  • I knew that was a risky battle but I felt like I needed it. It didn’t pay off, so I concede here. Very well played, good game!

    You had asked what I thought I had done as a mistake earlier: for background, I haven’t ever really played Russia Restricted before these two games, and on the previous game I had an easy enough time because you made the G1 purchase of building up your navy, which meant that even though the dice were against me early on in that game, I still could easily use the Allies production to surround and contain Germany easily in Europe.

    This game I underestimated the amount of force I would need to bring on Germany without having had that initial Russian attack but with Germany going heavily on troops as they should, and I diverted my Russian forces in an attempt to keep Japan back longer, which was a mistake. As a result, Germany never did get contained and you had freedom to push out in Eastern Europe throughout the whole game. I do believe that even with Russia Restricted that the Allies have a strong enough lead but I didn’t do the best job demonstrating that because you are certainly an able opponent and capitalized very well on my mistake there. I did still very much enjoy the game, though!



  • Thanks for that analysis, I appreciate that.

    I made two mistakes myself and really regret the one I just made. The first was not throwing in a tank on the attack with five bombers into the mid-east a few turns back. The other mistake I noticed just before posting the comment about the AA gun last night. I forgot that you had a tank in Egypt and I should not have purchased a tank and an AA gun. I should have purchased two fighters. I could have very easily done this as I saved 11 IPC and would only have needed to reduce my inf purchases by one to complete this purchase. Five fighters would have made the odds much more favorable, in the ballpark of 50/50 in which case I doubt you would have attacked at all and your army would have done other things and otherwise be intact. My apologies, I feel I should have paid for that mistake. Instead, I had hot dice.

    As I stated a few turns back, this is and perhaps always will be the coolest game of classic I have every played regardless of who would win and I still stand by that. Thank you for pointing me toward the battle calculator and helping me understand the dice much better than I had before. You have really sharpened up my game. This weekend I am going to an AnA tourney to play some anniversary and I am bringing that calc with me. It is essential to immaculate play and I dont know how I got on without it before.

    I also learned the word “penultimate”.



  • Since I have made the videos, I concede that the axis are at a disadvantage using no optional rules. The attack on Ukraine and the Baltic fleet is too much for Germany to handle. I don’t think it is impossible to win, but probably in the ballpark of 75-80% loss average. I now think that RR is essential to fair play. I’m open to the idea that the Axis might still need a boost as well and I have been contemplating several “non-invasive”, no bid adjustments to the “at start” setup to adjust for that but I will need to log a few more games at least and study the stats of those games. I also have a strong inclination that much depends on the first turn (in terms of die roll between the Axis and Allies).



  • I too definitely really enjoyed the game! And yes, I agree that the first turn is pretty much decisive of how the rest of the game will play out, but sometimes games can surprise you too.
