Fighters in SBR's

  • One thing I’ve been wondering since i’m a noob is why only AA guns can fire in a SBR. Didn’t fighters try to intercept bombers in WWII??? Didn’t bombers have an escort to try to shoot the intercepters down? Shouldn’t fighters have at least a shot on the bombers? Anyone has a good suggestion?

  • yes, interceptors composed the vast majority of the effective defense against sbrs.

my take on why the game designers only included flak in the game is because allowing interceptors into the game creates many ‘loophole’ problems. i don’t think there’s a way to have a simple interceptor (and escort) rule and have it fit in well. if anyone has one, i’d be happy to hear it.

My variant of Jet fighters make it! If you don’t think so I would like to here why you think so. What are the ‘loopholes’ in my variant? 😮

  • Hello again, “B. Andersson, All Powerfiul and Supreme Game Master but not at all Egotistical when it comes to Naming Himself” 😄

Still pushing your house rules again? That’s cool, more power to ya.

The main problem I had with your house rule is that it doesn’t make sbrs statistically profitable once the opponent acquires jet fighters. I won’t bother typing out all the math since I don’t feel like it right now, but it’s not hard if anyone wants to calculate it out.

This is not the only problem but the other explanations are complicated and I’m too tired to go into it right now.

Also, I don’t remember reading about escorts. I assume you include them, right?

Also, I’m personally interested in rules that add to the realism of the game and IMHO your rule actually does the opposite. I know that many people don’t care about this but I’m a stickler for realism for my house rules.

Why is it unrealistic? Cause interceptors were present well before 1942 and didn’t have to be jets so why is it dependent on the tech advancement?

  • I thouhght about a solution where the attacker becomes the defender. Example: Britain sends a bomber and two escorting fighters to a SBR over Germany (hypothetic) where two fighters are stationned. German AA fires and british losses are removed. Units are then moved to the battle board where intercepters (german fighters) become the attacker and british units are defenders. All units attack and defend normally. If the bomber survives combat, it can conduct it’s SBR. I think this will put more realism than just ignoring fighters…

  • I use the Pacific dogfight rules. One pass, attacking fighters attack on one, defending fighters attack on two. After that one round of combat, bombing commences.

  • 2007 AAR League

The way it really went was like this. Radar locates large bomber force and defending fighters get airborne. Dogfight. Defending fighters are called off. Flak hits them. Any bomber that survived teh fight can finally drop its load.
Now… if u wanan get teachnical. The flak fired again when teh bombers made the return trip. Escort fighters should Only be available after the player researches long range aircraft, since the allies could not escort their fighters till the mustang made its appearance. OR use pacific rules, which are fairly the same.

I really like that one AK….

But that is the hole idea!!! I agree when it comes to the math, but dont forget about what it takes to develop a tech! And in realism the jets were absolutly the number one interceptors. The jets could have turned the tide against Germany if they were to be developed earlier. I won’t bother typing out all the history and facts. However you are right about that piston egined fighters were used in the interceptor role long before jets were introduced to the war. I also think that the escort / inteceptor rules from A&AP should be introduced for A&AR. These rules would clearly the game better balanced and more realistic. I would also agrue to replace all AA guns with artillery, for reasons explained under the forum House Rules topic More Powerful Airplanes #2! Do you have any suggestions to rules for dog fights?

  • Because in WWII when bombers attack, the fighters deffending the territories and industrial complex……

So I think when the Attacker use Bomber Raid sent Bombers and Fighters, and defender could be use the defender fighters before the dice roller to the Industrial Complex
