I was putzing around with Guadacanal last night trying to get a taste for the flavor of the game when I realized that despite all the rule changes/ additions that have occured since AAclassic the aircraft lineup has remained the same. In a pacific theatre game the addition of torpedo/dive bombers might be something to think about.

In Guadalcanal these units could be cheaper than fighters with no sea or air attack (1 for land attack) and be used in a similar fasion to subs eg. at the end of the air attack phase any survivng  units could choose their targets with hits on 1  or 2 to soften up the fleet before the naval phase commences. For land  or airfield attacks standard rules would apply.

In AAP play would follow along SBR lines…dive/torpedo bombers enter a hostile zone alone or with other units. Fighters on CAP could intercept say with hits on 3 or less. If there is fighter escort hits would be at 2  or less and losses can be taken from fighters. Surviving fighters would need a 2 or less to hit. Defender choses casualties. (they get to return fire)
Cost for these units could be 8 IPC.

I’d be surprised if I was the first one to think of this but I havent seen anything in the threads that I’ve read. Curious to know peoples thoughts.

  • I could see them maybe more in GC than pacific, with all the cap rules and things, I think it might overcomplicate, but in GC, could be a whole different story.
then you may want fighters to be able to protect these bombers the more actual bombers, while fighters wouldn’t actually attack ships, only other aircraft.  After air combat, surviving torpedo/dive bombers could attack…

It dosen’t seem like there is much enthusiam for this option. As for fighter escort protection it depends on ones preference for choice pickings or massed rolls. In pacific the choice is between rolls of 2 or  less vs  4 or less.
