• So I’m playing with a couple friends, all of us new to the game, and we hit something that has caused a lot of unrest that I haven’t been able to find an answer for in the boards besides restatement of the same rule stating that IPCs are given to the country who captures the capital and all phases besides combat, combat res, and non combat are skipped. It could be we’re playing completely wrong but we believe we are doing everything correct.

    Situation:
Germany has purchased 3 units during phase 1, leaving 1 IPC left
UK captures Berlin during combat, taking the 1 IPC
Germany still has a production facility left at the mobilize phase that could potentially mobilize all units

What happens to purchased units? Are they placed during deployment or are they refunded and leftover IPC given to UK? Or are they held in reserve until Berlin is liberated then can be deployed?

The confusion is probably that you are trying to “skip” game phases unecessarily, or confusing the order of the game phases. Game phases arent skipped for everyone, only the nation that just lost its capital, and the skipping is just because of the way the purchase phase requires money in order for you to buy. The situation you outlined should not be possible according to the normal game mechanics. When a capital is taken, the defeated players money is given immediately to the nation that conquered the territory. Even if Germanys capital is liberated “immediately” by Japan, Germany will still have 0 ipcs to spend at the start of their turn. You must control a capital to collect income, but this doesn’t restore the income you just lost. So for the purposes of “skipping” phases, what is really happening is no money=no purchase=no placement (for Germany). If you liberate Berlin and manage to collect income the following round, there still shouldn’t be units dropping from Germany the round after the capital is taken. The order of game phases is fixed, if G retakes Berlin on combat then they collect income again. If they do not control Berlin at the start of their turn they wouldn’t have been able to purchase units. If Germany is purchasing units it means they have money from the previous round and control of a capital at the begining of their turn. If either of those conditions isn’t met then G has no purchase to make.

Game phases are always the same.
Each nation has its own turn in the game round and this continues in the same order by nation, even if capitals have fallen. Purchase,  Combat, Non Com, Placement, Collect Income (provided you control a capital) then on to the next nation and repeat.

Hope that clarifies things a bit

  • It looks like you’re trying to play all nations simultaneously, but you shouldn’t. The way the game is played is that Germany plays its entire turn, from purchasing new units all the way to collecting money, then UK does the same. By the time UK takes Germany, Germany’s turn is over and you’re into UK’s turn. UK should capture everything in Germany’s treasury, which should be a lot more than 1 IPC (and necessarily at least 10 since Germany owned at least its capital at the end of its turn). Germany will start its next turn with no money at all, so it will be impossible to buy anything even if they retake their capital. They also won’t be collecting any money until then.

  • Yeah, looks like we were playing it wrong Zombie69. Thanks for the help! Last time I trust 15 year old campers to figure out how a game works.
