AARHE 1939 - Need strategy to keep italy from losing fleet early

  • Our group is finding it difficult, when starting at 1939 set ups, to maintain an effective and continued attack by Italy against Africa, mainly because of the Italian fleet being decimated by turn 5-6 by United Kingdom.  Particularly with the addition of Cruisers.

With the UK starting with a sizable atlantic fleet, including 3 CR 2 BB 3 DD, we are finding it little trouble for GBR to annihilate Italy’s fleet by turn 5 or so.  This is giving the UK control of Central Med and stopping any Italian tps of getting troops to Africa.

Germany is little help at this stage without moving its fleet out of the baltic and exposing that area.  Even Germany’s subs seem unable to stop the UK onslaught  this early (at least the ones, if any, surviving UK’s cruisers and destroyers).

IL: As you play this version often, what tips do you have of neutralizing UK’s fleet early on and maintaining a steady supply of Italian Troops .

OK i am assuming your playing on the 1939 map correct? The British are coming in due to a failed German naval buys. Amm i too assume Germany bought null subs and ships? or that Germany didn’t clear out as many UK ships as possible?

I need to see the big picture. How was Germany doing in Russia? where the axis basically trading a kill Soviet ASAP all land buys and ignoring any german naval buys or duties? please clarify.

You can always target Turkey diplomatically or militarily and create a land bridge to Africa. What by the way is Italys starting fleet?

OK if you understand the rules correctly, you will know that the western allies cannot enter the Baltic unless they control certain territory’s including Denmark and Norway…so why are you afraid to come out. Perhaps its the fact that the German navy is doing nothing in your game so all the pressure is going against Italy by default?

Germany needs to buy a couple more subs for the first 2-3 turns to replace the loses from her turn one sortie, where she clobbers both British and french naval, while she deals with Poland.

also, Italy should buy some floaters ( cruiser and transport) or seriously converting turkey or spain…turkey would give the axis the land bridge, and spain would give Gibraltar straight, forcing British ships to take shots while passing into medd.

perhaps Italy can make subs and place them and her fleet in strike range just ready to engage British ships entering.  Remember excess subs over defending ASW still get the first strike bonus.

  • Italian starting navy

    1 Battleship
    1 Cruiser
    1 Destroyer
    1 Submarine
    1 Transport

recommend: 1 dd or 1 CA, plus transport

    German navy
    1 Battleship
    1 Cruiser
    2 Destroyer
    3 Submarine
    1 Transport

recommend: you buy lots of subs

British starting navy ( in europe area)
    2 Battleship
    2 Cruiser
    3 Destroyer
    1 Submarine
    2 Transport

Note: They will buy whatever they have lost plus carrier and transports, but if you look weak they will build cruisers and destroyers and take you out.

on the basis of this and the fact that the German player must make as many attacks on UK naval with sea and air elements, i really don’t see how this is happening unless:

    1. your not making these attacks at all
    2. Germany is not buying any naval
    3. Your not making any other threats and basically parking the fleet in the Baltic.

You have the tools to make the british player hurt for like 3 turns, during that time you need to use your naval to attack and you need to buy subs and other naval to keep the thing going for a while, while you get the land build up for the Soviets.
