In case you haven’t already seen it, here’s the unboxing video. Hopefully, I’ll have time this weekend (I know, it’s after the release date) to take some detailed photos of the components.

  • From what I’ve seen, the non-zombie, non-dice or cards components seem to me to be the same as the recent Anniversary reprint (so, P-38s for the US instead of the F4F Wildcats, etc.), except for no Cruisers for the navies. Does that jive with what you’ve seen?

I’m so terrible with the side by side comparisons of the pieces but all the components seem familiar.

I will take photos of all the pieces. October was busy. September would’ve been so much better for me to do all this. Good news is, more info to come. Bad news, for me, is (except the interview with Scott) you’ll probably see all that you need elsewhere on Friday and Saturday.

The only difference I noted was that the UK pieces are cast in a greenyer-brown than khaki, even that might have been an optical illusion w the darker board.  The dice are all new.

  • I didn’t have time over the weekend to take detailed notes about the sculpts in my game box, but from a quick look it appears that the zombies game uses (at least partially) a pre-Global 1940 sculpt set.  For example:

    • The UK and the USSR use the American 105mm howitzer as an artillery piece and the American Liberty ship as a naval transport.

    • The German artillery piece is the old small version of the 88mm FLAK (the one dating back to the old A&A Europe game, which incorrectly used this anti-aircraft / anti-tank weapon as a field artillery piece).

    • The USSR uses the British-design Illustrious-class aircraft carrier.  Admittedly, so does Global 1940…but note that A&A 1941 has a distinctive Soviet carrier sculpt, which would have been nice to throw into AAZ.

Oddly enough, the sculpt silhouetttes shown in the AAZ rulebook are mostly (based on just a quick look) the same ones as in the Global 1940 2nd edition and/or 1942 2nd edition rulebook, even though the sculpts themselves (as I’ve noted above) aren’t necessarily the ones used in those games.  This caught my attention because I looked at the rulebook before opening the sculpt packages, and I was excited to see from the rulebook that the USSR supposedly had its own distinct carrier…but in actual fact, the sculpt itself is just the standard British design.

I got my copy on Saturday and I was able to compare sculpts on Sunday. I was right, all of the sculpts in AAZ are the same as what the Big 5 had in the Anniversary Reprint, sans Cruisers. I compared the sculpts in AAZ to both the AA50Reprint and AA '42 Second Ed. Most of those sculpts will be the same: US Sherman tanks, German Bismarck BBs, UK Halifax bombers, Japanese Zero fighters, Russian Gnevny DDs, etc…

But where '42 Second Ed. and AA50R differ, AAZ goes with the AA50R sculpts. Which I thought might be the case when I first started seeing pictures of the pieces for the game. But now, I can confirm that. Below are the places where '42 Second Ed. and AA50R differ:

    Germany
    Arty-Anni Ger 8.8cm Flak
    Arty-42 2nd Ed Ger 10.5cm LeFH 18
    Germany
    United Kingdom
    Arty-Anni USA 105mm Howitzer
    Arty-42 2nd Ed UK Ordnance Quick-Firing 25 Pounder
    Destroyer-Anni USA Fletcher Class
    DD-42 2nd Ed UK S Class
Submarine-Anni USA Gato / Ray Class
    SS-42 2nd Ed UK Truculent/T Class
    United Kingdom
    Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
Submarine-Anni USA Gato / Ray Class
    SS-42 2nd Ed USSR Srednyaya/S-Class
    Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

I noticed the disconnect with the pictures of the class in the AAZ rule book versus what we actually got. If you look at the '41 rule book, you see the same disconnect. I wouldn’t be surprised if Hasbro/WotC/AH have a standard “A&A Rule Book” reference that they modify as needed, which has the same pictures for units in each rule book made.

I’m not sure if I’m remembering correctly, but I think the 1941 rulebook was produced in two versions, one of which showed silhouettes of the actual 1941-specific sculpts in the game and one of them showing silhouettes from other rulebooks.

    Can anyone confirm this?
    Why was this done?

  • Official Q&A

The Rulebook had some errors in it in the initial print run, so they were corrected in later print runs.  The incorrect silhouettes were one of those errors.
