In my ongoing game with Cystic Crypt (see Games Forum), I am having good results with a new strategy. As the allies I have built many bombers and many ICs. The ICs do not have AA guns, so when the Axis takes them, I am getting a free round of SBR without worrying about AA shots. Also if the Axis chooses to build an AA gun, then that’s 1 less ARM for the Allies to worry about.

Consider that I left Karelia defended by only 2 inf in Russia 3, and the axis refused to take it because if they had taken it I would have gotten 5+ SBR rolls without AA gun shots to worry about.

I guess the revelation for me during this game has been that ICs without AA guns combined with bombers can make capturing those ICs a real pain for your opponent. Of course this only works if you opponent can’t bomb you in return.

Pulling out of Eastern Europe is a deathtrap! But seriously, you’re screwed if you did and screwed if you don’t since you’re know forced to defend two separate territories along with the unbearable 3 IPC loss. But anyways, Western Europe is probably the most feasible and the most advantageous of all the territories to take with USA and UK. But if you can position your transports correctly, you can strikes all German territories at once depending what is the most heavily under-defended.

What is your game plan. What are your goals. How are you coordinating the 3 allies to achieve those goals? What are your opponents goals? How can you block him/her from achieving those goals? I am not talking about taking a capital as a goal. That is the end goal. I am talking about short term goals. (e.g, take and hold Western Europe. Hold the Yakut Sinkaing line against the Japanese for 4 turns. etc.)

What is your overall all strategy? Your goals are steps on the ladder of your strategy to victory.

When you can answer these questions, then you will find you will fare better in your games.

Lastly, be flexible. You will lose important battles. Plans will be countered. Be ready to adapt to these events. Balance risk of loss versus risk of gain. Retreat is often the best thing to do after a bad roll of the dice in a big battle. Reinforce and try again next turn. If you can’t wait for next turn, then you are being outplayed. Study and learn why.

None of them are official 3rd-Edition rules (except Submerging Subs), but they are tried & tested “House Rules” that a great many players use to even the odds & generally spice things up. You can add whatever rules you want to the game when you play with your friends, but these & many others–call them “semi-official”–have been “playtested” extensively and other players can tell you pretty accurately how they’ll affect your game.

In RR, USSR basically skips the Combat Move & Combat portions of their 1st turn, going straight to NonCombat from Purchase Units.

2-Hit BBs (grrrrrr :evil: )are exactly like GeZe said–all BBs have 2 “lives” as it were and must take 2 hits in a single battle to sink. In some versions, the BB hit only once is immediately “repaired” (restored to full strength) after the battle, in others, she stays with only 1 “life” until sunk.

Submerging Subs is more complicated. First of all, it is an official 3rd-Edition rule. In addition to its “Withdraw” ability, each SUB may also “Withdraw in Place”, that is, exit the battle after its counterattack (if any) without moving. The SUB is no longer subject to attack, but “pops up” after the enemy’s Combat round is over and remains in place until its own Combat Movement turn comes around. If it doesn’t move out of the SZ, it must do battle on its Combat round with the enemy forces. If another enemy force enters the SZ to join its allies, it must do so on Combat Move & combat occurs against your SUB–but without the other enemy units being involved since its not their turn!Otherwise, the maneuver is the same as Withdrawing, you just don’t go anywhere.

Why would you need to roll against the heavy bomber specifically? That’s not fair, because the attacker gets to choose his casualties from all the hits, whether it be during a battle or picking planes to die from AA fire. The attacker should get to “guard” his Heavy by escorting it with other planes.

DarthMaximus has it right - I’m looking to create an accurate odds calculator as part of a broader A&A AI project. For now, I’m able to manually predict the coefficients in a term of the numerator (the coefficients are the sum of a series), but I’m unable to reduce that to a straightforward calculation. Frustrating, because it’s the last piece I need. In the interim, I’ve substituted a truth table for the required coefficients, so the AI project forges onward.

The AI has two goals. First, to create a computer opponent that will give you a real fight. Then, a tool for developing new strategies. Really the same tool, just depends on how you want to run it.

Got pretty low specs for this thing. Nothing you can play over the internet, just a freebie you could download and run standalone mano AI mano.
