to me it would have to the junkers ju-87…that sound it made when coming in for the attack was deafening and it would terrify you on the ground
Which Aircraft Carrier is this
-
My dad passed away I’m going through my family pictures and came across the picture from my grandfather’s WW2 service.
My grandfather served in Europe, so this aircraft carrier would have been in the Atlantic.
-
Sorry for your loss. So is that the Ranger ?
-
So sad. Yeah, it could be the Ranger. It could’ve also been one of the Random Interchangeable Escort Carriers (hope you appreciated my joke, sorry, but I can’t/don’t memorise the escort carrier names, only the bigger ships).
-
@abworsham4 I’m far from sure, but I would guess it is an Essex (all commissioned in the Atlantic). Thus, I’m also guessing the photo was taken in the United States of America.
-
@superbattleshipyamato I do know this was taken in New York Harbor.
-
@abworsham4 In October 1943.
-
Cool!
-
I read it’s probably the Intrepid. Was launched in April 43 in New York Harbor.
-
Very likely.

According to Wikipedia, the USS Intrepid was launched at Newport News in Virginia (not at New York), and it sounds like it was either in the Carribbean for shakedown or in Norfolk during October 1943.
Still according to Wikipedia, no Esssex class carriers were launched in New York before 1944.
If the time of the foto is indeed October 1943, I’d say that either this carrier is not an Essex (which is however still my guess) or it was not taken at New York as I tend to exclude that an Essex class carrier would be at New York unless it was built there.

Sorry to hear about your dad, ABW. I remember going through some of my family pictures after my mom passed away and kicking myself for not having asked her more about some of those.
Anyway, after some searching, I’m thinking that the ship in your picture could be USS San Jacinto (CVL-30). That ship was launched at New York on 26 September 1943 and Commissioned on 15 November. So what we could be seeing in the October picture, with cranes on either side of the ship, could be the New York Shipbuilding Corporation being busy finishing the ship.
In the left part of your picture, in the background, there appears to be a large and long building with structures on its roof. Here’s a picture of USS Kitty Hawk in 1960:
Now maybe, but this is just speculation, the building in the background of that picture is the same building as the one in yours, taken from a different angle. Rather a wild guess of mine and other details may not match, but things would also have changed at the wharf between 1943 and 1960.

Ok. Thanks for correcting me

@abworsham4 I want to thank all of you for helping answering this question I’ve had.

Makes sense.
