• Which of these choices would have bettered Germany’s chances in the Battle of Britain?

  • I think that instead of bombing London and other civilian targets the Germans should have focused on military targets. From what I have read the Germans nearly beat the RAF early on until they started targeting civilian targets.

  • The only point, initially, to the air battles from the German perspective was to gain air supremacy.  Without complete and utter control of the skies, Operation Sealion was doomed to failure and the concept of victory by bombers could not be realistically attempted either.

Of course, after Sept., the weather precluded any realistic invasion anyway so the air war continued as it was one of the few ways to take the war to the British (the others being in N. Africa, and most significantly with the U-boats).

Even had air supremacy been acheived by the Germans, victory in Operation Sealion would not have been maintained forever; especially as most of Great Britian was out of range of the German fighters and the allies could safety operate there without fear of German attacks.  With lend-lease from the USA, the chance for air supremacy was essentially over by the time (perhaps May 1940) Operation Sealion could again be considered.

I once read that one reason for the German invasion of the Soviet Union was because the Germans had no other strategic options for victory.  While I disagree with this, it is true that in Spring 1940, there was little else for the Germans to do.  N. Africa was never going to be decisive; summer is not the best time to ramp up u-boat attacks due to the long summer days making submarines easier to spot by airplanes and destroyers, and clearly aerial bombing was insufficient.  And with the ever-increasing supply of material from the USA, the UK would only be getting stronger.

I suppose you’re off by a year. The Germans had quite a lot to do in Spring 1940: they were busy conquering Western Europe. The situation you’re describing would more likely refer to Spring 1941.
Also, lend-lease only became effective late in 1941 and was not a decisive factor in preventing Operation Sealion. As early as 1940, the UK simply outproduced Germany all by itself (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_aircraft_production).

  • you are right, I was thinking of 1941.

In 1940 the Germs did not have any four engine heavy bombers that could carry a decent payload. (same problem in the attack on the Ruskies) They also did not have an escort fighter that could spend over 20 minutes over southern England. (me109) They also did not have the discipline to keep attacking military targets. They found out that the JU87 could not live in the same sky with spitfires and hurricanes. And why did they not try to take out the radar towers on the coast? English navy? Sorry but the Germs just did not have the right tools or the strategy for this job!

The Luftwaffa was built for army support not strategic bombing. The only medium bomber the Germans had that wasn’t a converted 1930’s civil design was the Ju-88 and it’s numbers during the battle were small. The Me-110 was a failure as an escort and needed it’s own escort.

I believe the best way to seek a British exit from the war was the mining of the Thames and all other port. Let the Luftwaffa control the North Sea and Channel.

  • None of the options would make any difference, and as I have mentioned in earlier (similar) threads, Germany should have gone into full war modus from 1939 at latest. That would/could make a huge difference, it could even bring Germany a victory against Russia, but the Germans still would need a portion of luck in that war.

if germany blew up the radar sites uk would not have been able to scramble their fighters to the exact spot needed to stop the german squadrons, thus germany would have been able to better bomb the airfields and airplane factories.

the only reason they started bombing cities willy-nilly, was one of their bombers accidently bombed a city, and uk responded by bombing a german city and that escalated the city bombing war on both sides.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        if germany stuck with its plan, even with uk radar functioning, they would have destroyed the airfileds and would have thus dominated the sky.
