I’ve played several games of AAP and have read that 24-25 vp provides a balanced game. It seems Im a turn or two short in SBRing Japan into oblivion. The last two games I took a northern approach after retaking Midway to take Bonin islands so my bombers could have escort that was not carrier based. This seemed to be the shortest approach, however I could not secure until turn 6  so Japan had 3,4,4,4,4,3,3 points and moved his air units from asia and a portion of his fleet to defend against SBR  so I could only muster 1 or 0 vp a turn.

    Any suggestions?

  • Four 4 VP rounds for Japan is usually death for the Allies in either a 24 or 25 VP game.  If you allow Japan to get 4-4’s, Allies will usually lose.

The idea of securing Bonin islands is a good plan but you should also consider taking Marianas so that you can SBR 1 turn early.  However, Allies cannot neglect sending some forces to try to get Japan below the 4 VPs by J5.  This may take the form of subs to take away convoy routes, sufficient units to pry Japan out of Siam or FIC or some ground units to take Sumatra while blocking a Japanese counterattack.

I’ve tried the marianas but then I lose fighter escort as most of my fleet gets wasted in the naval battle prior to the amphib assault. Between the aa and escort I cant make a big dent on the IPC front. I will try to make my asia push earlier.

Thanks for the input SS ;I think AAP is a great game. I will try a few solitaire runs to see how this plays out. Perhaps, when I get my nerve up we can give it a go and I can watch the master at work.
