Depends on the intended audience.

For the more accessible games intended for 3+ in person playing(IE: 1941/1942SE), I would say late 1941 (not spring 41) would be the best time to start, for two reasons.

-The Japanese blitz/pearl harbor is a pretty dramatic start, and not having Japan start with a bunch of conquests paces their advance better.

-Russian winter counter offensive: Assuming it’s a multiplayer game, and someone is playing Russia alone, it’s more fun for Russia to have at least one turn on the offensive before defending for the rest of the relevant game time. Back and forth is more fun then defense only. The 1942 German setup is good from a game design point of view. Russia starts with positioning advantage vs superior German economy, which has superior might to the allies initially but inferior economy. It’s a double layer of asymmetric warfare.

For veteran players, the earlier the better really. An official game with a ~1936 start to provide for varied initial game states would be interesting, if nearly impossible to balance.

To fit the entire G40 game pieces, you will need 2 boxes and that will include space for alot of HBG printed pieces, etc including roundels, etc

Wow. I had inquired in previous threads on this forum and had only been directed to versions that had multiple personal touches on them. This is way better than mine! Lol, I’ll take it though.

Do you have any guidance on printing your own map? I hear neoprene is pretty sharp.

I’m not averse to printing a map at all, and the map files I’ve seen are indeed waaaay better. Truth is I just recently purchased the 1940 games and would like to get some use out of them before I abandon them for the master map. And will definitely look for the sticker paper my next trip to wallyworld. Thanks for the suggestion DK.

With the complexity of modifications you’re attempting, you might want to illustrate a map by hand and then scan it. Once you have the territory proportions edited on paper and scanned, you can than modify and touchup in the design programs you mentioned. Your task seems very ambitious and I hope to see your final version some day, in the mean time… Imperious Leader may have some advise as he is the most experienced map maker of us all.

––IMHO there is no RIGHT or WRONG decisions as far as storage boxes go. Whatever meets any particular individuals needs and he likes, for whatever reasons, is the best for him! I do enjoy seeing everyone else’s ideas & methods. Lots of creative, knowledgable people on this site!  :-D
