2 subs to z9
2 planes to z9
4 planes to z5

You will then typically have 2 fighters left from z5 and both fighters from z9
You will only loose 2 subs and 2 fighters total
(these are based out of statics’s of 1000 battles)
The US fleets will be destroyed with the exception of 1 sub left in z5 (if he doesn’t submerge this, he’s crazy)

I would recommend that you then take your carriers and move them to the northern US convoy in z6 and land your fighters here.
Now I know this means that theres a chance that you will loose the carriers and the fighters. US is able to respond to this on their first turn with 3 ftr 2 bmb and 1 sub. But with the convoy there and away from the remainders of the us fleet, its the best choice, if you are performing this move.
The outcome of this battle is very luck dependent, your fighters will have nowhere to land if you loose your carriers. so the sub has a lot to say in this battle.
if we look at the numbers again the us will only be able to clear this zone in about 20% of the time… which is pretty good odds for japan.
But still it would be foolish of the US not to try to make a move against the carriers, as the attacker they have the option of retreating, if it turns out to the dice are against them.

This is IMO a great advantage for japan, as the US will have to build their whole navy again from nothing. You take the convoy, its only 5 IPC but the US will not be able to take the convoy back until turn 2. Besides if they attack you get the chance to weaken their airforce as well.
Sure its a shame to loose the carriers this early in the game, this makes an Australian invasion very hard and you won’t have the power to do nothing else than delay the forthcomming US fleet, without the carriers.
It all depends on your playing style, but if you want to be aggressive, this is a great move. Especially if you go for an Indian invasion, as the US won’t be able to get there before its to late, if you go for this.

No. China is played like a completly different nation with the same turn as the US. Since the Chinese have no income there is nothing to take away.
