• Can anyone think of a possible situation in which it would be beneficial for the Axis to attack a strict neutral? Attacking turkey to get in the ME seems like an option but that would take a lot of units that could be used against Russia. Anyone have any ideas?

    It doesn’t take very many units because all you have to kill is infantry.  It also doesn’t give the Allies very much money or troops, or at least not if you take all the neutrals out in the Euro Zone.    They get like 3-4 2$ territories that take them time to liberate because you broke neutrality on the Axis turn they may not be positioned to do so.  The best positioned territories that the allies get are SA with some soldiers and Afghanistan, with 4.  Japan doesn’t have to deal with any but Mongolia and that is a separate case so it neither helps nor hurts Japan much to violate.

    Just remember the big caveats here;
    You cannot fly over the territory of a neutral until it has been violated.

    You cannot blitz through a neutral with tanks but must stop and “put up flags” as the taker, even if your units had moves left.

    You can land on allied territory, but not pro-allied until it is owned

    If you fail to take the territory, you place units of a power there, but they cannot move or fight.  They “become” or “belong” to the first friendly power to place a land unit there and so does the income.  Remember, you could in this case land friendly planes there.

    If Sweden is ever pro allies (as it would be during an Axis take of any neutral), the NO for Germany is lost.  This one is often forgotten.

  • I think it is more advantageous for the Allies to hit the neutrals then the Axis (which is kind of wrong if you think about it). The Western Allies are generally looking to crack into Europe, and Spain is a good way in. The allies can also set-up to hit multiple neutrals at roughly the same time to kill off the free axis inf, to gain control over strategic territories or just to collect the IPCs.

    Having the Axis hit the neutrals would depend on the Allies positioning, and their abilities IMO. If the Axis do it, it would be like you said UltimateChaos to gain quick access to the Mid East/Caucasus through Turkey. Depending on how things are going for Italy they might be able to help out by sailing through the Black Sea once Germany controls Turkey. You would also probably want to hit as many other true neutrals as you can (Sweden, Spain, Switz, Mongolia etc…) at the same time mainly so the allies won’t get free inf right in your own back yard (plus the income). You will also need to be ready to defend Western Europe because the US/UK will surely try to make landings in Spain. It would be next to impossible for the axis to out right def Spain, so they will need to have a counter attack set-up, and that could be dificult.

    If the allies are going hard kill Japan first and US is spending like 90% income in the Pac. that means the allies are rather weak on the Europe side. It might be worth it for the axis to hit the neutrals. If for nothing else to get the US attention away from Japan LOL.

    If you do it early enough you can take Gibraltar without the need for a navy. It does open up more landing spots for the Allies but taking the base from them is a hindrance to the American player. And if you maintain parity with the Soviets above the Black Sea you can then undercut them through the Caucasus.

    Unlikely to be worth it though. Opening up the weak points in both Spain and Gibraltar doesn’t help the Axis. And those 8 inf in Turkey are a real pain to take out.
