The 26th April 1937 saw Hitler’s Condor Legion bomb the Northern Spanish Basque town of Guernica. It was seen as a proving ground for the Nazi party’s new Luftwaffe and much experience was to be garnered from the Spanish Civil War. The Condor Legion was led by Oberstleutnant Wolfram Freiherr Von Richthofen(The Red Baron’s cousin) and under Nationalist control. Guernica was behind the front lines and was a town of about 7000 population. The bombing was in waves and exact casualty reports are unknown, but probably numbered around 1000. The Legion was a mix of Fighters and Medium Bombers, all names we know: 109s(B not Es), HE 51s (biplanes), DO 17s, JU52s and HE111s. There were also some Italian Fiat Fighters and the versatile SM79.
The outcome of the bombing was to demoralise the townsfolk and lead to its falling to Franco’s Nationalists on the 29th April.
This bombing raid was to be a preview of what was to happen between 39-45 to larger cities like Warsaw, London,Berlin, Dresden and finally Tokyo.

Fabiano Caruana has become the first American to challenge for the title of world champion since Bobby Fischer. Go Fabi! Or rather study hard until November, then go Fabi!
-
Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana will meet before at this event, starting on Saturday:

He played very well in the Candidates, but his results have varied significantly over the years, with many ups and downs. Overall, I’d say that Carlsen will likely retain his title.

I used to be a pretty good chess player in college. Never got competitive, but have always thought one day I might. But not sure where to start.
Who do I register with? Where can some games online to start building my rating?
Would be interested to know!

You can try https://blitz.chessbase.com/ or http://freechess.org/
I never actually registered there but sometimes play as a guest. I’ve recently preferred Chessbase over Freechess because Chessbase will also give you a rating as a guest, though it frequently forgets it. It’s not necessarily just blitz, you can set your own time limit, though blitz typically attracts more opponents.
My main reason for not registering is that I could spend too much time there. It’s quite addictive. -
OMG i didnt know we had Chess players! Great we should have regular Chess news

Here is another very good and free site:
https://lichess.org/
https://lichess.org/aboutApart from playing human vs. human or human vs. computer (‘Stockfish’ engine) you can even get an analysis of your games, there.

I really love chess. Im not that great, but I did come 1st place in a tournament, winning myself 50$. Personally I like Chess24.com. But there are also others out there. Your choice. :-D
-
I do chess.com. I’d also give the edge to Magnus, he’s a beast, and a classy champ to boot. Either way I hope it leads to an increase in popularity in American chess.
-
Yes, I hope so too.

Agreed, lichess.org is very good. You can even copy-paste any game that you played elsewhere as long as you have it in PGN format and lichess will analyze it for you.

I’m not too surprised that A&A and chess might attract the same people. There’s a definite nerd factor to both games. I also wasn’t too surprised to find that that quite a few of my colleagues (I work in IT) have played chess, and that some like board games in general.
I haven’t played competitive chess for 25 years now, but back then, I was a strong player. -
Is there a central rating league or board that everyone recognizes that I should register with?
Or are there multiple leagues etc?

There is an official platform maintained by the FIDE

Yeah, like chess24.com. It has a wierd rating system. It goes up to like a 3900 rating. Weird huh?

They’ve got an interview with Caruana on chess.com. Can you imagine a chance to be remembered with all the chess greats…Morphy, Lasker, Capablanca, Fischer, Kasparov ect…
-
Yes it’s really mind blowing.
-
It would be nice if we had a seperate chess strip. If we did we could play correspondence chess. Just my 2 cents. :-D
-
Correspondence chess is not what it used to be, with today’s software playing so much better than any human.
