You have to remember that the rail capacity in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South America is only one unit. Linking Egypt and South Africa would only cost 4 IPP so that’s not too bad considering you can only move one unit. Going from India to Egypt though would cost 10 IPP because of the terrain and one more link. That might be too steep a cost to only move 1 unit. It would cost 18 IPP to complete the link from the US to South America. If the rail capacity were unlimited then such links might be ok, but spending that much to move only 1 unit is probably not worth it. Especially a long link that can be damaged or broken by the enemy in an exposed place like the Middle East. I really like the idea of Cape Town to Cairo though.
V3 capital ship repair questions

The rules state that each repair at a shipyard takes up a production slot. The dockyard rules simply state that they can repair 1(minor), or up to 5(major) ships. Nothing about production slots. Does a production slot mean it needs to use a factory slot? If so, how would you use a dockyard on an island for repairs? Or are repairs not related to factory production? Can a major shipyard, only connected to a minor factory, still repair 5 ships?

The production slot refers to the shipyard, not the factory. In other words you could place 5 infantry AND 5 ships at a territory with a major shipyard and a major factory. The shipyard is a factory for ships but needs to be connected to the factory for supply purposes.
If you had a major shipyard and wanted to repair 2 capital ships you would be left with only 3 slots in your shipyard to build ships. You must be connected to a major factory for your shipyard to be operable.
You can’t have a major shipyard with only a minor factory. It requires a major factory to to have a major shipyard. My best guess if you were cut off from your major factory and were left with only a minor factory connected your shipyard you would have to downgrade it to a minor shipyard until they were reconnected again.
Dockyards don’t have to be connected to factories. Repairing a capital ship at a dockyard doesn’t take a factory slot.

@GeneralHandGrenade Excellent! Thank you, GHG.

Completely changed my understanding of shipyards!
