Combat Hit Differential Summary :
Woo hoo! Italy has 27 income. It’s 5 pu N.O.'s are valuable, but hard to keep. I was surprised by the UK unprovoked DOW, as it gives the Axis an option. But it did give UKPac 2 wartime N.O.s. and now I see ANZ got 3 N.O.s. I was afraid that you found some way to sink unguarded Japanese transports. Also surprised by China’s retreat north instead of the standard retreat west. But it does draw Japanese troops and planes away from Burma. And makes it impossible to ignore, which I could do if you went west.
The Italian can opener started off great. But the AES gamble failed. I see Pacific allies retreated rather than fight. My opponents in my last few game didn’t waste transports and units vainly trying to take Japanese isles that I could easily recover. In the past, I used to counterattack like that, but I see where its better to build up forces instead for a more lasting counterattack.
Aha, I learn something new from every game. I never saw the benefit of the rule that the U.S. fleet could move to sz102 before war. Ships couldn’t go any further than if they stayed at base. But now I see that carrier based planes can reach Gibraltar if they start from sz102. Very interesting (with a German accent).
I figured the Japanese would attack on Round 3 any way; so UK-Pac and ANZAC might as well achieve some objectives (and get 6 extra IPCs each).
The AES attack stood about a 45% chance of succeeding; 10% chance of a draw, and a 45% chance of failing. So the result was not unexpected and much needed boost to ALLY morale.
Yes, SZ 102 give the US fleet an advantage in attacking Gibraltar and the flexibility of sending fighters to the UK in case they are needed.
