The aberration of the defenseless transport

Hi everyone,
I know it has been discussed already but i found it difficult to find the information i am looking for.

I would like to know how big of an impact AAA/ AA would have in the game if they could fire at bombers during a strategic bombing raid.
What would be a good ‘‘rate of fire’’? 1 shot per AAA no matter how many bombers are attacking or the usual rule for defending (3 shots per AAA up to a maximum of 1 shot fired per attacking plane)?
Would it make it a bit more risky or would it make bombing raid simply suicidal?

If i decide to go for transports defending on 1 it is better to keep the chosen last rules? I mean someone cheezy could very well get 1-2 empty transports for the ride just to ‘‘soak up’’ wounds correct?

I like the idea of Transports as units that are A0 D0 M2 C7 units that haul ground units from one shore to another. I also like the idea of groups of transports, that’s 2 or more transports, have a single collective defense roll of 1 on a d6. The transports would be taken as casualties last but so long as there’s 2 or more, they continue to take potshots @ 1 at their tormentors.

And here I thought I was being unique for having thought that up myself, before I read this thread. Parallel Evolution, I guess.

As usual knp great minds think alike. I allow 1 capacity for airborne assault and 2 capacity for ncm.

I just skimmed over this topic so I haven’t super analyzed costs. But fwiw, I’m not for limiting special units when I set out my HRs generally I just adjust for cost or abilities.  So let’s say someone wants to attempt a massive airborne assault they’re going to need money.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies. Lots of great ideas. I am implementing the idea of having to take off from AB but do not like the idea of having to land back at one (too restictive). A lot of the ideas discussed IMO are to restrictive. Here’s what my group will use moving forward.
Heavy transport $10, move 6 no attack or defend value (last unit removed - NEW) (must take off from AB-NEW) (limit 3 per major power) (can transport 3 Inf or 3 Special forces)
Special forces (paratroops) $5 Att3 Def1 (limit 5 per major power but can be replaced when destroyed).

Lately I play them as 8 Ipc defenseless units that can transport 2 inf. there range is 5. So typically they have a round trip range of a fighter unless they take off from airbase and then the round trip is that of a bomber.

Transports move very slowly. They are prey to subs and planes. They don’t escape unless the enemy runs out of bullets.

I think you don’t like them as fodder in combat, but its insane to bring them in combat only to lose them deliberately and keep your warships perfectly undamaged.

This is a big change that i have always welcomed and wanted for years before.

for AA50 i have developed this. My feeling is the map has alot more territories, and it would take longer to play because of this. To facilitate a quicker result this was playtested and works.

Strategic Movement:

Each player’s capital territory has a value equal to half its IPC value, which can facilitate additional movement of a players land forces. Every time the Home territory is bombed by SBR the total movement of Strategic Movement is reduced one point for every 2 points of damage to the home factory.
    For example: Germany has 5 SR points because it has a 10 IPC home territory. If it was bombed for 5 points of factory damage, you could now only move 2 land units by strategic redeployment.

Procedure: after placement move one land unit a total of 2 additional spaces for each SR point. Units moved can be newly created units or units involved in combat or any unit whether it moved already or attacked. Units can even move across one sea zone to another controlled territory as long as you control the sea zone with one warship.

Repair of damaged factory also changes this value depending on current damage or investment for repair.
