Island hopping is great, but its not critical. Sometimes just having a presense in the region will do just great. This is how I build my fleets…… My flagships are my carriers. They are great for defense and their fighters can support amphibious assaults. I will have no less than 2. I then will support my fleet with destroyers. I try to build 2 for every carrier. If you build destroyers and in order to get more bang for your buck, get combined bombardment. This will increase your amphibious firepower drastically. Basically you’ll be able to do the job of a battleship at half the cost and twice the firepower. Then build the rest of your force out of transports and a couple of submarines. If you use this fleet right, you will have everyship being productive on every aspect, offense, defense, and logistics. Your maximizing your money and strength. Lets take a fleet of 2 AC’s, 6 destoyers, 2 subs, 4 troopships with 2 tanks, 2 artillary, and 4 infantry. You attack the phillipines with an amphibious assault. the 6 destroyers should pretty much wipe out all opposition. But if not, you have 4 fighters and all the ground units to clean up. Battle should be over without losing anything. Your fighters land for fleet defense. Basically you have a fleet that can hit hard on land and sea. Your enemy will think twice before hitting you.

I was wondering how you defend Karelia on R1. Do you move the inf from Archangel there (I do, of course). What about tanks and fighters?
The maximum buildup of troops there discourages a G1 attack in Karelia. But if the German player wishes to do so, he can still overwhelm Karelia and Russia loses all of its attacking strike force (I usually only buy inf with Russia, so if Karelia is lost-with all striking force gone- it seriously takes away the chance of a good Russian pounding on Germany in R2…) -

I believe the goal of that manuever is to invite the German’s to over extend themselves while consolidating Russian forces in one territory. Then, on R2 you can burst forward and retake what was lost, maybe even getting a few German tanks.
However, this can backfire if the German’s only send token forces into these lands and keep their units mostly congregated in a small area. Such as sending 3 infantry into Karelia and 3 into Caucasus to fight the 1 infantry in each. This is almost a guarenteed win which forces the Russians to retake and a very small risk.
Another method is to move 4 infantry from Caucasus and all units from Russia into Karelia and build 8 new infantry in Karelia. However, do note that the Germans CAN beat this entire force on G1. They’ll most likely be down 1 fighter and all units except 2-4 armor units, but they can beat it.

i think that the USSR. should go on the offensive first round. attack a german territory or so. this would take the germans ipc down a little and cause the germans to rethink there strategy. and if you attack the ukrain, it would cause the germans to take one extra turn to get to the heart of the russians.

There isn’t any Archangel. Do you mean another country or should this post go into AAR forum? I’m not being nit-picky, I’m asking because I need to know what version you’re talking about to give an adequate answer.

Would you give up Karelia in R1? That’s more safe, in my opinion.
However, it takes away the possibility to take Norway in R2. You could take Norway (so the UK and US could land there) if you stack up all possible troops in Karelia (5 inf, 3 arm, 2 fighters) but if the Germans attack Karelia you 'll lose all offensive force.I’m sorry if I posted this on the wrong forum…

I’d advise that you give Karelia up in R1. If you build 3 Inf, 3 Arm and are a bit lucky with your rolls (attacking at least WRU, maybe UKR), it’s even possible to drive German forces out of Karelia in R2 (although not likely).
