• I keep reading about it here but don’t know what it is…. :?

  • In other versions, transports could not load if there was an enemy sub in the zone. Additionally, submarines could submerge instead of firing (I am thinking of original pac and europe). So, by moving one sub in, a player could immediately submerge, and prevent the opponent from loading during combat move on its next turn, unless an ally killed the sub.

    In those versions, I am pretty sure Destroyers did not cancel submerging.

    In 1940 nowadays, subs being present does not affect loading, and destroyers cancel submerging. I think the only was you could possibly do something that resembles sub stalling is moving a sub into a SZ that the opponent wants to UNLOAD from, but cannot bring any combat sea units to (since I beleve that unescorted transports cannot unload where there are surfaced enemy subs present).

    The submarine had to (survive) a combat before submerging.

    Sub Stalls are more of a relic from classic than any of the other versions.

    Sub stalling was a technique used in classic where a sub would stop naval movement. It is the same thing we use destroyers for now, to block naval movement. The rule changed was started AA50 or maybe revised (been a long time since I played revised, so can’t remember).

    where a sub would stop naval movement

    Incorrect.

    Substalling is specifically in reference to preventing transports from loading.  Naval “blocks” are something else entirely.

  • Official Q&A

    @Gargantua:

    The submarine had to (survive) a combat before submerging.

    In Classic 3rd edition (defending only, no subs can submerge in Classic 1st and 2nd editions) and Revised, yes.  In original Europe and Pacific, attacking subs can submerge immediately, while defending subs must survive attacking fire first.

    @Gargantua:

    Sub Stalls are more of a relic from classic than any of the other versions.

    I think you mean Revised, as subs had no effect on transports’ loading in Classic.  Also, because attacking subs can submerge before any dice are rolled in original Europe and Pacific, substalling is much more effective there, especially in Pacific.
