    Now that dice have been rolled I have some feedback.

    Why submerge in the first round in both 106 and 110? Unless I roll really well (as it happens I did in 110 but only with planes), all submerging does is deny you a defending shot. Even in the case of 110 this game, a defending sub hit would have meant I needed to lose another plane. Only a 1 in 6 chance of course.

    Why put an AC in 98 when for the same price you can put a sub and a ftr on Malta? A tac or a bomber might be even better but costs 1 or 2 more IPCs respectively. This bid allows you to attack SZ97 UK1 without needing to bring in the CV. There is a risk that the Italians don’t hit and you need to bring in the CV to catch the 1 ftr from London but it is worth taking. Some crazy Axis players may even scramble to such an attack and reduce that risk further.

    In 106 I don’t want to take the 11% chance the Germans get two hits. Albeit I am giving up a 16.5% chance of getting a hit on Round 1 of combat with the UK SS I am counting on the counterattack to eliminate the German subs and clear the sea zone. With UK SS, DD, Bmb vs 2 German SS there is a 96% chance of clearing the sea zone. Without that UK SS that drops from 96% to 70% against 2 German subs. Again, I play risk averse, so I am trying to remove bad things from happening more than I am trying to get good things to happen via the dice.

    In 110 you make a good point since you did not bring the German BB, I should have paid more attention to that. Since the Germans, nor UK, do not have a destroyer present the UK sub and 2 German subs are firing in the “Surprise Strike” phase. Therefore, for any German SS hits, UK may assign those hits to the Cruisers and Battleship and the UK SS is safe from destruction since in the General Combat phase there was no German battleship, just air units. In the General Combat phase, you have to assign all possible hits but that is not true for the Surprise Strike phase as the casualties are removed immediately. Good thing for me to remember in the future.

    Because I am not trying to increase the ATTACK on SZ97. I am trying to increase the DEFENSE of the UK fleet in SZ97.

    In our game you made the attack on the UK fleet even though it was only a 30% chance of success; and won handily. That was a huge setback for the Allies and easily could have cost me the game. So instead of giving Italy a 30% chance to dramatically alter the game, two carriers will make it a 0% chance of success. Therefore, I assume an Axis opponent will not make that attack. Comparing the two 97 UK fleets to the expected Germany air counterattack the standard 1 carrier defense kills 2.7 planes or $27 of German air units while the 2 carrier defense kills 6.2 planes or $63 worth of planes or $36 more in German air units. The increased dollar loss by UK is also $36 (AC + 2 fighters) and I am happy to trade UK units even steven with German units.

    Therefore, the 30% chance of Italy making a huge play is removed from the game and the Germans will be hesitant to make the air attack, and if they do on average the Allies break even, so it seems to be a good solution.

    I am not normally one to complain about dice, but that was ridiculous! 3 planes down J1 and I didn’t do anything weird.

    Interesting. I see what you are thinking here. It may have been a 30% attack but if I didn’t do it the remaining Italian fleet was toast. I doubt I ran the calculator or I wouldn’t have had done the amphibious assault on Greece. Although if you tried to preserve the CV that would have reduced your odds massively and if you didn’t do that then the Luftwaffe could have cleaned up the survivors easily. I guess the French fleet could have reinforced but only 2 ships.

    Yeah, nothing weird and the rolls went against you. I just lost a battle against the Philippines on J1 vs GeneralDissaray. I pulled back with just a tactical remaining and his fighter survived!

    Sometimes the Dice are mean which is why I try and limit them as much as possible but there is only so much you can do. Some games are going to be lost vs the Dice; that is just that.
