Usually the only way to stop this strategy is by sending planes via UK to Leningrad so Russia can transform them into Russian units. Also if Germany makes a mistake and leaves no fighters in Berlin you have to make him pay with SBRs. Also if you can do this, use the 12 IPC bonus in the Middle East so Germany has to waste more time trying to control that.

But I have found that you can make the battle a lot more interesting by also building artillery with Russia in large amounts to create a dead zone, if Germany is foolish and sends it’s infantry forward too soon the Artillery bonus plus the converted fighters will make them think twice about pushing too fast, allowing the US more time to mount an invasion on fortress Europe.

But that does not mean this strategy is fool proof, you usually have to hope for a German mistake for you to get the upper hand, but playing this way definitely makes Germany have to play nearly flawless in order to succeed before the US becomes a threat.

I often find that much of the Russian fighting power becomes stacked in Belorussia. Btt by building eight tanks each turn, I can easily use the combined forces to crush the Belorussian army, and after that the door to Moscow is blown wide open.

I like the strategy, but I think if the Allies only buy planes and send them over to russia to help, it might change things up a bit~

It is fun when playing Germany to make these attacks on many territories. Only problem is it means you are giving Soviet player opportunity to use more of his infantry at its maximum strength of “2” – in other words defending – and at the same time, you on the offensive are forced to shed your infantry, which is more limited in quantity and which you need to conserve for the final stages.

As Germany, I like to keep eastern front attacks to a minimum, and to organize so that I have a 2-to-1 unit count in these attacks. I like to mass air so that I can win in one or two rounds of dicing. I am extremely reluctant to commit armor to attacks until the fight for Belorussia & Moscow. A disciplined Soviet player will have similar goals – not wasting infantry on counterattacks, but attacking only where the odds are completely advantageous. And holding back armor until the final stages.

It is interesting to me that Mat’s strategy balances both of these choices. His German player stops attacking – even withdraws – rather than broaden the front (except for the Karelia feint). And his Soviet player can counterattack to take territory safely where the German reduces the defenders – but by doing this, the Soviet risks spreading his lines and weakening the central defense. I think Mat’s plan works for the German player because the Soviet has no business extending his front when it is so hard to reinforce! Even getting territory for FREE is a trap for the Russians!

i just played a game that took 15 turns (i finally got moscow)
i think it was 73 inf 24 rtl 39 arm attacking 86 infantry 16 rtl and 22 ftrs
obviously the allies sent in fighters! Had they sent a few more he certainly could have, instead he build a large ineffective fleet, i would have lost (i took moscow with 19 arm))

if you figure that germany has 2x the production of russia, but i’m considering the strategy where the allies mainly build fighters, and send them all to moscow russia bids armor with the bid so they can get finland and norway asap, then infantry so if leningrad falls, the allies can land in norway instead) The usa can build 3 fighters a turn, the uk 2, this is the same as 10 infantry, or 30 ipc’s. At this rate, you can almost say it’s russia against germany, russia get’s 54 ipc’s a turn, germany get’s 40. remember russia has finland and norway. Of course it is even harder for germany since moscow is 4 turns away. All russia has to do is hold out, eventually with 30-40 fighters, they can kill the german stack… or if they have enough to hold a few turns, the allies can build their fleet, or whatever, the allies are cashing out extremely high.

you can build a few bombers as allies, and leave leningrad and stalingrad open (germany takes, sbr it!) If germany sends into ME, russia just get’s stronger (i personally thing sending there is a waste of troops). Usa and uk have to build subs and stuff the first turn or so to get the convoys though. Not really sure, but it might work. I’ll try it my next game.
