• Hey guys,

my buddies and I picked up axis and allies spring 1942 this past fall and have really enjoyed playing it! for all of us its our first time playing any axis and allies game.

we did come across one issue we couldnt find a answer to.

American player had a destoyer, a cruiser and 2 transports in sea zone 12. German player had a sub in sea zone 13.

The American player moved his destoyer into sea zone 13 to attack the sub, thus making sea zone 13 a hostile zone, and at the same time, in the same turn, moved his cruiser and two transports to zone 14.

The German player argued that it was an illeage move because by making sea zone 13 hostile by attacking the sub the american cruiser and two transports would be stuck in zone 13 not being able to pass a hostile zone. His thinking was everything happens at the same time in the turn. so the cruiser and transports would still be in zone 13 when it became hostile.

The American player said it was a legal move because his transports and cruiser would have passed zone 13 before his destroyer moved into it to make it a hostile zone.

so anyone know who is right? Thanks!

  • Official Q&A

    Welcome, smmikeman!

The American player is right.  Actually, he’s only partially right.  Attacking a sub (or transport) in a sea zone doesn’t make it hostile.  Hostile sea zones are defined by the presence of enemy surface warships, not by combat.  The bottom line is that the move is legal.

  • Thanks for the fast reply Krieghund!

yeah we are really enjoying it and considering getting Europe 1940 soon. :)

  • Maybe this is a better spot for this question: UK has placed a carrier and a destroyer in SZ 7 (English Channel), which already contained 2 German subs.  A US bomber can attack the sub (because of the presence of an allied destroyer. Right? Are the subs unable to defend?  Can they return fire against the UK fleet? Can the fleet fight; or just die?

  • Official Q&A

If the US attacks, the UK units will not participate in the battle in any way.  As a result, the US bomber will be unable to hit the subs, as there will be no attacking destroyer.

  • Hmm… So by “friendly” destroyer/s the rule book is referring to only those of the actual attacking  power?  Therefor, the USSR sub can NEVER attack a German sub unless the Russia actually buys its own destroyer… Fine by me.

In the case of the attacker, yes.  A friendly destroyer must be “in the battle” in order to affect subs.  Since allied units don’t attack together, the only friendly destroyers in the battle will belong to the attacking power.

The defender, however, will benefit from destroyers belonging to an ally, since all units in the sea zone defend together in a battle.
