G40 house rules

  • Edited bombers in seabattles, aa cruisers and advanced (improved) mech infantry

A few house rules i am trying out for Global40 Alpha3.9

Paratroops, basically everynation starts out with paratroopers researched with one change; each paratroop costs one IPC on the turn they will be dropped (the INF to be dopped must already be in the territory with the airbase before combat move), purchased during the first phase of your turn. You do not have to use them, during combat move if you change your mind the IPCs simply go back into your bank.

Improved mech INF, everynation starts out with advanced mech infantry,

Bombers in sea battles, bombers attack seazones at a reduced roll of 2. this does not include the land portion of amphibious assaults.
    @Hobbes:

B-17s were used on the Pacific - like you said, it was discovered that just dropping bombs had a 1% odd of hitting a ship so they switched to a tactic called ‘skip bombing’ (the bomb is thrown like a stone skipping on top of the sea until it hits its target. British Lancasters also used this technique to blow holes on the Ruhr dams on 1943 and they sank the battleship Tirpitz and the pocket battleship Lutzow with Tallboy bombs in 1944.

Dont confuse tactical bombers with strategic bombers

AA cruisers, Cruisers get a preemptive first strike, similar to submarines when no enemy destroyers are present. Cruisers ONLY get this ability when their are enemy air units in the battle and ONLY the air units can be taken as hits. Hit air units are removed immediatly before combat begins.
So order of combat goes as follows
    1-submarine shots
    2-cruiser shots
    3-remove hits from above
    4-everything else
NOTE: Cruisers only get one preemptive per battle and DO NOT fire twice on the first full round of combat. Cruisers still hit on 3 or less

Anzac-Canada, Canada and Anzac track income separately and make purchases separately, however they move and attack as one power (commonwealth) and technology may be shared and purchased together in any combination, -Simply place Anzac units in Canada territories (ones with canadian roundel) instead of UK units. This weakens UK-London a little but makes Anzac a bit more fun
––note: FIRST TURN ONLY, Canadas income may be used by UK-London (this is for sealion balance)

USA-China, USA and China income is tracked separately and purchases are made separately, they move and attack as one power (china can never use research or pay for any USA research). this speeds up gameplay

VC bombing, Strat Bombers can conduct bombing raids on enemy VCs. Interceptor/Escorts follow same rules as normal SBR. Each VC has its own AA guns just as bases and ICs. Roll one dice per bomber, divide each roll by 2 (round down, so roll of 1 = no damage), total damage = IPCs lost by the owner of the VC. IPCs lost cannot exceed value of the territory that is being bombed.

Im trying this out using LL dice to see how balance is

Would anyone be willing to try these rules ?
    What are your suggestions?

  • I like the paratroops idea, but mechs should be able to blitz without tanks.

While the bombers in sea battles is a good idea in general, that would make Sealion essentially impossible as you either have to invest in anti-fleet or SBR…
That’s one time when realism has to take a back seat to gameplay.

The cruisers AA should be like they have an AA gun on their back. Why? Because sometimes air units are a GOOD first casualty choice, and sometimes (pretty much always) air units will be taken in the first round. Just rearrange hits, and there’s no impact.

    ANZAC/Canada is a good idea.

    US/China attacking together…I’d say that’s fine as it’ll be rare that there’s a landing in China…

And I like my VC bombing rules, but that’s just me.

How would the bomber rule make sealion impossible ? Germany only starts with 2 strat bombers (used for SBR if sealion almost always), and the rule states that they still can participate in the land portion of amphibious assault…maybe im missing your point ?

I see your point with the cruisers. Give them one AA roll per cruiser hitting on a 1 before battle starts, hit aircraft are immediatly removed.

about the VC bombing, i think its a bit much to say that a strategic bomber only has a 50% chance of hitting a CITY, i mean the pilots must all 3 years old and cant even see out the window to miss a whole city half the time lol. With my suggestion there still is a chance that the pilot has a brainfart and misses, or say the ordinance malfunctions (1/6). A city should be easier to bomb than a convoy (bunch of small moving targets vs one huge static target)

  • @Uncrustable:

bombers in sea battles, bombers cannot attack any seazone or participate in any seabattle in any way (common sense here, its absurd to think that massive slow moving WWII erra strat bombers could hit a moving target from altitude, or even more absurd to think of low flying strat bombers moving through fighter screens and flak clouds to target ships with torpedoes, a strat bomber would never be unlikely to pull out of a decent dive bomb maneuver in time either) this does not include the land portion of amphibious assaults.

advanced mech INF, similer to above everynation starts out with advanced mech infantry, except mech still cannot blitz without pairing with a tank

You mean like the tech?  Where you can pair inf/mechs?

  • Thankyou Hobbes, i have edited the bombers in sea battles rules and also advanced (improved) mech infantry and aa cruisers (thanks to techroll)

i said advanced mech inf i had meant improved mech inf

it is exactly the tech (improved mech infantry)
though im not sure what you mean by pairing INF/mechs
