J 3 and G3 Attack

I generally favor a G2 attack as there are very little Russian units on the board, the more rounds you wait to attack the more infantry they can stack in Moscow, Ideally on a G2 attack you can be attacking Moscow or on the brink of attacking when the allies threaten to land. The longer you wait to attack the longer you will have to fight a 2 front war.

If Germany is going Barbarossa, I usually buy the following on the first three turns:

US1: CV, DD, Fighter save 1 IPC
US2: CV, Fighterx2
US3: TTx4, Sub

That way you can use 3 transports to pick up your 3 mechs and drop them on Brazil.  Your other 2 transports and your other navy can drop the remaining US starting units in Gibraltar.  This can be reinforced with a UK air base and fighters and any ships they may have available to protect against axis counters.

I did read the entire thread. However I have to say that imo manstein’s post looks like the only thought through strategy to me.
I cannot believe that waiting till round 6 to have a least a chance of an invasion in Europe can be a good strategy. I have to admit that I mostly played Axis so far but I think it is key to disturb the German and the Italian AS EARLY as possible! We need to keep in mind that also an NO is linked to Gibraltar, so leaving this for 2 rounds just gives Italy extra resources.

Thanks manstein, to me your strategy is an optimized way to get the maximum as quick as possible to Europe!

I really doubt that mass bomber early can be the way to be. Sacrificing bombers vs fleet or using them as cannonfodder in Moscow is wast of IPCs. I think the key is to get a landing in Europe which cannot be countered easily in the next turn. THEN you need air to attack further territories or fighters to defend.

However as I said I still need to get experience with US. I will certainly go the “drop quickly” way:-)

I looked it up. Yes, you are right. It only applies to major ICs, so a minor one could indeed be built in Finland.

Meant One map only for a shorter game.was talking Europe, but have a few problems with Pacific concerning set up, especially
Vis a Vis missing Russian Inf. In pacific only Japan should not be allowed to empty Manchuria and Korea as Russia borders them. Played a friend who sailed his Us fleet to Australia on T2 , before my T3 DOW. Was legitimate, but I feel it should not be. I now accept T2 DOW is seen as all as best. Would like to see a clarification of stand alone NOs and starting set ups. Sorry if I sound unclear.

Nine transports is a huge waste of IPC in the russian theatre, if you going to attack russia i would rather just split the IPC between Tanks and Mech. Infantry. The only reason I would ever do this, would be too for-stall russia and ready troops and next turn come back and the fallowing turn drop on England with favorable odds based on the units one would buy in those turns. This also only applies to a Global game of Axis an Allies…

In the original game, it was thought (by players I spoke with and myself anyway) that a carrier unit represented a carrier, a couple escort carriers, a few destroyers and a cruiser or two.  A battleship represented the same, but with the battleship replacing the carrier in the line up.  Submarines represented 3 submarines and transports represented 3 troop-ships.  or whatever.  Infantry represented mechanized units (Jeeps, Halftracks) and Artillery.

After years and years of play, with the board growing more and more complex and with the prices of things changing with the addition of other things, my assumptions at least, have changed.

Carrier = Carrier, 2 Escort Carriers
Battleship = Battleship
Destroyer = 3 Destroyers
Submarine = 5 Submarines
Cruiser = 2 Cruisers

Infantry = 1 Battalion or Company
Artillery = 1 Artillery Company
Mechanized = Crap on the field (jeeps, Halftracks, Meat Wagons, whatever the trash is the Infantry is using that they might be able to strap a gun too.)

Fighter - Fighter Squadron down from Fighter Wing
Tactical Bomber - Some unknown fighter type, in squadron form
Bomber - Bomber Wing

As for the Carrier having no defense, I still claim they should have AA ability on Round 1, before combat starts.  Give them no defense or attack value otherwise is fine with me.
