You want the 1936 map! It has the terrain printed on it, and as I understand it, you can use it for a 1939 set up. Really the maps have slight differences. I think the Global War is moving in the direction of the 1936 map. I am trying to justify buying it now. Real question is 36" x 72" (3 ft by 6 ft) or 48" X 72" (4 ft by 8 ft) 1936 map!!! From what I gather if you have the room and are using 3D sculpts for bases, you may want the larger map.
Global war 1939 expansion set

Do you need to buy, apart from the map, the expansion set as well in order to play global war 1939? it is quite expensive and I do not want to invest another 200 dollars before I know whether I like the game or not. Or can you manage with the 1940 standard editions and perhaps some additional 1914 units?

If you have a copy each of Europe '40 and Pacific '40, as well as a copy of 1914, you should have enough pieces to be able to pull it off. Personally, I use the British from 1914 for Chinese Nationalist pieces, and the Turks as Chinese Communists. You can use the 1914 Germans as Axis minors, and the French as Vichy.
