I think organized religion is one of the best inventions ever.  keeps people in line.  If there were no religion who could argue with me that what i am doing is wrong.  I would just say thats your own made up morality and you have no legitimate reasons for thinking yours is better than my morality, as i rob and steal to my benefiet.  I would only see my robbing and stealing as a good thing because it helps me.  Moral probably not, but who could say otherwise?  (looking at it from a secular point of view).

It might not fit all but it fits most major religions that i know of. Christianity/islam/judaism/hindoeism/budism.

well, you leave out Nirvana, and the Hindu “equivalent” whose name escapes me, when you limit it to Heaven/Hell and Reincarnation. Also, you leave out Confucianism, Daoism, and Shinto as major religions. What about Sikhism? these are all major religions by numbers.

most western religions are based around X supreme beings. There is no supreme being in Buddhism, not in the sense that you have. There are “Gods” but again, not in the sense you refer to.

Jen, I see your point about TV, but Uncle Milty, Lucille Ball and “Sports Night” make me vote that one out.
My vote would lean more toward “The TV Remote”(forefather of “The Universal Remote.”)  It lead to surfing, more dictarorships of the TV viewing time and bigger couch potato(e)s.  :-)

MONEY and CAPITALIZM, are both very high on my worst list. People who ain’t got money hate those who have money. Those who do have money feel guilty and want to destroy “The System” or find some way to make up for “The Sin of Being Rich.”

RELIGION , Come on!  We’e discussed this many times over.  Hitler klled the Jews.  He was working on the Catholics and Protestants, too.  Lenin and Stalin virtuallly eliminated religion from the USSR(the State their religion.)  China still persecutes religions to this day.

Muslims attacked nonbelivers.  Convert or die!  Catholics attacked in retaliation, not just to regain Jerusalem(the Holy Land.)

Nirvana is a form of afterlife isnt it. The names are not of any concern for their definition. Different languages different words same definition. Afterlife = something after this life

in the sense that it is something after this life, yes. but otherwise no, no in any sense that you are thinking of. you refer only to heaven/hell, and reincarnation. nirvana is a concept wholly different from all three.

I still say the spork.  You guys are saying TV, computer, religion, money, etc. in the mind set of bad things those things have done.  Im saying spork based on overall usefullness……and the spork definately wins.  The spork is a piece of shit.  Worst invention ever.  Even Ghandi would have a personal vendetta towards the spork and its hard to get on Ghandis bad side.  The only thing that contests the spork for supremacy is the “keytar” (that stupid instrument thats supposed to be a keyboard played like a guitar.)

Not entirely correct. Power is the root of all evil. There will always be people that want to be more important. In our current world money almost always equals power.

Yeah. If you can handle something honestly, including the means to get it, it is not evil. But if you are driven to get it illegally, or improperly use it, it has become an evil.

Edit: On topic, nerve gasses come to mind, along with the entire Hollywood culture. They have no redeeming value. Nerve gasses are a horrible way to die, and Hollywood is filled with a bunch of rich people who think the world whould bow down to them because they are pretty, and also that whatever they say is right, even if it is completely unsupported, unproven, or proven wrong. It is a leech to our nation’s intellect.

Rap would have to come in third, becuase of the immorality it promotes.

Fourth would be politics in general, where normally smart people lose all intelligence, morality and normal thought to win an election, and then spend their time arguing over issues that their party supports, even if they don’t.

1.  Nerve gas is a tool.  If someone shoots you, do you blame the gun?

2.  The culture of Hollywood arises from the people of the United States of America and the world.  Who made them rich?  Who made them famous?  Why are they subject to paparazzi, and stalking, and unpleasant and critical commentaries?  The people.

Also, you may not approve of Hollywood stars being political activists, but at least they are devoting their personal time and energy to causes they believe in.  I’d like to point out that EVERYONE usually thinks what they say is right; Hollywood stars are no exception - the exception is the fact that Hollywood stars are attacked for expressing personal beliefs.

3.  You can’t really blame rap for promoting immorality.  It is easy for a politician to blame rap, it is easy for the media to condemn rap.  But the fact of the matter is, the only reason why rap can promote “immorality” is because there is a ready audience for it.  Watch any violent movie or TV show; some Afro-Americans or Hispanics, or sometimes Caucasians go on screen and do violent things as rap music plays.  But is it rap that is causing the TV show or movie to be violent?  Is it rap that causes people to watch those TV shows or movies?  I say no.  People are being primed to accept immoral behavior; rap is simply a small and disproportionately discriminated-against portion of the cause of the problem.

4.  Politicians are often dedicated people that got into politics to try to improve the state of the world.  Regrettably, the media concentrates on focusing on the controversial things a small minority of politicians say and do, and on “issues” rather than things that could change the lives of the American people.  (Although I don’t blame the media entirely for this; they do have to sell their stories to stay in business).  To say that politicians are all immoral is hardly true.  The fact of the matter is, politics by its nature involves people, and when you have a multitude of people, you must have a multitude of concessions to attain any progress.

Is it fair for someone to ask for concessions all the time, but be absolutely unwilling to make any concessions in return?  Is it possible for a group of people that pursue no common goal to make progress?  If you say “no” to those questions, you understand what a politician must do.  A politician must sometimes support positions that he or she does not personally believe in, because a politician must be willing to MAKE concessions as well as ask for them.  Because concessions are made, politicians can work together to make progress.

If anything, politicians should be even MORE willing to argue for issues they do not personally believe in.

To the others:

1. I was talking about how bad of a way it is to be killed by nerve gas. It is a tool, but a horrible one. How can something that one drop of will kill you be good?

2. I was more talking about the self-infatuation that Hollywood stars have because all the people like them. Just because they are famous doesn’t mean they are better than the rest of the world. Also, they often use their popularity to say statement that other people couldn’t get away with without supporting it, while they can.

3. Rap is bad because it is used to influence all the people who listen to it. Many of the poor in the inner city ghettos have nothing else to follow, so the rap music becomes what they follow. Since rap glorifies drugs, unsafe sex, immorality, ect., they start practicing what rap music says, andt ehn turn into expensive criminals.

4. Perhaps politicians are dedicated. I may have been wrong on that one. However, you can’t deny the amount of game playing that goes on without anything getting done. Also, since many of them do act based on the wishes of the voters just to get votes, you have to question if they really care.
