Bombers can't participate in naval battles.

  • What the title says.  Bombers should not be able to participate in naval battles.  This is good for 3 reasons:
    1. It is realistic.  Bombers are clearly of the large, strategic variety, and thus being able to attack ships at sea is not within their domain.  Anti-Ship aircraft are clearly the domain of the Fighter piece, rather than having them be eclipsed by Bombers.
    2. It is balancing.  Bombers are excessively strong currently, due to their ability to sink enemy fleets, at long range, without having a fleet oneself.  Their lowered cost makes their ground attack and SBR abilities quite solid, meaning that they no longer need anti-sea abilities, which are now overpowered.
    3. Lastly, it weakens the effectiveness of what are arguably the 3 most powerful techs in the game, Long Range Aircraft, Heavy Bombers, and Paratroopers.  Bombers can’t abuse the first against Sea units, and their limited capabilities means that Paratroopers no longer makes them an omnipurpose unit (Anti-Land, Anti-Sea, SBR, and Transportation).

  • This change does make the game better, IMO.

  • Sure, but is it historical correct ?

KM Tirpitz was sunk by Lancaster bombers.

Coastal Command used long range bombers to sink german subs.

Germany used long ranged Condor bombers to sink UK ships. 50 % of the UK convoys was sunk by bombers, and the other half by subs.

Japan used bombers to sink that brit battleship of Matapan something.

US used Catalinas and Liberators against german subs.

So I say, keep the rules as it.

  • In my game, the players can buy light bomber.
Attack at 3 against ground units and attack at 2 against warships.

    The bombers cannot attack warships.
But the Condor and the B24 are special units.
German and USA player can buy some after the fifth round.

  • about 17 japanese Level bombers sunk the prince and whales and repulse in 1941

Bombers used in AA50 and not played with house rules for specialty units like torpedo Bombers/dive bombers and the like can be interpreted as more than standard “bombers”. So if your playing the OOB with no other units than the idea is not realistic to restrict bombers, nor is it balanced.  However, as i said of you got other pieces that take up this slack, then it could work.

Yeah, just watched a show on the military channel about the battle of singapore and saw that the Japanese Bombers sunk them quickly.

It brings some interesting changes to the game, but because they do represent bombers as a whole, you’d probably be better served to get alternate pieces to represent various types of bombers if you wanted to be more accurate and versatile.

  • Reduction in ability in sea zone attacks….

    Strategic Bombers (revised):

Strategic Bombing raid capability is unchanged from regular rules.
Bombing attacks are changed as follows:
Attacks against land units changed to hit on 3 or a 4 if started on air base.
Attacks in sea zones changed to hit on 2 or a 3 if started on air base.
    Defending bombers:
If bombers are on an air base in a territory that is being attacked by land units only,  they have special ability to retreat up to 2 spaces to any other friendly territory not under attack.  If they retreat to a territory without an air base, then on their next turn, they can only move in the non-combat phase.

Keeping a consistent combat value as much as possible is better.
    What about this?
    StB
    Attack 2
    Defense 1
Gets +2A if starting from an Air Base against land units.
    Cost 12

    TacB
    Attack 4
    Defense 3
    No more combined arms.
    Cost 11
(This is the true bomber against enemy units.)
