Autumn Battle of Britain - 16th September - SEE BATTLE REPORT

  • Another day of blood, sweat and laughter in Derbyshire, UK. Currently have 5 to 7 attendees, so able to accommodate 3 to 5 additional players. Likely to play 2 games - being any of 1942.2, Anniversary or 1914.

Anyone interested in joining us should reply to this thread or PM Private Panic.

(P.S. The Winter event will be on 27th January)

  • @Private:

Another day of blood, sweat and laughter

That’s actually an excellent A&A adaptation of Churchill’s famous “blood, toil, tears and sweat” line.  It correctly leaves out the “toil” part, because playing A&A shouldn’t feel like work, and it also correctly leaves out the “tears” part, which in principle shouldn’t occur during an A&A game…unless, of course, someone gets a really really really bad dice roll.

Unless Leo is playing Marc. Then there are always tears!

  • Stop it Adam. No one needs to know what a cry baby you are!

  •

  • Had five players and decided to play 1942.2. Mark / Credulous (Japan) and Dale (Germany) took on Dave (UK), Tomas / Dukla passer (US) and Adam / PP (Russia). No bids. Sides allocated at random.

The game started with a poor R opening move. PP got confused between maps and attempted his usual Anniversary attack on Baltic States, even though we were playing 42.2. Disaster. The Baltic States attack failed. Even though everything else went into West Russia, this left G with something like even odds on R’s forces there. G had amazing luck in its counter attack against West Russia. Thus started one of the two key characteristics of this game - G’s dice throwing was consistently amazing!

Despite this, Russia was generously supported by its allies and by mid-game, G was struggling. It’s position in West Russia was only tenable with J fighter support. The US poured bombers across the Atlantic. Unfortunately they never did truly significant damage to G’s factories. On one occasion, though, 5 bombers did get to attack a G tank and 2 bombers. Marvellous! Until G threw the dice and killed 3 US bombers with 3 dice!

The UK also got its fleet off Europe’s coasts, supported by the US navy. Landings in France, Norway and Leningrad followed.

The Allies began to think they were winning.

Unfortunately, the above was only achieved by the US under investing in the Pacific and the UK’s India builds trudging north to the Caucasus. This gave J an easy ride. Mark took full advantage of this and managed to attack Moscow with 1 tank, 9 figs and 8 bombers (I think). This sacrificial attack gave G odds on Moscow, with 40 units against 37. G again threw amazing dice and won with something like 10 tanks and 5 planes remaining. This stymied the potential UK counter attack with 1 tank and 6 planes.

So the second key characteristic was excellent play by Mark, whose J rescued the game for the Axis. 8-)

    Mental!
