Definitely worth the money (assuming it’s like new), but your decision to pick the 1st edition does not make a whole lot of sense to me. If you wanted a game that could take less than the 1940 games and still have the Axis&Allies experience, I would think the 2nd edition of 1942 is the most obvious choice (unless you are still playing the first edition of the 1940 games).

This said, one thing that Spring 1942 has going for itself is balance: the game is fairly balanced (being only very slightly unbalanced in favour of the Axis) and can be reasonably played with no bid (and no optional rules picking) at any skill levels, which is rare or even unique for any Axis&Allies world games.

My suggestion, however, is to alter the starting set-up by relocating the American destroyer into the sea zone next to the Eastern United States territory: it near-to-perfectly balances the game (by giving a very small advantage to the Allies) and avoid the very dicey attack by the German sub in than zone on round 1 (being either a +26 or a -6 swing value for the Axis).

Yeah, it can, but you’ll need to mark your AA guns somehow as they are now Power Dependent and you’ll have several more lying around on the map.

Though I’d suggest you go to the trade thread and ask for just the 2nd Map and extra AA guns, you should be able to get them for $10ish +shipping. That’s what I did.

you don’t REALLY need to mark AA ownership.  It’s rare indeed for Japan to combine AA with Germany, or US to bring AA to UK, etc etc etc.  Since they never can attack, they’ll never share a space with an opposing force. So I don’t see this as being that big of a problem.

The only thing wrong with this but is easily fixed is the US starting income. I have some in my group that forget a couple of the steps and the charts in the first link above has been helpful in remembering the steps to play.  Enjoy AA42. This is the only game, besides Revised, that I have in the AA lineup and really enjoy it.

It is very true that Russia only has to worry about a few territories and doesn’t have a lot of buying opportunities. However, Russia is a tactical nightmare for anyone who wants tan easy game… Don’t expect to gain a lot of ground much less win as Russia unless you have REALLY good Allies. They also have a terrible income… But as Keredrex said, you only have to buy land units pretty much.

For simplicity’s sake, yes Russia is easiest. But from a tactical/“winning”/strategy standpoint, it’s pretty hard.

Tell me about it…. I’ll never understand why they put the IPC counter ON the board… Should’ve been seperate like the oringinal, made more room to make the countries a little bit bigger.

Thats why I’ve recently bought AAP40, next week AAE40! Then you’ve got to worry about the board being too massive and not how small it is haha.

I think the reason they put the ipc tracker on the board is to have less things in the box to intimidate a new player which is what the game is geared towards. Overall it is still a great game and my favorite WWII themed game.

Hahahaha, from that point of view yes I understand. I think the only way to truely understand the game fully is to learn from someone first hand in person.

That is how I learned. My uncle and brother used to play the 2nd edition in the 80s but I was too young and it didn’t appeal to me. A few years ago I wanted to try the game so I bought a used copy from ebay and had my uncle come over. I have been hooked ever since.

agreed… also This game is supposed to be a simulation of what you can do with what was available.  also the value and production limits are there to simulate the Time and resources involved in the war effort.  To make a drastic change of unlimited deployment are game breaking changes that will affect further game play.   besides, Ive played many games on the board… and every country has had there share of victory… one game Russia dominated germany, another game japan dominated the US, another Game UK Wiped out Japan, and once the US hammered both Axis into the ground.  Fantastic games…
